17.01.2022 It would seem that the people in charge have given us permission to do so. However, their other message for you is to stay at home so these are conflicting times to navigate through. Emotionally and financially. Why they allow us the hairdressing industry to remain open is mystifying to say the least. Do they think we have super powers because we dress well and know all the cool places to go to? Do they think that all the chemicals we inhale both at work and in nightclubs... and bars will give us some sort of immunity against any and all virus? . Self-mockery aside, perhaps it has something more to do with the publics mental health. So many of my friends are hurting right now. Perhaps hairdressing is filed under self-care. And we need that more than ever. . Hairdressers have been washing their hands since 1910 as far as I know and take great precautions in terms of hygiene. Mostly out of social politeness and to protect ourselves from the general public. Not to mention all the residual hair and hair products left on our hands. As you can imagine we as an industry have stepped up our efforts 300% during these hard times with the cleaning, removal of all touch points around the salon. Magazines gone. Crammed over-booked appointments gone. Contactless payments in. And I honestly believe that it will remain like that from now on which is a good thing. . Over the years, and especially right now with COVID-19 Ive come to realize that touching people the way hairstylists do is a very intimate act. Particularly touching peoples heads. If you think about it, not many people get to be as intimate as our job requires. Your partner and your family are the only people that touch your head, even your closest friends perhaps. So there is an... exchange of energy or something that happens when you touch people. I think thats why a lot of people lose their inhibitions and talk to their hairstylists. Its like pillow talk of sorts and confessional at times. Hence a special bond happens between client and hairstylist. You can tell us anything, nothing is off the table. Always unbiased and impartial. And believe me when I say it goes both ways. I think I have divulged as many personal details as the things Ive heard in the chair. .
