20.01.2022 Our Year 9 STEM class is preparing for our upcoming Science Fair and working on stage one of their 3D printing project which is to design and create suitable assistive devices for people with a physical disability. On the printer we have Eleanor Schicks vegetable peeler for people who have undergone an amputation. Earlier in the term, students did a concept mapping activity to identify a range of physical disabilities and daily challenges that people face. This design thin...king process then prompted them to design specific assistive devices to meet those identified challenges. Students are using Tinkercad which is a online design program to create their online design to then print in the 3D printer. They are also creating displays for the upcoming Science Fair to showcase their assistive devices.

19.01.2022 Held on a cold and rainy night on August 14, Saint Marys Catholic College students from Years 6 to 12 swapped their comfortable beds for a night in a car, on the veranda or in the garage with just a simple sleeping arrangement. The students received a small pack of goodies to last until the next morning. The evening provided a unique opportunity for everyone to experience what some Queenslanders and some Australian do on any given night. We were very fortunate to have Brian ...OReilly, Paul Veivers and Peter Janz who participated in this sleepout and shared their knowledge about St Vinnies roles in supporting people who experience homelessness. The event was a success and gave a deeper understanding and insights of homelessness. Here is some feedback from those who took part: I think the sleepout really made me reflect on, like Elizabeth said, how we take things for granted. For us, it rained a lot while we were sleeping and in the morning we were all soaking. I imagine those homeless would experience that a lot. Laiccee-Lee Dales We felt like weather was definitely a really big factor. We were in a tent but someone who may just be sleeping on the ground would have got soaked. Even temperature wise as well. Eleanor Schick Often we take the simple things for granted, like an extra piece of toast after dinner or lots of warm blankets! But the sleep out allowed us to hope in their shoes and really experience everything that we never really thought about. Elizabeth Watson The sleep-out made us reflect on, we slept in the car, so we didnt get wet but if you were to be homeless and carry all your stuff around in the car it would be more difficult and rough to sleep then it was for us. Because we were in a car the weather didnt effect us that much, like it was cold but we didnt get wet though like most of everyone that did it. over all it was a great experience and we will certainly do it again. 14.01.2022 Meet Percy. Percy is one of our Year 9 students and here is a little bit about him and his design in STEM. 1) How long have you been at Saint Marys Catholic College? 3 years 2) What is your desired career choice? Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer... 3) If you could share a meal with four individuals, living or deceased, who would they be? Morgan Freeman, Morgan Rice, Robert M. Lightfoot Jr (Executive Head of NASA), Nolan North (Actor from my favourite game). 4) Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? Unless you count Tom Curtain as famous, then no. 5) Who is your favourite author? Morgan Rice. In STEM, as a class we identified various physical disabilities and challenges associated with each disability. This initial process helped us in imagining and creating assistive devices to address the identified challenges. I researched about DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder) and identified a challenge that people with DCD face i.e. risk of injury during cutting vegetables. Therefore, I designed a hand protector/vegetable holder which people with DCD can use to safely prepare food.
