25.01.2022 UZUMAKI - SONG BREAKDOWN "UZUMAKI was so much fun to write. The idea came to fruition in July of 2019, after trawling through the history of Horror Manga one night. The imagery from Junji Ito's many series truly stuck with me. It was really of difficult to tear myself away. What caught my imagination wasn't the story or the characters, but the illustrations. They were captivating in a sick way, but Uzumaki was the one that I was most obsessed with. It captured infinite space ...within an idea of an ever consuming spiral. I knew that was the stimulus I needed to write. I got really into the music theory side of how I should compose it. So I decided to step away from the regular format. I threw out the melody, emphasised the bass, screamed into the guitars, and shredded the hi-hats. The bass is the real hero of the song. Without it, there would be no substance. Surface Tension is a song that acts as a piece of vent art, even the title alludes to the explosive nature of the track, slowly and gradually building in layers until it eventually breaks through. Yes, it’s slow, but if there’s any song that should be listened to in the late hours with a sense of loneliness in the air and the volume cranked, it’s this one. It’s a song about many things, but the climate c...risis was the first thing that drove it’s creation. Slow disease & Cigarettes I pour down my throat illustrate the cancerous and choking nature of humanity’s actions - the thoughtlessness. There is no concern for the repercussions forced onto future generations, and the inaction that our leaders have taken to prevent an apocalyptic scenario. It’s become more than that now. I thought about what future waits for us 40 or 50 years down the line, or rather IF a future waits for us. Will we be able to truly meet the people we are yet to love? Is there a way to reverse our actions before it’s too late? I don’t want to keep doing the same thing, in denial of what’s right in front of us.
