25.01.2022 Need lunchbox inspo? With children and young people returning to school around Australia, we’re sharing tips for packing more calcium-rich dairy foods into lunchboxes.

23.01.2022 Broadly-speaking, we’re a broad-minded bunch at the Foundation but we must admit that broad beans are one of our fava-rite legumes! They’re the taste of Spring and our online community platform, the Shared Table, is positively bursting with them. Here are some highlights: Moonah Primary School lunchtime garden visitors enjoyed snacking on some early broad beans before harvesting began. Wonder how many made it to the kitchen?! The tiny gardeners at Gladys Smith Early Lea...rning Centre had fun podding and chatting. Mount Rogers Primary School students harvested a big bucket of broadies. Jordan River Learning Federation garden has a beautiful, lush broad bean crop. Happy harvesters from Littlehampton Primary School picked over 7kg of broad beans from their patch and made a delicious broad bean salad garnished with edible blooms. Looking for broad bean recipe inspo? Members will find resources for Cannelloni with Ricotta and Broad Bean filling, and Broad Bean dip, on the Shared Table. See more

21.01.2022 We love these kitchen garden-inspired mosaic tiles! Created by students at Cobargo Public School, these mini art pieces will be used as steppingstones or wall art. So much variety! Great job team. Mosaicking is a fun activity that ticks lots of boxes: Great for keeping social distancing guidelines in mind sections of a mosaic mural can be created by small groups or individual students. Promotes self-expression, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Good st...arting point for exploring other cultures e.g. Middle Eastern mosques, Mediterranean tiles and Catalan artist Antoni Gaudí. Wonderful opportunity to link art to your kitchen garden program. We’ve admired lots of lovely mosaic work in schools around Australia, including a magnificent pizza oven! Members will find our resource for building a beautiful mosaic birdbath on the Shared Table. 14.01.2022 The National Pandemic Gardening Survey Report has been released! This year over 9,000 Australian gardeners shared what edible gardening meant to them during COVID-19. At a time of great global uncertainty, growing food was a source of solace, peace, and healing; it meant safe, healthy and fresh food for family and friends; and it brought people together at a time of enforced social distancing. As Australia plans its way forward, this publication underscores that food growing... must be central to our recovery, says Sustain: The Australian Food Network. The report lays out an action agenda to create more edible towns and cities in Australia. As part of a collective of organisations (see below) with a shared understanding that growing food can be a force for good in society, we fully support these findings. If that's not enough excitement, they're stunning too vibrant green pods with crimson beans inside, surrounded by gorgeous pops of bright red from their flowers. #natureisamazing

09.01.2022 #SAKGFguesstheplant What am I? It's NAIDOC week and a great way to celebrate the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is through learning about, and cooking with, Indigenous foods. This succulent has been foraged by Indigenous Australians for tens of thousands of years. Who can tell us what it is? Clue: The young, green shoots are quite crisp, similar to asparagus, with a salty flavour. You can enjoy the shoots raw; added to pesto or salad; or lightly blanched then pan-fried with olive oil, garlic and a dash of lemon juice. Our very own Support & Delivery Officer Suzie took this wonderful photo in the garden at East Fremantle Primary School Kitchen Garden last year.

06.01.2022 Why did the chickens cross the road at By My Side Primary School? You’ll find the answer in Brendan Bolton’s new storybook. Garden Specialist and storyteller Brendan has run kitchen garden programs in Victorian primary schools for many years. In his debut children’s book, the Great Chicken Escape, he shares the true story of some cheeky chooks and their high-henergy getaway. Brendan explains: The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation has been a very big part o...f my working life and I have had a number of experiences during this time that I wanted to write down before I forgot them in my old age. The Great Chicken Escape is a true account of a garden class I was involved in. My kitchen garden journey began at Surfside Primary School and continued at Thomas Chirnside Primary School so the setting of the book simply had to have ‘side’ in its name By My Side Primary School seemed appropriate! The school’s garden is like many in the Kitchen Garden Program so children will easily relate to both the setting and the storyline. This beautiful book, illustrated by Minerva Lamorgese White Mivart Creations makes the perfect festive gift for kitchen garden children. All proceeds from books sold through our shop support the Foundation. Shop www.kitchengardenfoundation.org.au/shop See more
