21.01.2022 Today we are featuring the City of Onkaparinga Contemporary Curators Award and winner Suzanne Close. Jaynie Langford, Coordinator Sauerbier House, City of Onkaparinga, says of the award, In acknowledging the importance of curatorship within the portfolio of arts roles, the City of Onkaparinga is proud to partner with SALA to offer the City of Onkaparinga Contemporary Curator Award for the second year. From a particularly tight field, winning curator Suzanne Close (The Unce...rtainty of Knowing.; Floating Goose Studios Inc) was selected for delivering a playful, cohesive exhibition exploring the connection between pre-existing knowledge and everyday associations. Suzanne Close says of her exhibition (pictured), The Uncertainty of Knowing featured the work of emerging artists, Izabella Shaw and Inneke Taalman. The exhibition rationale was to examine the ambiguous in-between space between knowing and unknowing that can prompt alternative meanings and new possibilities for both artists and audience. 19.01.2022 Today we are featuring the City Rural Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd Emerging Artist Award and winner Amber Cronin. Andrew Benda, Managing Director, City Rural says of the work, Ambers works showed complexity and related strongly with the narrative she was given for the exhibition. The execution of techniques in using multiple materials to create her works of art was outstanding. She has a definite 5 year plan for her Art Practice and it was clear to see how the award will help... her on her journey. Amber considers sculptural art practice as deep, ecological listening and uses it as the basis for better understanding her place in the world. Conceived as a set of tools to better navigate this epoch of great upheaval, Caudex is a series of contemplative and playful forms that hint at a lost purpose. Ark gently acknowledges overlooked, discarded things that sit between human and plant realms. As sculptural metaphors these vessels were conceived to carry these markers of relationship, remembering what is sacred in this interrelationship. 16.01.2022 She Is Pop-up Gallery in Nuriootpa is one of the winners of the 2020 Hither & Yon Venue Awards for the way that it drew in both artists and also members of the community who did not identify as artists. This venue championed the diverse stories of its 100 Barossa Artists and became advocates for arts in the region. It engaged local businesses for greater impact, provided professional development opportunities for artists and created a lasting record of the exhibition in the f...orm of a book. The impact of this venture will be ongoing for Barossa artists and the whole community. "Our alignment with SALA and being sponsor for this award was highlighted in the 100 Barossa Artists exhibition. Encouraging community involvement, art for all, emerging talent prospects, future pathways was evident. We are also happy that this was a regional winner, involving space and town activation, and showing innovation for a potential future use of the venue, sensitive to the environment." - Malcolm Leask, Director, Hither & Yon

The City of Adelaide is pleased to partner with SALA in support of this new incubator award which will enable the recipient to develop and grow their art practice while providing them with an opportunity to share their work with the community, said the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Sandy Verschoor. Supporting awards such as this that enable artists to flourish reinforces Adelaides reputation... as a creative, diverse, liveable city. I congratulate Alycia Bennett on receiving the award and I wish her every success with her work. Alycia Bennett says of her work (pictured), Negative Space is a pop-up activity center with a focus to promote the culture of sharing by creating space for collaboration and exchange. The activity centre facilitates a central point of contact in the city for resources and open dialogues, acting as a public message board. Negative Space at ARTHUR-Art Bar / Innovation district included weekly collaborative workshops consisting of skill sharing, collective action projects, art making, free markets and food sharing. The weekly workshops bring together unsuspecting communities, giving space for the sharing of ideas, conversations, and future collaborations. 13.01.2022 Today we are featuring the Don Dunstan Foundation Award and winner Makeda Duong. Gemma Burdon, Deputy Director, Don Dunstan Foundation says of the award Now, more than ever, we need to deliver empathy and compassion through many mediums, for those who live in different circumstances to us and the Foundation continues to drive outcomes for a more equitable society. In 2020, we were so pleased to see over 30 entrants whose art touched on many themes including homelessness, me...ntal health, culture and migration. This years winner of our award is Makeda Duong with Mixed Race Sweater. Makeda Duong says of her work (pictured), With this work I hope to touch on the complexity of being a biracial Australian by exploring issues of belonging, otherness, and the feelings of being caught in-between cultures that second and third generation immigrants can experience. I aim to examine my own racial identity more closely, as well as explore how my identity and sense of belonging may be reflective of larger cultural anxieties within Australia. 02.01.2022 Today we are featuring the City of Unley Active Ageing Award and winner John Freeman. Of the Award the City of Unley says, John stood out in a strong field of submissions with the quality of his artwork, his imagery, and his ability to resonate emotional connections for audiences to an environment through detailed irregular pathways and personal experiences. The City of Unley is proud of its long association with the SALA Festival and in recent years to have found its niche... in the SALA Awards to celebrate the critical and experienced role our older artists play in the South Australian visual arts landscape. John Freeman says of his work (pictured), Examining the image as a metaphor for the inner journey of self-inquiry. The artistic elements...lines, shapes and colours...create patterns, overlap and merge into one another. Sensations, thoughts, experiences, events and seasons - reflective of the human experience - finally converge into a tapestry of joyful colour. 01.01.2022 Collective Haunt Inc. is one of the winners of the 2020 Hither & Yon Venue Awards, for the way that it supported SA artists and adapted despite COVID restrictions. Among other things this volunteer-run studio and gallery space extended their hours, held five exhibition openings to accommodate socially-distanced visiting, built new walls for their artists to display more work, and made the most of exhibition opportunities for artists in a difficult climate. The panel acknowl...edge their tireless efforts to support SA artists. "Collective Haunt showed for us the true spirit of SALA, a real passion for their artists shone through, going way over and above their normal program. This exhibition also brought in another very important element for us, which is making SALA very welcome for visitors and having artists active all of the time, showing diversity and personality, and giving back at all levels, through media and artist support." - Malcolm Leask, Director, Hither & Yon Pictured: Sonali Patel, Leah Jeffries, Sonya Unwin
