25.01.2022 Who’s coming to the Salamanca show tomorrow? How lovely is this photo of Alison, from Wharncliffe Alpaca Stud, and her wonderful alpacas? They look so woolly and adorable. ... We can’t wait to meet all of our animal friends on display from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm this Saturday. They will be set up on the Salamanca Lawns and you will need to come through the main market entry point and then make your way back onto the lawns to visit them. More info can be found on salamancamarket.com.au/show

25.01.2022 There is nothing quite as wonderful as a hand-knitted jumper that your mother or grandmother made for you. They last for many years and are always warmer, especially as we know that they were made for us. There is a lot our grandparents can teach us about the worth of an object that is made by hand. Emma Hope is a master of second-hand and finding unique retro and vintage items. Her stall Emma Hope retro and vintage, is full of bright, bold colours and patterns. ‘During the c...older months, my hand knitted range, or "knits by nanna" as I call them, are particularly popular. I love that someone has spent hundreds of hours lovingly knitting these jumpers. Rather than ending up in landfill, I love it that I can give them new homes where they can be worn, admired and keep their new owners toasty and warm. I select jumpers with high wool content, as well as cashmere, mohair, merino and angora’, says Emma. You can say that second-hand clothing runs in the family. ‘I grew up at the market as my late mum, Sue Hope, was an original stallholder. She also opened Tasmania’s first vintage clothing store. I was a market child and took over the stall from my mother. ‘It’s so wonderful to be back at Salamanca Market. My fellow stallholders are my market family and I've missed them terribly, as I have my regular customers. It finally felt like a real Saturday for the first time in five months. I grew up at the market and it's such a huge part of my life. It's hard to describe how much it means to me, but being back was like going home.’ You can find some of Emma's items on our online store at https://salamancamarketstore.com.au//emma-hope-retro-and-/ or, visit her online store at https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/emmahopevintage

24.01.2022 This weekend we are introducing contact tracing at the market. This means that we will be collecting the contact details of everyone attending the market each week. It’s part of the new COVID-safe measures required by the Tasmanian State Government. There is an easy to use phone app, or if you are not tech savvy, you can fill out a paper form at the market. Either way our safety angel volunteers will be on hand to help with any questions. The ‘Check in Tas’ app is easy to do...wnload and set-up before you come to the market. Then on market day you can open the app, scan the QR code on our posters and show our safety angel volunteers the successful check-in screen. For more information and step by step instructions visit our website https://www.salamancamarket.com.au/Tasmania/Contact-Tracing

24.01.2022 Fresh lobster this Saturday It’s been a very late start to the season for Shaun and his crew from the ‘Merlin’. They normally fish the far southern and western waters of Tasmania for rock lobster and each trip can mean the crew spend anywhere from 7 to 12 days straight at sea. This weekend they will be bringing around 250 fresh crays to the market to sell. The crays will be unloaded straight off the boat into boxes with ice. You can find them this Saturday near the Able Tasman fountain in our new fresh veggie area.

23.01.2022 Jenn’s colourful work is full of gumnuts, birds, native animals and wonderful sea creatures, such as whales and sea dragons. Each piece starts as a drawing and then is handmade using the clay. She mixes the clay colours herself and does a lot of hand blending to get the right effect, before cutting out each component and building the finished piece. It takes time to get the patterns in the clay right and the final effects can be everything from a bold colour, a watercolour lo...ok, or a metallic finish. Our personal favourite is the ‘weedy sea dragon’ necklace, which Jenn made after seeing a real one at her local beach near Mt Nelson. This is finished with metal leaf and alcohol inks - the metallic finish is beautiful, especially when the sunlight hits it. You can find Manning Polymer Clay at the market this Saturday on the building isle of the market, near Maldini.

23.01.2022 We love our safety angel volunteers Without them we couldn’t run our market each week and keep everyone safe. Our angels count everyone into the market, remind people about social distancing and hand sanitiser, and offer a warm welcome and a friendly smile. Scott and Renae from Joanna's Jams have a stall which is located right near Irish Murphy's. Each week they see firsthand the wonderful job our angels do and how cheerful they are in all sorts of weather They have been so impressed with our angels that they gave them some of their lovely jams as a special thank you. Our angels will now be that much sweeter with their mixed berry, blackberry, strawberry and raspberry jams . If you are at the market this Saturday, share the love and say thank you as well. #salamancamarket #sweetjamstory

23.01.2022 Great weather today at the market. Come on down!

22.01.2022 John Martin is surrounded by bush and wildlife, at his pottery studio in Mt Nelson. The colors in his work reflect the wilderness colours of Tasmania, including the local moss and lichen, wildflowers, night skies and of the rivers and beaches. He hand throws on a potter’s wheel but it is the wood-firing process that captivates him and where the magic happens ‘I start before dawn on the firing day. It is hard physical work and the continuous anticipation of what effect acti...ons will have ten minutes ahead,’ says John. ‘It becomes a type of meditation. I fire alone and become totally involved in the process. There is much to attend to at every stage of the firing. Sudden rises or plummets in temperature can occur if attention wavers. Patience, calmness, energy and clear thinking are essential. At the end, there is about a two hour period where the clay and glazes will mature and the ashing and flame effects are maximized. This is a serene and special time, just the soft rumble of the kiln and the stars above.’ We asked John what timber he likes the most ‘The local silver wattle is probably the one I like to work with the most. It burns to a fine ash and floats through the kiln and interacts with the clay. The wattle burns hot but very quickly. When the ash lands on the clay at the hot temperature it melts the ash. It’s a natural glaze. When you open the kiln you can see the pattern of the flames across all of the pots. Each piece has individual flame marks and there are infinite variations.’ We asked him what it was about wood-firing process that kept him motivated. ‘It’s the hardest way to consistently make high quality pottery, but the most rewarding. So many things can go wrong, but when it goes right it’s so satisfying,’ he said. You can find his pottery outside Maldini’s each Saturday at the market. It's beautiful work that is worth appreciating for the journey each piece has been through.

13.01.2022 Jake lives and works in Hobart and the Tasmanian environment around him provides endless opportunities for inspiration. His bronze work is detailed and captivating and you can feel the connection with nature that he has strived to achieve within each of piece. He grew up in Poland in a family where hunting and fishing was the ‘normal’ thing. With two uncles in the family business of taxidermy, there was a huge opportunity to learn about anatomy when he was younger. This atte...ntion to detail and structure has carried through to the work he does now and shows in the way he can achieve expression and character. He casts his own pieces at his studio at home, starting from the clay or wax original, making the moulds, to casting in bronze or silver. But, he says, when the commissions get too big, he likes to do this at a friend’s foundry. Is it dangerous? We have to ask. ‘It can be, but safety first. There are always a few close calls in the foundry when the mould breaks,’ he says. There is also clearly a lot of chemistry. The patina on the finished work is something that he has mastered through experience, learning about oxides, nitrates and mixing chemicals to get the right effect. ‘It takes hours and days to get the patina right. I’m working on a Kingfisher now, but I am not happy. I’m going to strip it off and start again,’ he says. He has recently completed a commission for the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, which is very exciting and it's embedded into the concrete footpath in the Tasmanian section. ‘The Fagus tree is a part of the garden’s emblem and the leaves are in their logo, but they didn’t have the tree in their collection. It grows at a high altitude in the remote Tasmanian wilderness, so they have never had it in the gardens before.’ ‘It’s always nice when you get a commission and people bring their own ideas. It’s my hands and my process, but the concept is a collaboration and they have put their own thoughts into it.’ You can find Jake Mikoda Bronze Sculpture Artist in the middle isle this Saturday, near Parliament House Lawns.

09.01.2022 It may be the combination of the detail in the old coins or the way the different metals shine in the sunlight, but the craftsmanship in this jewellery is clear. Phil, from Accent Rings, loves to take old coins and transform them into beautiful, unique pieces of jewellery. ‘I find some of my coins from the Coin and Stamp Shop in Hobart or I find them on eBay. Sometimes people have their own coins that they bring in that may have been sitting in a draw and they want them tur...ned into something’, says Phil. You will find coins from all around the world in this stall, many of them are old and many of them you don’t see very often anymore. ‘The 1935 New Guinea shilling is one of my favourites. It has a hole in it so when I make it into a ring, the pattern is awesome’, says Phil. ‘There are a number of other coins I like as well. The 1 Kina New Guinea coin has two crocodiles around the outside and I made one recently for a lady in her 70s and she loved it.’ Each earring, pendant and ring is individually hand-crafted and meticulously finished to make sure it is of the highest quality in his Hobart studio. ‘My studio is full of lots of tools. I have metal lathes, drill presses and plenty of jewellery tools. You need a lot of tools to do the work properly. Every 6 months or so, I clean out my studio so I can see what colour the benches are’, he says jokingly. Fun fact you won’t find any modern Australian coins made into jewellery as there is a penalty for defacing or altering current Australian currency. However, Phil is currently working on a bezel to go around the outside of coins. That way they can be mounted, but not damaged. ‘I am always looking for new things to make and creative ways to make new things. I am always looking for something new - you create one thing and something else creative happens along the way.’ #salamancamarket #accentrings

09.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day, which raises awareness of plants and animals at the risk of extinction and celebrates the amazing work that passionate conservationists, researchers and volunteers do to save them. 7 September is a significant date, as it marks the day when the last Tasmanian Tiger died in Hobart Zoo in 1936. It is believed to have died from the cold after being locked out of its sleeping quarters. Sadly, in the last 200 years over 100 plant and anim...al species have become extinct in Australia. Sharon from Thyla Scene will be supporting National Threatened Species Day and 15% of sales made via her online store this week will be donated to the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal. Custom-made orders included. Her dog coats are a fitting way to remember the Tasmanian Tiger, as well as keeping your dog warm and comfortable. She uses remnant and recycled fabrics, thus reducing textile wastage to landfill. Located in southern Tasmania, Sharon and her family love their country life, the wildlife and community environment. Every year the University of Tasmania use their property to set Tassie Devil traps to assist in Devil Facial Tumour Disease research. You can find more of her range at https://salamancamarketstore.com.au/product-tag/thyla-scene/ and then follow the links to her website.

09.01.2022 Kasha from Hobart Belts has been handmaking leather belts for over 15 years in her belt-making studio behind her house in South Hobart. She mainly uses cowhide leathers and her belts are very beautifully crafted in a range of both natural and bright colours. She also has another leather variety that sparks a lot of interest as it’s so unusual. People are fascinated by her Barramundi leather belts. ‘I often get asked how this is possible. But Barramundi is incredibly tough on...ce it’s tanned’, says Kasha. She grew up in the leather industry as her parents owned a leather workshop in Poland in the 70s. Kasha learnt the craft from her father and, after they moved to Tasmania, took over the family business when he became unwell. She still uses her father’s original sewing machine. ‘It’s a very old PFAFF, which is an old German sewing machine’, says Kasha with pride. You can find Kasha and her range of belts at the market this weekend.

09.01.2022 Dr Kaja Skraskova is a master of herbal medicine, botany and healing and her collection is remarkably Tasmanian. Herbae Thylacini is the name of her Tasmanian bush apothecary and you will find many creams and treatments made from native plants from around our island. When you talk to her, you will find that she is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about her research and like any journey there is always more to discover ‘As a whole, I love how the local flora reflects ...the variety of the Tasmanian landscape. There are salt resistant plants growing along the coastline, plants that adapted to growth in strong winds on top of kunanyi, the cushion plants, the famous Huon Pine... To a certain extent this can be said about plants anywhere in the world, but Tasmania is so unique in how much variety you can find in a relatively small area. There over 500 endemic plants on our island, ranging from trees down to tiny plants’, says Kaja. We asked Kaja what her favourite Tasmanian plant was ‘It’s a difficult question to answer, but there is one plant that I am intrigued by and that is Isophysis Tasmanica. She looks so beautiful and noble, is rare and you have to do some work to get to see her. She can be found in the Southwest National Park and even though I've made a few trips there, I have yet to see her.’ ‘I am also interested in some of the high-salt-content plants, such as Pigface (Carpobrotus Rossii) and Bower Spinach (Tetragonia Implexicoma). Other plants in my focus are the native willowherbs (Epilobium spp.). I have been looking into whether they could be used in place of the European and largely medicinal Willowherbs. It also appeals to me how they can hide in intricate places.’ Kaja is committed to sourcing all of her plants as raw material directly from local and Australian growers. It’s important to her that the supply chain is short and direct as this improves the quality and potency of the herbal extracts. Custom-made orders are her speciality and she welcomes people to get in contact about their specific needs. ‘I love the small format of the new market and I feel like I can support the local community. There is space and time to chat and I that is really important when you want to help someone’, says Kaja. You can find Kaja at the market this weekend and we encourage you to try some of her products you are sure to be impressed.

08.01.2022 These modern crochet decorator pots from AJC Originals Tasmania are made from 100% recycled t-shirt yarn, and are a wonderful and environmental way to make your home stylish. ‘Several years ago I decided that, rather than buying gifts for my friends and family, I would start to make them. Nothing quite says you really care about someone than a handmade gift,’ says Abbie. Things quickly developed from there and people began asking her to make items for their friends and soon... AJC Originals was born. It’s a great story of a hobby turning into a business. You can find a range of planter and hanging pots in all different colours as well as plenty of yarn and jute cord from the Ministry of Yarn so you can be inspired and make your own creations.

07.01.2022 Cary Lewincamp has been playing at Salamanca Market for over 30 years and you can find him quietly creating some magic with his guitar every weekend. It’s incredible to think how many people have seen him play over the years, have stopped to listen for a moment and enjoyed his gentle and enchanting music. We asked him how he would describe his music ‘It’s difficult to say. Some feel it is classical, but I think it is derivative of everything from jazz, folk and country. You ...absorb as much as you can and hopefully you can create and find your own voice’, says Cary. What is it that keeps you coming back to the market? ‘I love performing. It’s a really honest way to perform. When you play music, if people like it they stop, if they don’t they keep walking. It’s nice to build that connection with people’, he says. Over 30 years, there are bound to be moments that he remembers, from famous people stopping to listen to his music like Bryan Brown, Ainsley Harriott or Shane Jacobson to people that find an instant connection with his music. There have been some great moments ‘Sometimes people stop to listen and then mention that they are a singer. We sometimes do a song together some people have the most beautiful voices’, he says. ‘Or, only a few weeks ago, I was playing away and it got a bit quiet in the market. The stallholders across the road started singing along to the songs I was playing. We were singing songs by James Taylor, Bob Dylan and Carol King, all the old familiar songs.’ So what’s your favourite song? ‘It would have to be You’ve Got a Friend, which is by Carol King and then was made famous by James Taylor. Our friend Christine Sullivan sang it at our garden wedding and it was beautiful. It was a moment that held the space’, he says. And what is the favourite one of yours? ‘The one I haven’t done yet,’ he says with a smile. What a great answer.

07.01.2022 Some delicious new condiments will be at the Hartshorn Distillery stall this weekend which will all have a Grandvewe Cheeses tale to tell. There will be pinot paste, ginseng spice, mustard, vodka jam, wattleseed mustard and a white pearl, which is a Persian fetta made from sheep’s milk. Grandvewe is well known throughout Tasmania as a cheesemaker and Hartshorn vodkas and gins are made from the sheep’s whey. It’s a great tale of complementary products that would make for a ewe-nique gin and vodka tasting experience.

06.01.2022 The Marnie Lives Here pottery, by Chris Kerruish, is a perfect fit for a cup of coffee. In recent stallholder news, you can now find her distinctive coffee cups and plates at Pilgrim Coffee and we are sure they will get plenty of comments and attention, along with the quality of the coffee within them. The warmth in the colours match the historic sandstone rustic walls and her organic style blends effortlessly with the colours and flavours of coffee crema. We spoke to Will f...rom Pilgrim Coffee to find out how this synergy came about. The story is that Chris’s daughter, Marnie, works within the Pilgrim family, and when Will mentioned he was looking for a potter a few years back, she recommended her mum. ‘There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the ceramics’, says Will, from Pilgrim. ‘We could have gone with shop bought cups, but these are really beautiful, they’re not cookie cutter’. We asked Chris why she thought people liked her work so much ‘The world has changed’, she said. ‘We’re so rushed and busy and many of us are worried about our future. There is so much mass produced stuff available now and people are looking for things that can reconnect them back to nature.’ ‘It’s a small, slower process to make my work. It’s something unique that can only come from one person and each piece is different from another.’ Chris has a studio at Mays Beach in Sandford and describes her studio as a really long room with a full wall of glass where she can look out into the bush. She is surrounded by nature, bush, beach and plenty of bracken fern, which provides the inspiration for much of her work. We asked Chris about the Pilgrim cups that she has made ‘Coffee cups need to be a specific size, and as you know, clay shrinks in the kiln and different clays shrink at different percentages. Initially, I was really lucky and the first lot of cups I made were the right size. Now I’m working on making another set of cups, the next size up.’ You can find Chris’s work at the market this weekend, in the middle isle opposite Maldini’s and facing the Salamanca Lawn. And, if you would like to try before you buy, drop into Pilgrim Coffee and experience first-hand just how beautiful this work is to drink from and to have a lovely meal on. #chriskerruish #marnieliveshere #salamancamarket

06.01.2022 There is a world of creativity and wonder to be found at the Australian Art Glass stall this weekend. Chris and Laurie are always warm and welcoming and love to discuss their work. Their hand-blown, glass creations are full of intricacy and there is nothing like a touch of gold lustre here and there to make their pieces truly shine as the light falls on them. Their work often features sea-life, such as anemones, squids, and other wriggly critters. Laurie has also been work...ing recently with glass fusing and has some gorgeous examples on display. 06.01.2022 What does our new smaller market look like from above? We were lucky enough to get some drone footage of our opening week to share with you. We hope you enjoy our bird’s eye, blue and sunny view. Also, if you haven’t checked the local weather yet, this Saturday is going to be an amazing 18-degree day, which is positively balmy after the wet winter we’ve experienced in Tasmania. This will be a lovely day to visit the market and find something special for Father's Day. You will find plenty of unique and locally-made gifts and buying directly from the maker is a wonderful way to shop locally and support small Tasmanian businesses.

06.01.2022 When you wander the stalls this weekend, your eye will definitely be caught by the bold and striking beads on the Originalkazuri stall. Each necklace is of outstanding quality and has been made at the Kazuri factory in Nairobi. Kazuri means ‘small and beautiful’ in Swahili and the ceramic bead factory is located in what used to be part of the Karen Blixen Estate, which is from ‘Out of Africa’ fame. The factory is a World Fair Trade accredited organisation and supports disadv...antaged women in the face of adversity, many of whom are single mothers and outcast from their families. Kerry clearly adores the bright and colourful necklaces. ‘I just love Kazuri, I love the story and all of the colours and the quality is amazing’, she says. There is a large range of colours and designs to choose from and Kerry often helps people find the right selection. ‘I often tell people to bring a top with them so they can find the right colour match. Sometimes people will buy a top or a skirt at another stall and then make their way back to my stall to find the perfect matching necklace.’ Kerry often has people walking past her stall wearing her jewellery. She loves all of the interactions and connections she makes. She has had many international travellers stop at her stall, completely amazed to find Kazuri necklaces in Hobart. One lady had just finished setting up an exhibition of Kazuri in the Guggenheim Museum in New York and was completely blown away to find them at the market here. If you love bold colours and strong designs and are looking for something original to spice up a winter wardrobe, you will love the full collection at the market. There are so many to choose from and if you can’t decide on a favourite, why not select a few? You can find Original Kazuri at the market this weekend and on our online store at https://salamancamarketstore.com.au/produc/original-kazuri/

We are keen to try this one as we are sure it will be 'toto'-ally tasty. Find this one and the Diplomat, another of their new cheeses, at the Hartshorn Distillery site this weekend. They will be in the middle isle, opposite Grape Food and Wine Bar, and facing the lawns.

03.01.2022 The coffee is on. One sugar or two?

02.01.2022 The botanical jewellery by Janny McKinnon is detailed and simply stunning. The inspiration behind this work comes from bushwalking through the Tasmanian wilderness, including Mt Field and Lake St Claire. Janny is a keen bushwalker and is forever looking down and finding inspiration from the forest floor. She uses the leaves from Celery Top Pine, Huon pine, Myrtle, Pencil Pine and bracken. Each leaf is cast individually in plaster and is burnt out in the kiln, then the metal...s added to the shapes left behind. Each mould is unique and ephemeral and breaks during this process and can’t be used again. Many people that fall in love with her work are bushwalkers themselves. Having walked through many unique and wild places, they often want to wear something to remind them of their journey. Janny will be at the market this weekend and you can find her work in the middle isle near the silos end.
