20.01.2022 Just picked this up from one of the History sites. Just a note to advise anyone searching NSW early BDM Records from First Settlers to mid 1850s that BDM has redone its online index of BDM and no longer includes Church Codes on site. Thus if you are looking for relatives born in those years you will not know what church/area the event was held. Note you can still find the entire list of Church Codes just not on the Index page where you are searching for your ancestor. The Church Code needs to be with the details of the person you are searching. This omission makes it almost impossible to find your ancestor.

17.01.2022 Early paintings and the artists themselves can often help with family history research. Prahran Mechanics Institute Collections Librarian Ellen Coates will give... a short talk on studying art and the artists to assist with family history research at her monthly visit to Sale Library on Wednesday 4 September from 11 am. The PMI Victorian History Library provides the states most extensive history collection available for loan and visits Sale each month for locals to browse some of the collection or order books from the collection in advance. Books can also be delivered and returned through other Wellington Shire library branches. Mechanics Institutes in Australia date from the 1850s when, following the British tradition, they provided lectures, books and newspapers for workers to expand their knowledge. Prahran Mechanics Institute was founded in 1854. Its long term home was at 140 High Street Prahran but it is now located at 39 St. Edmonds Road, Prahran. Ms Coates will be at Sale Library from 11 am to 2 pm and will present her talk at 11 am. Join PMI or browse the catalogue at www.pmi.net.au Image: Louie Riggall, who lived in Glenmaggie and later served overseas, painted local scenes as did many visiting artists. See more
