17.01.2022 The Funeral Of Lachlan Heywood

16.01.2022 Percy Stuart Shugg Plan 2 (Methodist), Section K, Allotment 17 Percy Shugg is referred to in an earlier general post about Sale Cemetery on Gippsland History. Percy served as Sexton/caretaker from May 1925 but, with renovations at the Cemetery Lodge creating a damp issue, and his daughter and others suffering in those conditions, he left after a year.... Born in Rochester, Percy was 32 years and 10 months and working as a green grocer when he enlisted in Melbourne on 26 July 1915. He served overseas in Egypt, France and UK as a Driver with AIF 15th Battalion . In August 1919 he married dressmaker Kate Berryman Richards, 24, in St Ives, Cornwall. He disembarked in Melbourne on Boxing Day 1919 and was discharged in February 1920. He was successful in obtaining a soldier settlement block at Kilmany in July 1921 - Lot 6, 126 acres, capital value 1890. Tragically the Shuggs only daughter at the time, baby Winifred, died in December 1921 after falling into a tub of scalding water in Kilmany. The Shuggs sold up in 1924, disposing of the whole of his fine dairy herd, farming implements etc. After his term at the Cemetery he appears to have taken up allotments in Wilsons and/or Boultons estates. The family lived in Ross Street, Sale and later in Market Street. He suffered pneumonia in 1930 and was again hospitalized in 1953. He died aged 76 in February 1958. Kate lived to 85 and died in 1980. His parents, Myrtlebank schoolteacher James Shugg and wife Annie, also lived in Market street at one time or perhaps lived with Percy. Annie, who lived to be 90, made a point of always celebrating her February birthday at Seaspray. The three Shugg graves (from left to right) are James and Annie, Winifred and Percy and Katie. Kates parents, retired stonemason Thomas James Richards (died August 1938) and Elizabeth (died August 1935), who came to Australia in 1922, are also buried nearby. See more

13.01.2022 With such a large number of posts from numerous sources in the History Week: History Behind the Headstone, Sale Cemetery is obviously historically important to the local and surrounding areas we are the final resting place for so many of the wider regions pioneers. Bairnsdale magistrate H. C. Stavely, Maffras Allan McLean, Rosedales King family, are just a few to join well known Sale names such as Arbuckle, Login, Leslie, Allman, Hagenauer, Lyon, Treloar, Stephenson an...d Cobain. The earliest marked grave at the Cemetery is that of William Wood who died on 1855 (see the Fanny Swan entry https://www.facebook.com/groups/1755971574632862/search/) but a couple of earlier ones are recorded. An 11 acre reserve (later added to) was gazetted in 1857 but the records before 1861 are incomplete. Sales first burial ground was on the banks of the Flooding Creek near the Cunninghame Street bridge, with at least three burials between 1848 and 1850. This site was marked by the Cemetery Trust in 2012. It is interesting to note that the Cemetery Trust is responsible for the grounds and safety but is not responsible for the graves. In fact it cannot spend its own funds on the graves so it is important to maintain the graves of your ancestors. Cemetery Friends groups, local historical societies etc can raise funds for maintenance and memorialisation, but need approval of any descendants who can be traced and permission from the Cemetery for any works. A great example is this recognition of Anders (Andy) Anderson by Yallourn North and District Historical Society at Sale Cemetery. Andy was born in Sweden and lived a simple life on the banks of a creek (later registered as Andersons Creek) at Brown Coal Mine, now known as Yallourn North. Forgotten until this plaque was installed, we now have the story for future generations. And the History Behind the Headstones has demonstrated just how important and fascinating that is. See more

12.01.2022 EILEEN WAUGH 4/9/1950 - 5/3/2020: Yesterday, we lost our mum. The celebration of her life will be held at Sale Catholic Cathedral 1pm Thursday 12th March. She ...was a leader in her community, a carer, a joker, a fiercely proud grandmother, a sports fan (at any event involving her grandkids), a devoted wife, a fighter, an advocate and a passionately devoted mother, mother-in-law and great-grandmother. She worked on farms, in stores, at a chicken abattoir and as a volunteer for countless community organisations. The job that she most loved was caring for her family - and when her Johnny died 6 weeks ago, it was almost as if she could finally stop fighting, because shed been able to care for him until the end. She was the hero in many songs that Ive written. Her favourite was Heyfield Girl (she used to introduce herself to my friends by saying Im the Heyfield Girl). Making the music video for this song - and having mum and dad star in it - is an absolute highlight of my life. If you cant be there to celebrate her life, can I ask that you please play her song at 1pm Thursday? https://open.spotify.com/track/5UlRLrpz26ZTf3C2EA3oQ9 See more
