24.01.2022 Plastic Free July Tip Buy Less We live in a world where were always tempted to buy whether that be food, drinks, clothes, stationary, magazines, make up, homewares, etc. Next time you want to buy something, ask yourself if you really need it. Chances are that you dont. If you do, here are some key questions to ask:... How much plastic is being used in the product and its packaging? Is there an option that involves less plastic / more ethical production methods? Can you mend it instead of buying a new one? (heres a great post on https://www.therogueginger.com//modern-mending-zero-waste-) Can you borrow or hire it instead of buying it? And can you share your things with others? E.g. toys, books, etc (there are lots of local Facebook groups great for this) Can you buy one second hand? (eg at Salvos or Smith Family stores, Ebay, Etsy, Depop) Do you have any other suggestions? Id love for you to share them below

24.01.2022 Do you have a four legged friend in your life? Are they a little prone to separation anxiety, getting scared during thunderstorms or barking at the postie? And did you know that you can use herbs and other natural remedies with your pooch? That’s right, our awesome herbal allies aren’t just beneficial for us, many are also helpful for creatures great and small! I’ve made up a mix for our little one, Leroy, that includes herbs like chamomile, hypericum and passionflower, and I do believe it’s working! This is a great post by Herbal Academy exploring the various calming herbs suited for the little doggo in your life https://theherbalacademy.com/calming-canine-herbs/

24.01.2022 Nom nom this apple crumble is a family favourite Its very simple to make and is really versatile (feel free to use whatever nuts and seeds, leave out the coconut if youre not a fan, experiment with other spices like nutmeg and cardamom, or throw in some extras like grated ginger or cacao nibs). I looove serving this with some fresh berries, vanilla ice cream or Vaalia yoghurt. Yumbo!... http://www.ninakingsfordsmith.com.au//sweetde/applecrumble

24.01.2022 My dearest clinic helper, aka our doggo Leroy. Hes always willing to give me a helping hand in the clinic and loves meeting my clients (both face to face and Zoom consults). I think hes his happiest though when I take breaks and have a cuddle with himsuch an affectionate little thing! Ive heard some funny stories recently about pets with many of us working from home and spending more time with them. Do you have a little animal helper keeping you company while you work from home? Id looove to see a photo or hear about them P.S. If youd like to meet Leroy next time you have an appointment, let me know and Im sure hed love to say hello!

21.01.2022 This is such a beautiful quote, I love it so much. What are some of your favourite quotes?

21.01.2022 A behind the scenes shot of a day in the life of Leroy, my clinic assistant. He makes for a wonderful blanket / hot water bottle of sorts when he sits on my lap . Although Ill admit he can be a little distracting too

20.01.2022 Hahahah YES! Although I often do this with food too

20.01.2022 PERIMENOPAUSE Perimenopause is a fact of life, but its something that we dont talk about enough. Its often seen as a taboo topic or something to be afraid of, but I want to change that! Its something Im incredibly passionate about supporting women through, so every Wednesday this month, Ill be sharing some info, advice and support about this pivotal time during our lives. First of all, I want to try to dismantle some of the fear around perimenopause. Its not a disease ...or something to be scared of, but an important, normal and natural process during a womans life. Many of my clients feel like perimenopause is going to be horrible, or that their body isnt doing what its supposed to do when they come to this stage of their life. Although perimenopause is a universal phenomenon, the way that we experience it is incredibly unique. Each and every one of us will experience it differently. It may begin as early as your 30s through to your 50s. It may last anywhere from a year up to a decade. And it may be characterised by no symptoms at all to a whole plethora of symptoms. Heres a great quote from The Herbal Extract Company of Australia to get us thinking Perimenopause is more than a biological event, and societal and cultural factors contribute greatly to how a woman will react. Many women suffer menopause in silence and shame because they are living in a society that worship youthfulness. So, lets try to reframe how we think about perimenopause. It is not a time of shame or fear, nor a sign that our body is becoming weak. Instead, its a sign of strength, of the beautiful transformation of your body, of celebration that you are entering some of the best years of your life!

18.01.2022 Im sure youre all very well aware of my love affair with herbs and their healing potential, and I find it especially cool that often all we need to do is walk into the garden and gather some to experience their magic. Its incredibly empowering and Mother Nature is so generous to gift them to us like that This is a great article that explores some key herbs to grow in your own medicine garden https://www.tenthacrefarm.com/8-herbs-medicine-garden/

18.01.2022 There’s still time to donate to our Christmas food drive! We’ll now be dropping off all donations to FoodBank tomorrow, so you can still drop off items to donate today See the post below for more info!

18.01.2022 Ahhh I am so in love with nature and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by it! Here’s a recent photo of some lovely native plants down by the waterfront at Mortlake

18.01.2022 Lemons, beautiful lemons! Our darling lemon tree is well over 38 years old it was here and growing strong when we moved in in 1982 and still produces an abundance of lemons each year! I almost always have a wedge of lemon on the side of my dinner, I find it to be such a delicious addition to veggies, seafood, soups and pretty much all savoury meals.... Lemon is also a great alkaliser, helps increase the absorption of iron from plant based sources and can be very supportive for the digestive system

18.01.2022 This tea sounds absolutely beautiful. I havent tried this exact mix together before, Im definitely looking forward to trying it. Tea, and warm drinks in general, definitely feel very grounding and comforting to me. What things do you do that provide you with a sense of grounding and nourishment? Some ideas might be going for a walk, putting your feet on bare grass, having a warm shower or bath, or even lying down. Id love to know. We can share ideas and build a beautiful nourishment list! Let me know below

18.01.2022 Tissue salts! Many of you will know that I love to use tissue salts. Over the past 40+ years Ive seen them work time and time again for myself, my friends and family, and my clients. One of my favourite tissue salts for this time of year is Kali Mur the salt for mucous membranes. With the colder weather and immunity on our minds, looking after our mucous membrane health is an important thing to consider.... Kali Mur is a stand out in my mind for three very clear pictures: The first stand out picture is whenever there is thick white or whitish grey mucous, like in the middle stages of a cold and maybe when the tongue has a thick white coating. The second is where there are lymphatic swellings you know the swollen glands you notice in your neck when your body is fighting an infection or even in your armpit or groin? The third is related to the skin where there is a thick white or greyish discharge. Consider using Kali Mur for A cold is in its second stage where the mucous is thicker and whiter than initially Blocked eustachian tubes (ie mucous is blocking the middle ear) Swollen glands Tonsillitis Ulcerated sore throat Eczema (with a white mealy coating) especially in infants P.S. Did you know that I offer tissue salts courses for both personal use and practitioners? They can be arranged by request, so please contact me if youd like to organise one (the practitioner workshops are ATMS approved and can be used for CPE points). You can also find out more here https://www.sallykingsfordsmith.com.au/events

17.01.2022 Painful periods. Heavy bleeding. Irregular periods. Mid cycle spotting. Menopause. PCOS. Endometriosis. Missing periods. PMS. Low libido. Far too many women experience these sorts of things, however they’re often ignored because they’re considered ‘normal’, are thought of as embarrassing, or are simply put on the back burner because other things are considered more important. Last month I posted a series about menopause, and I want to encourage everyone to keep the conversat...ion around women’s health going! Please, let this be the gentle nudge you need to put yourself first and talk to someone about any niggling health issues. It’s oh so important to make your health a priority. And please, do get in touch with me if you’d like to chat more, I’d love to be able to help Image from @iuliastration

17.01.2022 As many of you know I absolutely looove to use tissue salts. For over 40 years, theyve stood by me, my loved ones and my clients. They can be used with babies, children, women who are pregnant or lactating, the elderly and alongside various prescription medications. 16.01.2022 KALI PHOS Have you heard of Kali Phos before? It’s one of the 12 tissue salts that I often prescribe to my patients (alongside herbs and other remedies). Kali phos is one of my top two tissue salts and pairs beautifully with mag phos for supporting us during stressful times. It’s the salt for calming the nerves and mind which I feel pretty much all of us could benefit from! ... Here are some ways that Kali Phos can support us Helps maintain a healthy nervous system Wonderful in any situation where you’re using extra brain power by helping maintain focus Consider using kali phos in the following conditions stress, nervousness, exhaustion, ‘brain fag’, when you’re feeling emotionally and/or mentally run down, irritability and impatience, depression, anxiety, children’s tantrums, sleep disturbances due to a busy mind If you're interested in learning more about tissue salts and how you can use them at home or in your clinic, let me know as I run both personal use and practitioner workshops about them (in fact, you can find out more about my workshops here www.sallykingsfordsmith.com.au/events).

16.01.2022 Who else remembers caterpillar logs as a kid? Theyre so easy to make and such a fun activity with the kids its a great way to introduce them to different types of foods and textures, and to get them to be hands on! Love these ones as an idea (from https://www.female.com.au/blueberry-and-celery-caterpillar.)

12.01.2022 Would love to have stopped for a chat with these beauties. Im sure they had lots to tell me, but its not so easy when you have a *Leroy (*over enthusiastic jack russel cross) on the end of a lead. While I was keen to stop and chat he had too many smells to explore and piddles to do so we hurried on. #itsadogslife

10.01.2022 Holiday dates I’ll be taking some time off from the clinic from 23rd December to 13th January. I’m looking forward to putting my feet up and relaxing, and having extra cuddles from this little one

10.01.2022 Reiki You may not know that, aside from being a herbalist, I’m also a reiki practitioner. If you’re unfamiliar with reiki, it’s wonderful for relaxation, stress reduction and supporting healing. It boosts us mentally, physical and emotionally. Most people fall into a deep relaxation during a reiki treatment, often falling asleep. Many of my patients tell me that they feel really relaxed, revived and often lighter as if they’ve released a heavy load.... One thing I love about reiki is that no two treatments are the same, and that every reiki practitioner brings their own unique touch to their treatments. If you’d like to book in for a reiki session, you can do so here https://sally-kingsford-smith.cliniko.com/bookings#service. To find out more, get in touch with me via Facebook or [email protected] P.S. here’s a snippet into what it looks like when you get a reiki treatment

09.01.2022 Nom nom this potato idea looks awesome! You also have to give the pumpkin seeds idea a go, we do this all the time at home (but a more simple version we just bake them on their ownthey taste DELICIOUS!)

08.01.2022 Spring is here! Ahh can you feel it in the air? I love the welcoming of spring (although I also do love all the other seasons too). Spring means beautiful pops of colour on trees and plants, sunny days, and that beautiful spring smell. I also love that a new season means a new array of wonderful seasonal produce. Do you ever think about eating seasonally? Not many of us do, but its worth thinking about for lots of reasons from supporting local farmers, to being able to eat produce when its at its peak in terms of taste and nutrients. Heres a wonderfully simple guide about eating seasonally in Australia. Some of my favourites for spring are grapefruit, asparagus and beetroot! http://seasonalfoodguide.com/australia-general-seasonal-fre

08.01.2022 PERIMENOPAUSE & PHYTOESTROGENS As you may know, Im using every Wednesday this month to talk all things perimenopause! Today, were exploring one of the various things you can do to support yourself during this time of your life - phytoestrogens. Firstly, its important to note that perimenopause is a time of our lives characterised by profound reproductive and hormonal changes, and is a time when our body greatly benefits from some extra love and support (so too does ...our mental and emotional health). So, what foods are supportive for us during this time? Phytoestrogens! These are a certain type of compound that, when broken down in the body, have a weak oestrogen-like effect. Theyve been proven to reduce hot flashes and vaginal dryness, and overall are a great support to us during this time. See more

07.01.2022 Good old technologyits so handy but it also has its cons doesnt it like feeling like our brains are switched on 24/7 and also having increased exposure to EMFs (i.e. electromagnetic fields thatre produced by things like our phones and wifi). Whats cool is that we always have the choice to reduce the amount of time we spend on technology, as well as our exposure to it. Here are a few ideas Dont keep your phone in the bedroom. If you use it for an alarm, switch it ...to airplane mode and move it as far away from your bed as possible. Better yet, switch to an old school alarm clock Keep other electronics out of your room, especially your wifi router Whenever any electronics arent in use, turn them off at the power point Put your phone on airplane mode as much as possible Use earphones or loudspeaker when using your phone, instead of holding it up to your ear Keep electronics on / near your body as little as possible eg dont keep your phone in your pocket, dont sit with your computer on your lap, sit as far away from appliances like your tv and fridge as possible Switch your cordless home phone to a corded phone P.S. these crazy photos were taken by Luis Hernan and show wifi signals captured using long exposure technology! So ghost-like!

07.01.2022 ANXIETY - CAN YOU RELATE? Life is full of highs and lows, and most of us will be somewhat familiar with feelings of anxiety and stress. For some of us, these feelings are fleeting. For others, they can be intense, frequent and feel like they’re taking over our lives. Did you know that:... - Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia - 25% of Australian’s will experience an anxiety condition during their lifetime that’s equivalent to 4.96 million people today - 1 in 3 women will experience an anxiety condition at some stage during their life - 1 in 5 men will experience an anxiety condition at some stage during their life And the stats are getting worse. Are you wondering about the difference between feeling anxious and having an anxiety disorder? Beyond Blue sums it up really well here Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. While stress and anxious feelings are a common response to a situation where we feel under pressure, they usually pass once the stressful situation has passed, or ‘stressor’ is removed. Everyone feels anxious from time to time. When anxious feelings don't go away, happen without any particular reason or make it hard to cope with daily life it may be the sign of an anxiety condition. Every Wednesday this month, I’ll be sharing something different about anxiety support - from herbs to foods to tissue salts. If this is something that you can relate to and would like some support, please reach out to me or an organisation like Beyond Blue www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/anxiety

07.01.2022 Ive recently just finished a 3 part course on medical astrology with the wonderful Kira Sutherland from Uberhealth. Its so fascinating to learn about the interplay between our sun signs and their connections to health and disease, body parts and systems, nutrition and herbal medicine. Considering astrology and sun signs is something I learnt from Dorothy Hall and I already love using it with clients. This course has given me a deeper understanding and Im looking forward to incorporating more! If this is something youre intrigued by, or if youd like help with anything else, send me a message or book online through www.sallykingsfordsmith.com.au

03.01.2022 HERBS FOR ANXIETY As you might have seen last week, every Wednesday this month I’ll be sharing something different about anxiety. There are many treatment options for anxiety, including meditations, counseling, herbal and nutritional medicine. Herbal medicine can be a wonderful way to support people with anxiety. Many of these herbs have been used for hundreds of years and now have scientific research behind them to support their efficacy. Here are some of my favourites:... Withania This herb is an adaptogen a herb that helps the body adapt to various stressors. I liken taking withania to having a hug from your best friend. Lemon Balm Wonderfully relieving for anxiety, especially when there are digestive issues involved (anxiety and gut issues often go hand in hand). Kava I like to use kava for acute situations like panic attacks as it can really help ‘take the edge off’ These are just a few of my favourite herbal allies for anxiety. There are many more! Others include chamomile, hops, Californian poppy, motherwort, tulsi, magnolia, passionflower and oats

02.01.2022 New Masterclass dates - The Heart and Art of Traditional Herbal Medicine webinar series! - https://mailchi.mp//new-masterclass-dates-the-heart-and-ar

01.01.2022 Last Friday, I wrapped up the latest round of my masterclass series, ‘The Heart & Art of Traditional Herbal Medicine Bringing People and Plants Together’. I can’t quite believe that this was the 7th time I’d run the masterclass! It seems like only the other day that I had the idea to start teaching other practitioners about the wonderful world of herbs, person pictures and drop dosing through Dorothy Hall’s philosophies (hale Dorothy). With each round, I find myself enjoy...ing teaching more and more (and my nervousness about using technology is all but gone woohoo!). I’m taking a moment to give myself a big pat on the back for all of thisbecause I’m darn proud of myself! What are you proud of yourself for? I’d absolutely love to hear and help you celebrate, let me know below! P.S. don’t mind that stain on my notes I’m pretty sure it’s from from garden tea I usually make for myself when I’m teaching (aka a wonderful mix of tulsi, thyme, rosemary and other herbs from my garden)
