21.01.2022 A great example of how technology can be used to make more informed selection decisions! Stockbook live entry screen is being used at classing to display pedigree, ASBVs, raw data, birth type/rear type Auto- record board set up to allocate class and drive the auto- drafter... Visual traits can also be collected using this method or imported to Stockbook if collected separately This is a system that we are using with our clients.

17.01.2022 Capturing ewe reproduction information - what are the benefits in a commercial situation? Electronically recording the following reproduction triats is an easy way to keep track of individual ewe reproduction year on year: 1. Scanning information - dries, singles and multiples... 2. Wet/ dry status of ewes at marking or weaning - lambed and lost This information allows you to: Identify ewes that are getting pregnant and rearing at least one lamb year on year Identify ewes that are not getting pregnant, or failing to rear a lamb year on year Use this information when making ewe selection decisions - retain your most productive ewes and cull the ewes getting a free ride i.e. not giving you a return on investment If your pregnancy scanner is unable to accurately record individual pregnancy scanning results themselves, it is a good idea to have someone standing at the crate recording as the ewe is scanned. We find this is the most accurate way of recording and this is a service we offer our clients. Alternatively you can draft ewes as they are being scanned and then run ewes down the race immediately after scanning and do a roll call for each mob e.g. dries, singles and twins.

12.01.2022 Accuracy is key when using eID! If your pregnancy scanner is unable to accurately record pregnancy status themselves, you can: 1. Have an extra person standing at the scanning crush to record each ewe as the scanner does them. Make sure the ewes are not jumping on top of one another to ensure the correct information is recorded with the correct ewe. ... Or 2. Do a roll call down the race after all of the ewes have been scanned. Record each mob in a separate session on your stick reader i.e. dries, singles, twins, triplets.

10.01.2022 We work with a number of ram and commercial breeders who are transitioning to a non-mulesed flock by breeding for breech strike resistance. A key part of this process involves visually scoring the traits that contribute to fly strike susceptibility using the Visual Sheep Scores Guide (https://www.wool.com//visual-sheep-scores-new-version-now/). Pictured is Sam recording breech wrinkle and breech cover at lamb marking, and body wrinkle at post- weaning stage. This informat...ion is submitted to Sheep Genetics to generate breech wrinkle (BWR) and breech cover (BCOV) ASBVs, and as more data is collected SG will be able to report body wrinkle (BDWR) ASBVs. Why is body wrinkle recorded at a later stage? Breech wrinkle cannot be recorded at a later age for flocks that still mules (with pain relief). The genetic correlation between an early breech wrinkle record (e.g. marking) and a later body wrinkle record (e.g. yearling) is around 0.7, therefore these traits are considered highly correlated. The later age record is valuable to the EBWR ASBV calculation as some animals will grow into their skin i.e. plainer as mature animals than they were at the time of recording early breech wrinkle score. 10.01.2022 30% of your flocks performance is due to genetics how much time are you investing in genetic selection? This week Sally Martin and Tom Granleese (DPI, NSW) ran a workshop via zoom on smart ram buying and RamSelect for commercial producers as part of the University of New England/ MerinoLink DNA Stimulation Project. Key takeaways... 1. Revisit your breeding objective what are the key traits (profit drivers) you focus on? 2. RamSelect is a powerful tool for commercial producers who buy rams from performance recording studs: https://www.ramselect.com.au/#/home 3. Make ram sale day easier for yourself by investing time prior to the sale to make a short list of rams to purchase (or get a service provider to do it for you). 05.01.2022 With lamb marking underway in some areas, it is worth revisiting some key recommendations to reduce the susceptibility of breech fly strike with lamb tail length. Shorter tailed ewes are three times more likely to get struck than ewes with longer tails (to the 4th joint).

02.01.2022 How do you select your replacement ewes? Some of our commercial breeder clients utilise RAMPOWER selection indexes when selecting replacement Merino ewe hoggets. This involves collecting individual animal data on key profit driving traits such as:... Fleece weight (kg) Micron (um) Body weight (kg) The data is submitted to RAMPOWER to generate a within flock selection index which we then use to rank the animal. The selection is done in conjunction with visual selection for structure and wool type. This process allows you to select animals of superior genetic merit based on a balance of key traits to retain in your breeding flock. Pictured are some of our clients 2019 drop ewes.
