25.01.2022 BREASTFEEDING - COVID-19 advice from the Australian Breastfeeding Association What is coronavirus (COVID-19) and what are its symptoms? COVID-19 is a new strai...n of coronavirus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).1 Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath.1 Can you still breastfeed if you have COVID-19? Breastfeeding helps protect babies from a variety of illnesses.2 This is because breastmilk contains antibodies and other immune protective factors. If you have been diagnosed with or are suspected of having COVID-19, care should be taken to avoid spreading the virus to your baby while you continue to breastfeed (see below for more information).1 If you have stopped breastfeeding there is help available to restart, please call the Breastfeeding Helpline for support. What if you are too unwell to breastfeed? If you are too unwell to breastfeed your baby, another option is to express regularly so that your baby keeps receiving your breastmilk and so is less likely to become unwell. Before expressing, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If using a breast pump, it is important to ensure proper cleaning is followed. See our article Expressing and storing breastmilk for more information. Will my supply reduce if I have COVID-19 Some mothers notice a supply drop when they are unwell. If this happens to you, you can call to speak to an Australian Breastfeeding Association counsellor for support, see a lactation consultant or a medical advisor. You may also find it helpful to read our article Increasing supply. How can I reduce the risk of spreading the virus to my baby? Even if you don’t have symptoms of COVID-19, there are things we can all do in order to minimise the chances of spreading COVID-19 to others. For example, it is important to: Wash your hands often using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing, and immediately throwing away any used tissues. Avoid close contact with anyone who has cold or flu-like symptoms. Seeing a doctor if you have a fever, cough or feel like it is hard to breathe.1 For further information about COVID-19 and breastfeeding, see: Link to ABAs article about it https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/covid-19 World Health Organization: Home care for patients with suspected novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection presenting with mild symptoms and management of contacts Q&A on coronaviruses (COVID-19) Image of my beautiful Ottie feeding today captured by my sister Hilary Walker Photography

24.01.2022 The postpartum period or the fourth trimester is such a delicate time in a family’s life. Here are some great suggestions on how you can love and support another family during this time. What did you find helped you most in your 4th trimester?

22.01.2022 I reminded a client of this during the week and thought maybe some of you might also benefit from this reminder too. Our little people are all so different- mine sure are! 11.01.2022 I wonder how many of you can relate to this?

10.01.2022 Colostrum really is an amazing first food for your baby.

09.01.2022 I have definitely felt all of these feels throughout my breastfeeding journey. I often say to new Mums that it is the most selfless and beautiful gift you can give to your baby - anything this worthwhile takes love, dedication and lots of time.

09.01.2022 This is an excellent overview of Covid 19...

06.01.2022 Who can relate to this? This made me laugh, I’ve definitely thought this before

04.01.2022 There's so much I'd like to tell that tired face... One day, you'll wonder if he's ok because he's slept for longer than two hours in a row. One day, you'll sto...p posting in sleep forums for advice. You'll stop scouring the internet for solutions. Because you've found the answer within yourself. One day, he'll let his dad rock him to sleep without screaming. You'll feel redundant but in a good, freeing way. You'll dance around the kitchen in celebration at your new-found sense of freedom, not quite knowing what to do with yourself. One day, 2.5 years in, he will sleep through the night for the first time, and you'll be really chuffed. But it won't be the all-singing, all-dancing fanfare you've imagined all this time. Because the acceptance came sooner. One day, you'll catch sight of yourself in the mirror and see a well-rested person staring back at you. The colour having slowly returned to your face. One day, you'll no longer run on empty but rather a full (ish) tank. You'll start the day with a spring in your step rather than a tired trudge. One day, you'll think back to those damning conversations and wonder why you ever let them fill your head with doubt. One day, you'll look back with nothing but pride at the way you responded to your child's needs, in a world that still seems so intent on denying them. 02.01.2022 I love our little community! Coming to work to see the beautiful Nikki Stambolie and Ashley Geelan made my day. Then I found this lovely gift in the tearoom, nothing better than fresh produce.
