19.01.2022 Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was a French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher. She began her piano studies at an early age and once her extraordinary abilities became apparent, she learned from such masters as Moscheles and Hummel. At the age of 15 she studied composition with Anton Reicha, the professor at the Conservatoire. In the 1930s, Farrenc gained considerable fame as a performer and her reputation became such that in 1842 she became the only woman to be appointed to... the position of Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatory - a position she held for 30 years and the only such appointment for a woman for the entire 19th century. When she started composing in the 1820s and 1830s, Farrenc wrote exclusively for piano. Several of these early pieces drew high praise from critics, including Robert Schumann. She then decided to try her hand at larger compositions for both chamber ensemble and orchestra. Farrencs chamber music became generally regarded as her finest work. Although she was writing such highly acclaimed music, Farrenc was paid far less than her male counterparts. She made it one of her missions to fight for equality, and after at least a decade of persistence she finally was granted equal pay after the very successful premiere of her nonet. Salon Project will be performing Farrencs Sextet in C Minor for Piano and Winds at its Music, She Wrote concert at 4pm on Sunday, July 12th at The Button Factory. Only a handful of tickets remain, so dont miss out on this very special concert! salonproject.com.au/concerts #farrenc #chambermusic #femalecomposers #womencomposers #pianoandwinds #musicwithfriends #salonproject

14.01.2022 Margaret Sutherland (1896-1984) was an Australian composer, pianist and teacher whose work spanned over 55 years - pre- and post-World War II. Critics regard Sutherland as one of the most significant composers of Australias post-colonial period. Her output ranged in genres from opera, ballet and theatre music, to vocal, orchestral, chamber and instrumental music, with much music written for young performers. She contended that female composers had a different sensibility and... aesthetic priorities from male composers, but that their contribution was no less important. We wholeheartedly agree. Salon Project will be performing Margaret Sutherlands Little Suite for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon at our Music, She Wrote concert on July 12th. This short piece, written in 1960, is representative of her lighter, more divertimento-like chamber works. It shows the influence of composers such as Bartok, Hindemith, Prokofiev and Shostakovich with echoes of the pastoral styles of Bax and Vaughan Williams. Tickets are limited and on sale now on our website! 07.01.2022 Luise Adolpha Le Beau (1850-1927) was a German composer, pianist, teacher, and music critic. Le Beau briefly studied piano with Clara Schumann and Franz Lachner, but her primary instructor was Joseph Rheinberger, who was a true champion of her playing and compositions for a long time. During her studies with Rheinberger, Le Beau experienced her most fruitful period as a composer and pianist, resulting in many of her best works, composition prizes, favourable performance revie...ws, and meetings with Brahms and Liszt. Le Beaus composition style is characterized by strong, well-shaped themes, strict sonata form, colourful harmonies and leitmotifs. Salon Project will be performing Le Beaus lush Quartet for Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello at its Music, She Wrote concert at 4pm on Sunday, July 12th at The Button Factory. Tickets are getting close to selling out, so book today! 02.01.2022 Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) was an English composer and violist, who after finishing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London became one of the first female professional orchestral musicians. Clarke has been regarded as the most distinguished British female composer of the inter-war generation. Striking for its passion and power, her music spans a range of 20th-century styles including Impressionism, post-Romantic, and neo-Classical. Clark...e faced a great deal of adversity during her musical career, largely due to the fact that she was a woman. But she achieved what she called my one little whiff of success in 1919 when her Viola Sonata tied for 1st Place in a competition sponsored by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Ely Ruttico, viola, will be performing Rebecca Clarkes Morpheus, along with Peter de Jager on piano at our Music, She Wrote concert on July 12th. This beautiful work develops a single melody through colouristic devices such as pentatonic glissandos on the piano and artificial harmonics on the viola.
