22.01.2022 Meet Leslie Williams Leslie Williams was looking for a different path in life, looking to seek employment that offered him more opportunities and experi...ence. Having already heard about Saltbush Employment Services VTEC Program through word of mouth, when Leslie’s Jobactive referred him to a Recruitment Session for a position with DT Hobbs, he was eager to give it a go. Leslie was then signed up to the Saltbush VTEC Program in May 2020 and started his new role as a Labourer/Trades Assistant/Operator with DT Hobbs all within 2 weeks of his initial referral. Leslie hit the ground running, gaining his HR License, and overcoming the challenges that faced him. His biggest goal was to maintain his employment with DT Hobbs. Working with his Mentor Aron from Darwin Employment Services, Leslie took the opportunity to focus on his goal and accepted the support that was provided from the VTEC Program. While at DT Hobbs, Leslie found his new role rewarding, where he was able to take on more responsibility and leadership. Enjoying the opportunity to travel away for three weeks to the Tiwi Islands. With hopes of sticking around with DT Hobbs for as long as possible, Leslie has really taken pride in the work he does. DT Hobbs jokes that Leslie is well and truly DT Hobbs furniture at this point! as he has become an invaluable/irreplaceable member of their team. It has been an absolute pleasure the work with Leslie in achieving his goals, the whole Saltbush Employment Services Team wish Leslie all the best in his future!

15.01.2022 Meet Tania Phillips Mother of four, Tania Phillips was an Aboriginal Health Practitioner in Child Health, working with children aged between 7 and 14 in... Ceduna, South Australia. Unfortunately, this was not an ongoing position for Tania, so she found herself jobless and almost homeless due to lack of housing. She heard of the employment opportunities and housing availabilities in Alice Springs. Even though she only had one family member in Alice, she decided to make the move to try and build a good future for her family. This was not an easy task for Tania as she did not receive much financial assistance with relocating, but scraping every penny up, Tania was able to make the move to Alice Springs. Once in Alice, Tania didn’t have much luck finding employment until she commenced into the VTEC program with Saltbush Employment Services. Her Mentor referred her for positions and encouraged her to stay positive. With Tania’s work background and good work ethic, she was sure to secure something! Then in February, Tania’s life changed as she commenced employment with Disability Advocacy Service as Administration Peer Support. Tania’s employer has been extremely supportive which has allowed her to develop new skills and utilise her existing skills. Two months after commencing employment, Tania enrolled into a Cert IV in Training and Assessment and has passed every unit. She has found some of the modules challenging, especially her presentations (one being a 3-hour presentation) which she had to facilitate. This has not deterred Tania though. Through sheer determination and a fighting spirit to smash her goals, she reached out and received assistance from health providers in the area to complete one of her presentations. Tania has now completed her 26 weeks with VTEC. The team at Saltbush are so proud and wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Thank you, Tania, for being such a deadly role model. Keep smashing those goals!

14.01.2022 It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas. The Darwin Future Stars boxed up some Territory style sweets last week for the 25 Members of Northern Territory P...arliament Lauren Moss : Member for Casuarina asked us if we could make some Christmas treats as end of year gifts for the 25 Members of Parliament as a way to promote Saltbush Social Enterprises and a local Casuarina business with Saltbush Café and Future Stars Training Centre located at The Quarter in Casuarina Square. Using our favourite unique Territory harvested bush foods, the Future Stars students created some delicious Saltbush, Wattleseed & Chocolate Brownies and Kakadu Plum & Wattleseed Shortbread. Our students then boxed and wrapped them up to some Christmas tunes !

07.01.2022 Meet Jacob Baker... Jacob Baker met with Saltbush Employment Services on the 3rd on December 2019. Jacob expressed an interest in a Station Hand Trainee...ship. After completing his 2-week training course in Tennant Creek, Jacob was taken to the Brunette Downs Station to commence his 2-year traineeship. The employer feedback has been consistently positive, expressing their satisfaction in Jacobs work attitude and commitment to the job. Can you mold him? He is the perfect fit for our team We need more like him These are just a few of the comments that were fed back to us! Below is a comment from the Project Coordinator regarding Jacobs time from the Pastoral Real Job Program. Jacob Baker is a confident young man with a bright future within the Pastoral sector. Since becoming a participant of the Real Jobs Program where he took up a position at Brunette Downs on the Barkly Tablelands, Jacob has been nothing short of an asset to his stock camp. Jacob applies himself to every task he is given, he is a quick learner and very motivated. Every report from his Head Stockman and Overseer illustrates how happy they are with Jacob and they are very glad to have him as part of the team. Jacob continues to show improvement in his everyday tasks, and we can only hope that he chooses the path of the Agricultural Industry in the years to come. - NTCA Project Coordinator, Casey Ellis Congratulations Jacob. Wishing you only the best. Keep shining!

06.01.2022 Meet Earl White... Earl commenced the Saltbush VTEC Program in 2015 and was mostly engaged in labouring roles at the time. Although he had some barriers,... Earl always made work a priority, and served as a good role model to many of our younger Indigenous jobseekers. With the ongoing support and encouragement given to him through Saltbush Employment Services and the Karen Sheldon Group, Earl was able to find his true calling in the hospitality industry. He moved his way through washing dishes as a Kitchen Hand by day and then delivering excellent customer service at catering functions on nights and weekends. Hospitality allowed Earl to be his charismatic self, and everyone soon recognised how well he excelled in this line of work. He then took another step in his Hospitality career as he secured a place in Karen Sheldon Training’s AACE (Accelerated Aboriginal Cooks of Excellence) Program, where he has more than exceeded expectations and is well on his way to becoming a qualified chef. He is currently employed at AHL (Aboriginal Hostels Limited), receiving rave reviews from his employer. Earl is passionately enjoying his role as a cook; creating menus, doing food orders, and essentially running the kitchen! He even celebrates his food daily on social media, proudly displaying pictures of his creations, and encouraging others to pursue their professional goals. Karen Sheldon Catering Director, Amanda Swift says, Every time I asked Earl to work, he would give me 100%, if it is the kitchen or walking around serving drinks at VIP functions his personality was a shining spirit towards all the staff members. I would like to wish Earl all the very best and I am so proud of everything he has accomplished. Earl’s supervisor at AHL, Istiaq Ahmed says, Earl White has done very well at the Silas Roberts Hostel kitchen. His cooking skills and time management have improved significantly and now he can perform his duties unsupervised. He established himself in kitchen positively and worked flawlessly. Resident from Silas Roberts has enjoyed his cooking and he received good feedback too. Saltbush Social Enterprises is very proud of Earl and wish him all the best of luck on his continued journey to becoming a chef. #VTEC #ClosingtheGap #FutureStars #ShareUrStory #IndigenousEmployment #aboriginal #NAIDOC2020 AACE Program (Accelerated Aboriginal Cooks of Excellence) | Karen Sheldon Catering | Karen Sheldon Training - RTO: 70045 | Saltbush

03.01.2022 Meet Andrew Sandy Walker Andrew Sandy Walker Japandari or better known as Sandy is an Indigenous man who was born in Alice Springs, but now lives in... Darwin. Sandy was determined to turn his life around after having been in four rehabilitation facilities. Sandy joined the Darwin Saltbush Employment Services VTEC Program where he met with his mentor Katrina, and soon after Sandy gained a casual position at TeamHEALTH as a Wellbeing Worker in May of 2020. When Sandy first started at TeamHEALTH, he had to overcome a lot of obstacles. He had very low language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills, and he did not know a thing about computers, tablets or phones. Due to these barriers, TeamHEALTH enrolled Sandy into a Foundation Skills Course at CDU. Since enrolling, Sandy now considers himself an expert with new age technology and since the completion of his course Sandy’s employers also saw a massive improvement in his abilities. So in August of 2020, Sandy was offered a permanent full-time position at TeamHEALTH! Robyn from TeamHEALTH had this feedback on Sandy: Sandy has a fabulous approach to his work at TeamHEALTH. He is very steady and consistent in his approach with participants which enables him to build good relationships. I have been so impressed with Sandy’s willingness and commitment to learn new things, particularly around the use of technology in his work. He will always ask for help if unsure and wants to be shown how to do things instead of asking you to do things for him. Sandy’s goal is to strive to empower others. Especially at his age, Sandy wants to prove that it’s never too late to turn your life around and to be the change you want to see in the world. Katrina at Saltbush Employment services always looked forward to their weekly mentoring sessions, as sandy would always do anything that was asked of him without fail! From everyone at Saltbush, you’ve done us all proud and we wish you all the best on your new path in life Sandy!
