16.01.2022 Turtle Season is here Watch out for turtle tracks on the beach! Female Loggerhead Turtles are coming ashore on or near the beach where they hatched to lay th...eir eggs. She will return to lay her eggs at intervals of 12-17 days, and her average clutch of eggs will be around 112. Incubation time varies from clutch size, temperature & humidity in the nest, with incubation times between 45-70 days. Hatchlings usually start to emerge early January, with most hatching in February through until March. The Loggerhead turtle is the worlds largest hard-shelled turtle, & is listed as endangered in Australian waters. Adult Loggerheads average weight is approx 135kg, with the biggest weighing anything up to 450kg, and measuring up to 1 metre or longer in length. They reach sexual maturity within 17-33yrs, with a lifespan of 47-67yrs Anyone who has witnessed these gorgeous creatures on the beach is truly very lucky. The female is very timid and can be distracted by Lights once she comes ashore to lay her eggs, so please be careful and let her lay her eggs in peace.. Please make sure you have your dog on a lead, and that your children give her the respect she deserves.. Woodgate has a volunteer Turtle Ranger, so if you see ANY evidence of turtles, laying eggs, any tracks, any hatchlings or any carcasses please let her know... or you can take a photo and send to her Please help save our turtles.....
