We will be showcasing three different types of honey, freshly cut honeycomb, gift packs and beeswax. Saltwater Honey Headquarters will be closed September 28 - 30. 21.01.2022 Warmer days mean honey harvests! Do you know why we don’t harvest in winter? It’s because our lovely bees keep their hives toasty warm all year, 35 degrees to be exact. So if we were to open their lid, even for a few minutes, the temperature inside their hive would drop, compromising the health of the queen and the babies. Winter on the Central Coast is short, really only June and July, so we’ll be harvesting as soon as the temperature rises above 20 degrees. In the mean time, we have a good stock of smooth, candied honey which spreads beautifully on crumpets and goes nicely in tea. 19.01.2022 At Saltwater Honey Headquarters, we’ve been busy catching swarms and increasing our bee population. Now that swarm season is almost over, it’s time to harvest again. We are open today with freshly harvested honey from Norah Head. Also available, we have creamed honey and a selection of winter candied honey from Ironbark Creek and Wyee Valley. 16.01.2022 Getting ready for swarm season! The marathon of box building has begun. These boxes are assembled, puttied, sanded, ready for 3 coats of paint and will be finished just in time for swarm season. Every spring some of the bee colonies will raise up a new queen. The old queen will take off with half the hive and start a new colony. It is the natural way of increasing bee population. Our challenge is to spot them when they go, follow them when they congregate and catch them before they find a new home. If our timing is right, we can split the hive before they swarm. Boxes, bases, lids and frames have to be ready! Saltwater Honey Headquarters is open for business every Tuesday 7:00am - 7:00pm and any other day by appointment. Come choose your favourite honey

10.01.2022 This beautiful honeybee loaded with pollen on its back legs landed on my windscreen during honey deliveries today! Does this happen often? Yes it does. I’d love to say it’s because I’m a bee whisperer but the reality is not because of that. My car usually has sticky honey someplace on it, like under the door handles or boot latch. Often when I stop somewhere for a few minutes, there will be a dozen or more bee hovering over my car attracted to the honey. It’s always nice to see a good bee population around the Central Coast. I hope this little story put a smile on your face

06.01.2022 More about swarms! As mentioned last week, bee colonies swarm. It is their natural way of increasing bee population. We thought you might enjoy seeing what happens to a swarm when we capture the queen and put her in a box. In this video, thousands of bees that were airborne all made their way to their new home entertaining through the bottom opening. If you look closely, you can see the bees marching in with speed. This phenomenon can take as little as five minutes to complete upon which the bees begin the task of building comb and setting up house. Another happy hive joined our Saltwater Honey family.
