25.01.2022 Diving into the weekend
25.01.2022 Winter Swimming Tips Tip 3 - How to warm up after swimming It is important to remember that the cooling process caused by cold water will continue for another 20-30 mins after you get out of the water. Make sure as soon as you get out you dry off and rug up with lots of warm clothes. It is also good to have a warm drink to assist with bringing your body temperature back to normal. Dont worry if you sometimes find yourself shivering - this is normal and is one way your bo...dy warms up. Some warning signs of being too cold are slurred speech, mental confusion and poor coordination. We hope our winter swimming tips have helped inspire you to get in the water this Winter. Most importantly we want you to have fun, cold water swimming is exhilarating and has many positive effects on your health. The getting in and out can be a bit fierce, but with some planning and time in the water, you can improve your body and minds tolerance to cold! 23.01.2022 Magic mornings
23.01.2022 After the wild conditions along the East Coast last week we thought we would share our top tips for swimming in choppy, big swell: - Regulate your breathing, this will help you to stay calm. Make sure you are breathing every 2 strokes. - Dive under waves deep & early and be ready to start swimming as soon as you come up. - If it is shallow enough when you dive under, hold onto the sand as a wave passes over you.... - If it is deeper when you dive under stay active and work underwater eg with a breaststroke pull to help you move forward underwater and prevent being dragged back with the wave. - As you swim back in, breathe looking behind your shoulder to check for waves breaking behind or on top of you. - If you do get dumped, or caught by a wave unexpectedly remember to stay calm. Avoid the instinct to go upright or to try touch the bottom. Waves will always push you back in. Put these skills into practice at Face The Waves this week - Wed 12-1pm, Friday new time of 6-7am and Saturday 7-8am

17.01.2022 Winter Swimming Tips 2. How to acclimatize to cold water There is no secret to acclimatising to cold water other than to swim in it as often as possible (at least once a week but preferably two or three). If you really struggle with cold water then we recommend gradually extending the length of time you are in the water. It is easier to get in the routine when the water is warmer like it is now and then keep on swimming as the temperature drops through winter.... Cold water shock response can cause an immediate loss of breathing control making you gasp and hyperventilate as well as increased heart rate and blood pressure. Repeated exposure to cold water will minimise your bodys cold water shock response. However, we dont need to worry too much as we are lucky in NSW where the winter water temp rarely drops below 16 degrees in the coldest months! Our cold water warrior is @oonabamboo who is yet to don a wetsuit this Winter! Bets on for how long she can last?
17.01.2022 Winter Swimming Tips 1. Equipment The first step when starting winter swimming is to be well equipped. If you are going to be swimming for long periods of time ie 1-hour sessions it is a good idea to get yourself a wetsuit. ... A wetsuit will add an extra layer of insulation and ensure that you dont lose as much body heat during your swim session. However, do not think wearing a wetsuit makes you invincible. As it fills with cold water, you will still experience the cold shock response. Its after this moment that the benefit kicks in the layer of water trapped between the skin and the wetsuit warms up. Wearing a swim cap (or two!) will also help you to conserve heat. If you particularly struggle with the cold you can get neoprene swim caps which will keep you extra toasty. Orca or 2xu are both high-quality wetsuits which are designed for swimming. Surfing wetsuits are also fine to use for swimming. Our year-round swimmers typically wear wetsuits from June to November so if you are committed to becoming a tough winter swimmer it is certainly a good investment. If you have any questions about winter swim gear let us know and stay tuned for more winter swimming tips.

14.01.2022 Spring is in the air! As the air temps begin to rise, dont be fooled into thinking water temps will be warming up as well - expect the water to stay pretty chilly throughout Sep & Oct. Luckily the mornings are getting brighter making those early morning swims more inviting. Hats off to @oonabamboo who has made it through winter swimming 1 hour-long sessions without her wetsuit - now she just needs to get through September & October!

13.01.2022 Starting the day right with a swim We are extremely lucky to have so many great swim spots in Sydney. Where is your favourite swim spot?
13.01.2022 How to adapt your stroke to swim in the ocean . Tip 4 - Recovery (when your arm comes out and over the water) We encourage our swimmers to swim with straight arms. Straight arms allow you to recover your arm within the shoulders natural range of movement, supports the shoulder girdle and leads to a stronger and longer stroke. ... Bringing a straight arm recovery into your ocean swimming will also help to ensure that your hand and arm are high above the water. This ensures when you are swimming in bumpy and choppy conditions that you hand clears the water the whole way on your recovery.
13.01.2022 Its been a another stunning week of winter swimming in Sydney - crystal clear water, super flat conditions and water still warmish with a couple of brave swimmers still going without wetsuit!
