18.01.2022 Many Yoga asanas require the idea of lifting or being light in the pose. When I'm teaching a yoga class I'll often use phrases "gather the Earth", "create space between each vertebrae", "find new height". I sometimes like to use the analogy of picking up a tissue from the ground, say in Warrior II, but only with your feet. There becomes an underlying activation and added support to hold and lift and grow tall to the sky. Gather the Earth. Find new height. Anahatasana, or pu...ppy pose is the perfect example to illustrate the importance of activation in a pose. Here you must draw everything into the centre, hugging the mat with the palms and knees, drawing the shoulders into its sockets, encouraging hip tilt, activating the core and perineum, hugging the chin to the chest as though your holding an orange. Everything is active. Everything is contained all the while you breathe to find peace in the pose. In this pose you become the tissue being picked up from the ground. Gather the Earth. Find new height.

05.01.2022 Yoga means something different for many of us. A time to be yourself, to be still in the present, willpower, meditate, calmness, breath work; this wonderful list is endless. It's also a chance to explore. Feel free to explore a pose within your physical limits. What would happen if you leaned slightly forward towards one leg in Upavista Konasana, if you turned my head slightly in Sphinx, if you rocked gently from side to side in easy/reclined pigeon or Uttanasana, if you brought your hands to prayer or cactus arms in Warrior I. Give yourself permission to explore. And don't forget to smile in the process.

03.01.2022 One of the most fragile and neglected parts of the body are our wrists. And to think how often they are used, particularly with an asana practice that includes any weight bearing pose on our hands, it becomes even more important to warm up and protect the wrists. One warm-up exercise is to intertwine the fingers together into one big fist, having the forearms closely together and draw an infinity symbol or figure 8 with your knuckles, allowing the elbows to side upand down ...accordingly, then change direction, and repeating it all with the other thumb infront. For wrists that are already fragile, try doing Bidalasana on your fists as a variation; have elevated wrists resting on a raised blanket or rolled up mat in Adho Mukha Svanasana. Also try squeezing the palms together in the above 2 poses, and any other weighted arm pose, this will encourage strength toward the inner arms and will add more weight under the ball of thumb and index fingers.
