Keep See more
24.01.2022 We can go watch a game of footy and other sports, but we cannot go and watch inter- high cross country, i might try and hire a helicopter. Keep
24.01.2022 Some more photos from out on the course today. A coach is only as good as the great team that they have around them , I am so lucky to have a great group of young kids that all train so well together and to my beautiful partner Sharlene for all of her support which makes my role so much easier. Keep up the great work Strider team.
23.01.2022 Declan Cahill with proud coach Salty after winning the Maiden 100m event at the Hobart Bikes and Spikes carnival today. Congratulations Declan and Leon
23.01.2022 Charli Davis on her way to winning G 8 girls today, great run.
23.01.2022 Starting in mid October the Striders training locations will change , it will be something like this , 2 days a week at Hellyer College, 2 days a week at West Park and 1 day a week we will hit the synthetic at Penguin. The training times will not alter , but as it gets closer i will advise as to what days we are at these locations. Keep and enjoy your training.
23.01.2022 Usain Plapp has just won the 400mtrs in record time and Chloe Bates has also continued on from yesterday’s brilliant effort and won the 200 and 400mtrs giving her the 100,200,400,800 and 1500mtrs, you can both now have a couple of days off training .Keep
23.01.2022 Over the years of being involved at the Coastal Carnivals, through competing and now coaching I would have to say Devonports Nicole Perry ( coached by Mike Gunson) would have to be one of the most consistent athletes that i have seen. Nicole has won some good races over the years and has always ran off some tough marks , but every year she consistently runs good times and is always well prepared. Today at Penguin she ran a huge race to finish 2nd over 400mtrs and by what i di...d see she is getting back to some good form. The way she prepares, her consistency , friendly and easy going attitude makes her a fantastic role model for any young athlete that is just starting out in this great sport of athletics. I reckon Nicole has got another big win left in her, and what a brilliant coach she would make if ever she decides to give this gig a go. See more
23.01.2022 Tarj Singleton in red, senior 400m final
23.01.2022 Yesterday we had 3 new young athletes join our group, they will train with us one day a week working on form and technique, we would like to welcome Ellie, Indigo and Bailey to the Strider team, we hope you all enjoy your training, but most of all have some fun.
22.01.2022 In any team or training squad , it is always good to have that someone who gives the group a laugh and makes new members feel welcome. Today it was Chloe Bates who after training in the Burnie Park decided to entertain the group by doing cart wheels and hand stands, i reckon you should look for a gig at the circus legend. All that gym work is paying off CB.
22.01.2022 All the best to all the Striders playing in Grand Finals this weekend in football and basketball, enjoy your time and have some fun, it sure is a great time of the year, with the track season just around the corner.
22.01.2022 Strider Abby Henderson has run a big race to finish 3rd in the 1000mtrs at Rosebery , great work Abs.
22.01.2022 Declan Cahill winning yesterday’s 100mtre Maiden at Hobart ,our first win for Team Striders at the Carnival series. We are all proud of you DC , a fine young man who only joined us a few months ago, soccer is his go, but he has come on so quickly , taking to this running game like a fish to water , our journey is just starting DC, keep up the great work.
22.01.2022 On Friday afternoon i was lucky enough to be able to sit down and have a listen to a talk given by South Australian high performance athletics coach for Athletics Australia Adam Didyk on all things athletics and coaching. Adam has coached Jess Trengove and many other high quality athletes and everything he speaks about is so on the money, he covers a great range of topics . Thanks to Athletics Tasmania for making this available.
21.01.2022 Be great if we could have this bloke in Tassie at Christmas , he is flying.
21.01.2022 Chloe Bates, on her way to victory in the G 10 girls, well done CB
21.01.2022 Our youngest Strider Max Redman in the front with Samuel Plapp(left)Chloe Bates(middle) and Abby Henderson( right) Max also plays basketball and soccer, Abby plays hockey, Chloe plays netball and Samuel also plays basketball, they all use athletics as a great way to keep fit over the winter and summer months.
21.01.2022 Thanks to all the Striders and their families for their support tonight coming along to our Christmas dinner. There must have been sixty or more people there, fantastic turnout thank you. Thanks again for all the gifts, each one is very much appreciated. Thanks to Rachel for all her organisation of the dinner tonight, great work legend. Thanks also to our sponsors over the last two years for helping us look like a professional outfit . From CEO Salty and his admin team xx
21.01.2022 Pirri Barnes in white, 400m junior final
20.01.2022 This had to go up Tarj Singleton, what a day the Striders had at West Park on New Years Eve, i will cherish this day forever. Thanks everyone for all of the support, my beautiful partner Sharlene for all the work that she does behind the scenes and to all the parents for getting the kids to and from training and to the carnivals. Even this year was a massive learning curve for me as not only did we have Nu-Gen athletes taking part we also had 6 athletes commence at the coastal carnivals ( seniors)so from Hobart through to the Burnie carnival it was full on, but what a fantastic experience it has been. Let the show continue in 2021.
20.01.2022 Big congratulations to Strider Pirri Barnes in pink who took out the senior Nu Gen 400m at Burnie with a strong finish . Sorry this took a while to post as I couldn’t get the sound to work.
19.01.2022 Dedication and Committment are the 2 main ingredients you must have if you want to be successful at any sport, you dont buy it at the supermarket and it does not come in a weetbix box, as an athlete it is something you must have. You can have the latest Garmin, and million dollar shoes , but if you dont have the 2 main ingredients, it is game over. Keep
19.01.2022 The g10 boys race was a big one, Tyler Innes 1st, Campbell Palmer 2nd, Campbell might have to give the bike riding up.
19.01.2022 In the late 70s early 80s i started my running journey at the Coastal Carnivals and what a great time it was, it was made possible by having the support of good coaches, fantastic athletes to train with and great support from my parents. Training for the track would commence in early September( 6 days a week) , racing would start mid November and end up around March or April, depending on when Stawell was on. We trained on the grounds of Parklands High School, that was our ba...se for 6 months of the year and what a fun time of my life, even to this day when i drive up past Parklands High School, all those great memories come flooding back, and that big hill up the side of the school still gives me nightmares just thinking about all those reps we used to do from the bottom to the top, some nights after training all i would do was get home eat tea and off to bed, i was done, but i would have to say my coach had me in the best shape of my life. Next weekend as another part of my journey in athletics, this time through coaching 6 of our young Striders will commence a journey through the Coastal Carnivals, if you think i am excited , you would be on the money. My aim is to make this journey for these young athletes as good as the one that i had for 10,12 years competing at the Carnivals. After a couple of years at the Carnivals with these young athletes my aim is take a group to Stawell one year ( the home of athletics) for another experience that they will never forget, once you have been to that great place you just want to keep going back until you hit the jackpot. Happy Running. See more
19.01.2022 If you are into athletics get a copy of this, 400 mtre racing is a tough gig, but she made it look easy, at her best no one got near her. They dont give away Olympic gold medals you have to earn them, Keep Punching.
18.01.2022 I ran into these guys at the Hobart athletics carnival last year( refer email below that i received last night) They came down to Tassie from Brisbane for a holiday , the young daughter trains with a big squad of athletes up that way,she is a very talented sprinter. After catching up with them when the nu gen series was over in Burnie , they told me how much they enjoyed the athletics over the Christmas break and they would be coming back, I told them to hit up the Striders ...when you come back you be more than welcome , they are great people. This can work both ways , you never know when one of our Strider athletes is in Brisbane they could join in with this young kids group of athletes for some training sessions , everyone is a winner . Coaching at times can be a full on gig , but always so rewarding , if you always make people feel welcome they will keep coming back. See more
18.01.2022 Never give up in a race, anything can happen if you just keep working.
16.01.2022 Can anyone tell me if any G10 female athlete at Burnie High School has ever at the Athletics Carnival, won the 100, 200,400,800 and 1500mtrs, plus also winning the school cross country during winter, Something SPECIAL may happen this afternoon at Burnie High .
15.01.2022 Back in 2017 when i started up Saltys Striders one young athlete came along to one of our first sessions, and she continued to train with us when it fitted in with her main sport which was hockey. She is very handy with the hockey stick and has been away in state teams and has played the game for a long time. Last year she was telling me how she was keen to give football a go, I urged her to give it a try telling her she had nothing to lose, i just knew that if she applied th...e same level of dedication to her footy as she did hockey she might surprise herself.( sometimes a change is as good as a holiday) This young athlete has been working hard at training since last November learning about her new sport and honing her skills, waiting for the season to finally start, last weekend in her first game she was best on ground and her team Wynyard got a win and yesterday she kicked her first goal and another victory over Latrobe. Yesterday i ran into her at the footy and she was telling me all about her new sport and how much she enjoys it, she was not moving to well after playing early yesterday morning. Make sure you hit that cold water this morning Charlie Vandenberg for recovery, and keep up the great work ledge , all the best to your team for the rest of the season. Aim for the sky CV, you never know what this new journey may bring, enjoy. See more
15.01.2022 Last night i had a conversation with another well known coach here on the coast regarding the Novice marks that are used at the Coastal Carnivals , this coach has plenty of athletes competing at the carnivals and i will have 5 young athletes that will start this season. We both agreed that the use of novice marks needs to be reviewed where we have documented times from athletes that have competed at school and club events, maybe the novice mark is only given to an athlete that the handicapper has no documented time on, the rest are handicapped of pbs that have been submitted by the athlete. It is always the responsibility of the athlete and coach to advise the handicapper of a new PB as soon as possible. Happy Running .
15.01.2022 Great running in the Nu Gen events at the Devonport Carnival today. The Striders had success first up with Pirri Barnes winning the Junior girls 100m final and many others who ran very well to make finals. Hard luck for Samuel Plapp, Cougar Beamish and Abby Henderson who just missed making finals in tight finishes. Pirris the back marker in this video, in red.
15.01.2022 The best run I have ever seen at Stawell, she just went bang.
15.01.2022 Young Strider Bryce Dunham has been with us from about day one , he was at Burnie Primary and this year he starts year 7 at Burnie High School. He has now got a mobile phone , so yesterday i thought i would try and catch him out and give him a call thinking he would not know who it was( I got his number off his older sister Macey) So yesterday when he answered the phone , i say is that the fastest runner at Burnie Primary, as quick as a flash he goes no i am now the fastest r...unner at Burnie High School. This kid is a gem , last year he turns up to training with a new fit bit and is so excited to tell me all about it , then prior to that on another night he rocks up to training with some new starting blocks that his pop got for him, fair dinkum these blocks are about as tall as this pocket rocket . He is a great young kid that just loves his athletics and can’t wait to tell me all about it when he arrives at training on a Monday night. Keep up the great work rocket , we all admire you at Strider Land. See more
14.01.2022 Great work Jake Dixon, i have found you another gig.
14.01.2022 The Striders would like to welcome young athletes Tora & Chance Carpenter, Nash Hammond, Priya Jarman and Ashlyn Moles to the Strider team , we hope you all enjoy your time with the Strider Team and have a heap of fun along the way.
14.01.2022 All sporting clubs at the elite level spend plenty of money on coaches, assistant coaches, physios and strength and conditioning coaches. I only hope that a similar amount of money is also spent on the health and well- being of our athletes. As a coach you spend a lot of time with your athletes, and you should never be afraid to ask your athlete R U OK.
13.01.2022 This ground here at New town has brought me great memories over the years , in 1985 i won the mile off 75 mtrs, then 3 months later went on and won the big 3200mtrs at Stawell, today Declan Cahill won his first race and Abby Henderson ran 3rd in the 800mtrs at this ground, great work legends , our journey is just starting.
13.01.2022 Much to my surprise the crew presented me with a cake, vouchers and goodies at training tonight, for my birthday, which is tomorrow , it is so much appreciated. I never expect anything for what i do, coaching is just my way of giving something back to a sport that gave me so much, i am just so lucky to have a fantastic group of young, dedicated athletes that make my role so enjoyable. The way you all enjoy your training and support each other, on and off the track is first class, keep up the great work team. Keep Punching.
13.01.2022 Some athletes talk to me about heart rate, maximum heart rate and minimum heart rate, the only rate that i am really interested in is your WORK RATE. Keep Punching.
13.01.2022 Everyone at the Striders would like to wish one of our original members Charlie Vandenberg a Happy 18th Birthday, have a great day Legend , enjoy the day with your family and friends. You have come a long way C since starting with us 4 years ago at our sessions in the Burnie Park. You are a such a bonus to the Strider group, with your dedication, wit, humour and most of all by just being CV. Keep up the great work CV.
12.01.2022 Things are starting to heat up around the carnival scene. Can a local stop McSweyn from winning another Burnie Mile.
11.01.2022 Do yourself a favour and watch all of this, for any young track athlete if this does not motivate you, then nothing will, Freeman was a gem on and off the track, the pressure that was on her in the lead up was crazy, i cant even try to imagine her mindset as she walked towards those starting blocks just waiting for that race to start.
11.01.2022 Everyone at the Striders would like to wish the rocket Tarj Singleton a Happy Birthday, have a great day mate, enjoy the day with family and friends. After school finishes today you can become a full time athlete for 3 months ledge.
11.01.2022 Bring on the Carnivals.
11.01.2022 Bryce Dunham in white, 100m junior final
10.01.2022 Hey Striders. Please note: Outside of our normal training days, you CANNOT just roll up and train at West Park, you need to get permission , otherwise i get a phone call for a please explain. keep
10.01.2022 What a great photo in the local paper today of the finish of yesterday’s 400mtre final at Penguin, Striders Tarj Singleton (yellow) and Chloe Bates (grey) second from the right, all charging towards the line.
10.01.2022 Attention all carnival athletes. Entries are now open for the Penguin Carnival on Tuesday 29th December. Enter via the TAL website. Carnival time , Christmas time and holiday time, it don’t get much better .
09.01.2022 A big shoutout to this great local company, 2B Build for the support they give the Striders, along with our other 2 sponsors , Cooee Bodyworks and MA & LJ Bates Plumbing & Bathrooms, your support is so much appreciated.
09.01.2022 Sometimes as an athlete you can do all the training and hard work and the rewards seem like they will never come, but trust me ,if you are consistent and dedicated to your training they will come. Yesterday we hit Penguin for an afternoon training session and a couple of our young athletes had a trial over a couple of different distances, both these athletes have trained the house down since March, and i had a feeling they would both go very quick by what i have seen them do at training at Hellyer College. After the trial yesterday I had to pick them both up off the track, one said he could not feel his legs, but when i showed both of them the times that pain soon went. Hard work always pays off, all we need to do now legends is convert that trial time into race time when the heat comes on us. Keep legends.
09.01.2022 Some big runs on day one at the Burnie High School Athletics Carnival today. Cougar Beamish winning G 8 boys 100mtre in 12 seconds breaking the record which had been around since 1993. Chloe Bates winning G10 girls 100& 800 mtrs Charli Davis winning G 8 girls 800mtrs Samuel Plapp winning G 8 boys 800mtrs.... Tyler Innes winning G 10 boys 800mtrs. Great work by all involved with getting everything organised, i know staff and teachers hit the school early this morning to get the ground set up. See more
08.01.2022 Later in the year former Coastal Carnival sprinter Emma Marshall-Eustace will join us, and take on a role of guiding and mentoring one of our young female sprinters as she starts her sprinting journey. Emma won 2 Burnie and Devonport Gifts and every other race on the carnival scene in the mid 90s, she prepared and raced as well as any athlete that I have seen on the carnival circuit. Thanks so much Emma for giving up some of your time to help out this young sprinter.
08.01.2022 Our new hoodies have arrived, they look great. A big shout out to our sponsors COOEE BODYWORKS 2B BUILD MA&LJ BATES PLUMBING& BATHROOMS.... Your support is so much appreciated and great work by Todd Rogers Signs. See more
07.01.2022 Samuel Plapp, has gone bang winning the G 8 boys 200mtrs in a record time of 25.12, a record that had been around since 1979.
07.01.2022 Four years ago when i started up Saltys Striders one young athlete came along to one of our first training sessions, and over the years she continued to train with us when it fitted in with her main sport which was hockey ,and it was only a couple of weeks ago she came up for a session on Monday night to catch up and have a chat. From day one it did not take me long to realise that this kid enjoyed training and keeping herself fit, she is one of the most easy going and coacha...ble athletes that i have seen. Last year she was telling me she was thinking about giving footy a go, at the time I could tell she needed a change, ( she had been playing hockey a long time)so i suggested she give the footy a go, you have nothing to lose, i just knew that if she applied herself to footy like she had done for years to her hockey she would go ok. Well the rest is history this weekend this young athlete gets a chance to play in a Grand Final for the Wynyard football Club, she has taken to her new sport like a fish takes to water. Keep up the great work Charlie Vandenberg, everyone at Strider Land wishes you all the best for this weekend in the grand final. Remember these 3 things when you hit the ground on Sunday. Keep Take em to the cleaners Give it your best shot. See more
06.01.2022 Strider Chloe Bates (blue) running to the line in the 300mtre final at West Park on Sunday, Chloe finished 2nd , former Burnie Gift winner Kiani Allen(red) won the race off the backmark. Action heats up at Rosebery on Saturday with more carnival action.
06.01.2022 Thanks Brian, great work.
06.01.2022 Thanks Jack Hale , appreciate, Abs day is complete.
06.01.2022 These photos say it all, Samuel Plapp hitting the line and winning the 120mtre and his partner in crime Tarj Singleton winning the 400mtrs.
06.01.2022 Hey Team. Training starts back up this Monday 4th January @ 4pm at West Park , the Striders show starts back up for 2021.
06.01.2022 Our 2 little pocket rockets after training tonight, fantastic young kids, keep up the great work.
06.01.2022 Back in 2005 as part of my early coaching journey i had the chance to do some work with the Tasmanian Devils Football team, at that time they played in a very strong VFL competition and it gave me my first opportunity to coach in a team environment, it was a great learning curve for me. Down below is some old training notes I found , this is the first 2 weeks of a month block of training that we used early on in the pre- season( Nov) one year. This is just the running component of the program, on top of this they had early morning gym sessions and skill sessions in the afternoon. This team was in good shape in 2005, 2006, and remember they all worked full time . As a coach if you ever get an opportunity to work in a sport which takes you out of your comfort zone, give it a go, it a great way to learn more.
06.01.2022 Great work by Striders , Abby, Chloe, Samuel, James and Tarj on getting selected in the Tasmanian ( Virtual) All Schools track and field state team, well done.
05.01.2022 It is always good when one of our athletes gives me a call to say they have run a pb. This afternoon at inter-club, in the 800mtrs James Frankcombe ran 2.10.98, his pb was 2.18, a massive improvement , well done JF, great work. James along with some other athletes worked very hard over the winter months, on the track and off the track in the gym. As i have said before legends, if you are prepared to do the work and have some patience the rewards will come. * All the best to all our young Striders who are doing the 321 Go tomorrow, enjoy the day and have some fun.
04.01.2022 Jono Cahill, look great at Hellyer College.
03.01.2022 Thanks Striders, we will enjoy this tonight
03.01.2022 It was a great run on Thursday by Victorian athlete Aaron Leferink to win the Burnie Gift, well done, but don’t forget it was also a massive run by local boy Jordan Maynard to finish 2nd , this kid was not far away , a brilliant effort in only his 2nd year of carnival running. I am not sure who coaches this young kid, but well done, keep your chin up young fella, sometimes in sport you have to lose a big gig before you go on and win one, your time in the sun will come, keep up the great work.
03.01.2022 Perfect conditions for a training session at Penguin this afternoon
03.01.2022 Everyone at the Striders would like to wish Chloe and Riley a Happy Birthday, hope you both have a fantastic day. Both you guys along with our other Strider athletes form part of a great Strider Team.
02.01.2022 The 2 Amigos went bang, nothing between them at the end, they ran 1st and 2nd today at the BHS cross country. More photos to come later.
01.01.2022 Declan Cahill has just picked up his first win in the maiden 100mtrs at Hobart, a great run young fella, he has now become the first Strider to win a race at the Carnival series, you legend DC.
01.01.2022 Perfect conditions, here at Rosebery
01.01.2022 You have made the big time Riley boy.
01.01.2022 Great work yesterday by Strider Abby Henderson in being the first female home in the mile and 2nd overall in the mixed field. Great work Abs what a fantastic first year of carnival running you have had , running places in the 800, 1000 and now the 1600mtrs. We have a big winter planned then hit this carnival action again , keep up the great work ledge.
