18.01.2022 Hints for Summer: - mulch your Salvias well with sugarcane mulch (easy to place around small plants and attracts worms. Place an aqua hose through the bed, which still works when covered by mulch. It is more environmentally acceptable than spray irrigation) - dead head the flowers (trim/ clip 1/4 of plant to keep the plant looking good and to encourage more flowers) - place greggii/microphyllas and any grey leaf Salvias in full sun, don't place in shade, they go very leggy... easily - at the end of Summer all small leaf Salvias will need a proper cut back as they will be looking daggy and leggy. Cut back to a new shoot or green leaf bud - (1/2 or 3/4 to promote good new growth and flowers for winter) - for large leaf Salvias, leave alone until they have flowered. (visit the pruning page on the website for instructions of how to prune what varieties) WHAT IS FLOWERING NOW? - greggii/microphyllas (in full flower no matter the colour) - S.flocculosa - most of the coccinea varieties - chlapensis - magenta magic - waverly - phyllis fancy - canariensis varieties - muril - celestial blue - allen chickering - sclarea - desoleana - most herbaceous varieties - rhinosina - miniata - amistad AND MANY MORE!! Visit the 'What's Flowering' page on the website. Many varieties have such a long flowering period, that those varieties seem to appear every season.
