23.01.2022 Periods, monthlies, on the rag, girl flu, that time of the month, red tide, moon time, a visit from Auntie Flo... So many different names for one thing that most every woman will experience at some point during her lifetime. That’s right, menstruation! I’ve never heard anyone say it’s their favourite time of the month, but it’s certainly easier for some than others. If you sail smoothly from month to month with nary a cramp to be seen, you are one of the lucky few, and I am s...Continue reading

22.01.2022 Do you (or your kids) struggle with constant colds in winter? Have a read of this... In Chinese medicine theory, the lungs are the major organ responsible for maintaining immune function. As the lungs have a direct connection with the external environment (nose and mouth), they can easily and quickly become overwhelmed by airborne microorganisms and climatic pathogenic factors. The lung’s susceptibility or strength to resist an acute pathogen depends on the strength of the bo...dy’s defence system, called wei qi in Chinese medicine, which is governed and controlled by the lungs. Defence qi or wei qi acts like a barrier against external bioclimatic or pathogenic factors, which should not be able to damage the lung network if the wei qi is strong enough. A key factor in strengthening the lungs and digestive system is through the diet. Colds, flu and bronchitis that frequently occur during the colder months, may be prevented through preventative strengthening of lung qi with a warming diet- focused on acridwarm flavours; and by supporting the digestive system- which is known as the centre burner or middle jiao in Chinese medicine. Correct diet combined with sufficient physical activity or exercise in fresh air should be able to prevent or minimise recurrent colds and reduce the need for antibiotics. Children are especially vulnerable to changes in dietary habits, and great care should be take to ensure their diet supports good health. Ideally children should be fed a diet of cooked, warm, nutritious and easily digested foods, such as soups, broths, and stew during the winter months, or when unwell. Too many cold foods and drinks easily damage the function of the digestive organ systems, especially in young children, whose digestive system has yet to completely mature (this occurs around the age of 6). Cold foods include raw foods, foods with a cold nature, and foods which are served straight from the refrigerator or freezer. Chinese medicine techniques such as acupuncture and massage are suitable for children. To learn more, or to make an appointment, please get in touch!
