23.01.2022 What does it mean to be an ally to people of colour? Why is it important to remove blackface from our streaming services? And what can the creative sector do to advance racial equity? You can find the answers in the Creative Equity Toolkit, which was launched in July, and provides an action-oriented approach to increasing cultural diversity in the arts.

23.01.2022 We are pulling the final pieces together for the next SAMAG webinar, so put 28th September in your diary now, with tickets available at the end of this week! Finding resilience in the arts in a time of uncertainty. When everything feels uncertain, how do we maintain hope and resilience? How can we use our creative habits and resources to develop positive mental health practices? How can we stop feeling so overwhelmed and get back our energy, focus and productivity even whe...n the future is undefined? Whether it is a pandemic, embarking on a new artistic venture, or the loss of an income, inspiration, resilience, and hope is something we can always seek and even thrive on during uncertain times. With the help of a panel of psychologists and artists working in the area of mental health, SAMAG will discuss the ways the COVID-19 pandemic has affected artists and the arts industries on a mental health level, guide us through how we can best look after ourselves and others, and how we can be resilient and hopeful during this unusual global time. Well specifically address issues like where to find support as someone working in the arts, how to develop supportive mental health practices and strategies for coping no matter your circumstances.

18.01.2022 SAMAG is looking for new committee members to join our volunteer committee, if you are an arts worker, practitioner, or work with a cultural institution we would love to hear from you. We value diversity and inclusivity and currently meet online once a month. Our values reflect our strengths and collective motivations for being part of SAMAG. We wish to see our audiences reflect these values in how they engage with others at SAMAG events and in an online discussion. These va...lues got us to where we are today and with continued application, will help us achieve our future aspirations. Aspirational: We believe in the power of the arts and the individual and the collective impact it has on us all. We have high hopes for its future as well as our role within it. To this end, we look to challenge big issues, spark conversation and give ideas a platform. Collaborative: We share ideas openly and accessibly to provide the best opportunity for good ideas and good people to succeed. Inclusive: We positively support and make connections across art forms and seek to broaden the sector by focussing on ideas that build, grow and bring out the best in us. We consider the value we can bring to all audiences, including those not in the room. Committed: Weve been around for 25 years. When we start something, we stick with it. Weve leaned in during tough times and continue to be passionate believers in the value of the arts. Nimble: We are a small organisation that punches above our weight, seeking to be responsive to the arts sector as new needs, opportunities and challenges arise. Formed in 1992, SAMAG started as a group of business people who wanted to contribute their skills to support practicing artists by offering practical seminars. We have evolved over 25 years to serve the arts sector in all its forms and support all those who work in it, from practicing artists to arts managers and Executive leadership. SAMAG is run by a volunteer committee that is supported by a part-time Coordinator. Reach out to our coordinator by email: [email protected]

09.01.2022 Art schools in Australia are facing an existential threat. Decades of inadequate funding have left many of them in a perilous state. And the present political and intellectual hostility to the creative arts from some federal and state governments is threatening their very existence. Some art schools have thrived within their tertiary host institutions, but many have not.

05.01.2022 There was a time when artists imagined and planned work for 2020. For some, years had gone into the planning. But, as we know, everything scheduled from the middle of March had to be cancelled. Some events may be scheduled again at another time; many will no longer happen. A group of artists have put together a map of the abandoned artistic projects for 2020. Conceived by artist Anna Tregloan and named The Impossible Project, it is a treasury of lost work and a time capsule of what we missed out on this year due to the pandemic.

04.01.2022 Meet our panelist from The upcoming SAMAG webinar Racism in the arts reform or revolution? Rosie Lourde A #storyteller with a passion for #community who loves digging into the heart of a narrative and finding how it ultimately encourages human connection. Her first love is performing. As a kid I was always dancing and acting, and as an adult, became professionally trained at both. Very quickly, however, I became frustrated at the limited roles and opportunities in both f...ields so I turned my attention to generating my own projects. I stepped into #producing in early 2013 and now Im focusing on #writing & #directing particularly in immersive media. The irony isnt lost on me that while my drive is to encourage community Ive been drawn to what is currently one of the most isolated means of storytelling. I believe, however, that the various mechanisms of immersion change our capacity to tell stories on the screen they have the potential to magnify the emotional resonance of a story and, hopefully, deepen peoples #connections both inside and out of the experiences. And if you haven't caught her web film series Starting From Now you don't know what you're are missing. 03.01.2022 First published in 2019, and in response to a @SAMAG panel discussion by sector leaders, the consensus of the day was that the greatest hurdle remains with recognising the shift needed from disability access and awareness to disability-led and employment. As the next in our 20x20 series, which looks back at the cultural milestones and trending topics that have shaped the arts, we shine a light on the conversations and policymaking around disability arts and access to coincide with this International Day for People with Disability (3 December).
