22.01.2022 Okay so I’m sure your social media feeds are filled with yellow tiles accompanied by the words ‘R U OK?’ Although it may seem repetitive, take a second to think about how many times someone needs to ask you how you’re feeling before you’re totally honest with them? R U OK? ... Yeah, I’m fine. Are you sure? Yeah dude, I’m good. Okay, you just seem a little off today, you know you can talk to me anytime, right? Thanks, appreciate it. Okay, so not a particularly groundbreaking conversation, but pretty realistic stuff right? Chances are, initially people aren’t going to be totally upfront and honest with you. When asking R U Ok? remember to create a safe space where people can feel comfortable talking to you either in the moment or at another time. There are a heap of resources out there, check out the RUOK website and always remember, we’re here for you in any way we can be.
21.01.2022 This is how we do it at conferences now. No more face to face, sitting in my lounge room watching the #20adc. Learnt heaps about virtual health and the #770g today. And got to see @hangrypancreas
20.01.2022 There are so many Magical moments in my work. This gorgeous girl wanted me to have her necklace. I told her I was honoured, but would only wear it overnight as it was a gift from her mother. What a privilege to work with people in an amazing team. What an honour to help to improve the lived experience of a child living with diabetes. #t1dlife #thankful #insulinpump
20.01.2022 Over the next decade, more than half a million Aussie mums are expected to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. But what's actually causing this? There are a bunch of reasons for this: Australia's increasing diversity, the age of women falling pregnant, and lifestyle factors. Whilst some of these factors can't be controlled, there are still some ways to reduce the risk of developing GDM.... Diabetes Australia has worked with key stakeholders to develop a robust Position Statement outlining key issues surrounding GDM and what needs to be done. Check it out here: https://static.diabetesaustralia.com.au//d19303da-e42c-49a
20.01.2022 What happens when you ask and genuinely listen? What happens when your clinic visit becomes your creative space? What happens when glitter, giant eyeballs and orange paint come before your HbA1c? MAGIC.... I was lucky enough to help Diabetes Advocacy Group Tasmania (DAGTas) get this project off the ground. Thanks to our sponsors Department Of Health and Human Services, Diabetes Tasmania, the W.D. Booth Charitable Trust and the Bill Beattie Memorial donators. Thanks also to Stacey and Simon Baker at the The Bakery Media Production for their amazing work.

17.01.2022 Today we celebrate World Diabetes Day. . This year’s theme, ‘Nurses make the difference’, has made MyDiabetes Managing Director, Sam reflect on her time as a nurse and all the special and emotional experiences she’s been present for and felt herself. . We asked Sam to share her reflections today:... . This world diabetes day, I’ve really reflected on the people living with diabetes that I know and have worked with. . This picture was taken in 2014 and is one of my favourites. It speaks of the LIVED experience of diabetes. These kids aren’t kids anymore, so much has happened. . One kid decided to travel and live in Brazil for a year and is now 6 foot 2; . Another went through the process of gender transition, made a family and bought a home; . Another is now an engineer; and . Sadly, one beautiful soul has passed. . As a Diabetes Nurse Educator, I don’t just move with people and their lived experience of diabetes, it’s a whole life journey with unforeseen twists and turns. I genuinely see it as privilege to not only be witness to, but to be part of people’s lives. . Happy World Diabetes Day everyone, let’s reflect on the incredible nurses in our lives. See more

14.01.2022 Pumpalicious! Okay, so there's nothing particularly delicious about an insulin pump, however, it can defs make managing your diabetes considerably easier! But with so many options out there, coupled with rapidly changing technology, it can be confusing and confronting - firstly deciding on whether to go down the pump path and then of course choosing the right one for you. ... I'm sure you've heard pumps are great, but what actually makes them so great? Pumps can: - Automatically adjust your basal background insulin every 5 minutes based on your CGM readings. - Help keep your sugar levels in your target range to avoid - those pesky lows and rebound highs. - Conveniently restart insulin automatically when your levels recover without the annoying alerts. For a little more info, check out this simple video that outlines the awesome new tech that many new pumps are starting to use. We recognize there is no silver bullet for this stuff, as everyone has different needs. At MyDiabetes, our goal is to provide tailored diabetes care and management that removes all the confusion and fuss that often comes with managing your diabetes. Check-in with Sam to discuss all things pumps, today! www.youtube.com/watch

13.01.2022 Do you have a teenager in your life living with diabetes? Last Wednesday, the world celebrated Teenager Workout Day! Didn't get the memo? Don't worry, neither did we. Teenager Workout Day... Sounds a bit odd, right? Well, according to a recent study, 9 in 10 Aussie teens don't get enough exercise.... Exercise is important for everyone, but especially for those living with diabetes as it helps: Insulin to work better; ultimately improving your diabetes management; maintain a healthy weight; lower your blood pressure; reduce your risk of heart disease; and reduce stress. 13.01.2022 The beautiful Elayna. When she was two years old she was diagnosed with #t1d and she started on a insulin pump before she left the hospital. Four years later she upgraded to the #640g with #plgs and mum and dad slept better. This week I’ve had the privilege to start Miss E on her third pump, the #670g . This afternoon she switched to auto mode and is now a #hybrid #closedloopsystem cyborg girl.... #medtronic #medtronicdiabetes
12.01.2022 According to a study published in Pediatrics Diabetes, children with Type 1 diabetes who received ongoing psychological support saw a decrease in severe hypoglycemic episodes and stable glycemic control. Have a read of the article here.
10.01.2022 Diabetes Australia is one of Australia’s leading funders of diabetes research. Earlier this month, DA announced the funding for 13 diabetes research projects across a broad spectrum. One recent ground-breaking study has found a super cool protein in a kidney cell that could be involved in the ‘signaling’ process that leads to kidney scarring in people with diabetes.... The hope is that blocking this special protein could prevent kidney damage in the first place, and help to prevent kidney disease altogether! Other studies include: - Improving pregnancy outcomes for women with type 1 diabetes - The improved use of technology in children with type 1 diabetes - The impact of low kilojoule diets on type 2 diabetes management - Using physical activity to treat diabetes-related liver disease Check out the awesome full range of research programs being funded! www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/diabetes-australia-research-pr
10.01.2022 This is so true, we are all in this together! But I know for some, it may not always seem that way. Remember, I’m only a call or a message away - whether it’s for clinical advice or just a friendly chat, I’m here.
09.01.2022 2 weeks on since RUOK day and it's got us thinking... We often seek psychological support in response to feeling negative emotions, but what about proactively seeking this sort of care? This doesn't necessarily need to look like weekly appointments booked in with a clinical psychologist. It could be as simple as opening up to someone close, having a deep and meaningful discussion about how you're feeling, or perhaps it could take the form of simply keeping a journal.... We know it can be easier said than done, so start small - perhaps a daily walk? For more proactive healthcare tips, check in with Sam and/or subscribe to our fab e-news today! clinic.us10.list-manage.com/subscribe

06.01.2022 What do glitter and mental wellness have in common? In diabetes education we literally teach people to be anxious; - Test your bloods... - Interpret those blood sugars - Take action on those blood sugars - Count your carbs - Understand fat and protein interaction and influence on said carbs - Learn what will effect your blood sugars - And the best one - DON'T HAVE A HYPO! All this can be incredibly anxiety inducing, and what better way to manage some of that anxiety than jars full of glitter... That's why this Mindfulness Monday, we're looking at DIY glitter jars! At MyDiabetes, we love glitter and we love mindfulness, so get on board and learn how to make your own here:
05.01.2022 Sometime as a Diabetes Educator you get tik toked where you’re not looking... on your own account.... set up by your patient.... Adorable little pumper! (Parental consent acquired)

04.01.2022 In the car when someone won't let you merge that person who pushes in line, that person just keeps talking over you... Very annoying right? These moments are the ones that really challenge our kindness muscle ... They might actually be invitations for you to flex in a different way. Happy World Kindness Day 2020 Let’s be kind, even to the people that suck sometimes.
