23.01.2022 Not long until 2015 now. New school year with new children starting Kindergarten. Here are some skills that your child should be able to do before starting school: - Be able to recognise and write their name - Have a hand dominance - Be able to draw squares, triangles, X and + - Be able to cut a straight line... - Be able to draw a recognisable person - Complete an interlocking puzzle - Be able to use a pincer grasp to pick up items (thumb and index finger together) - Know all their colours and be able to match them - Catch, kick and throw a small ball - Hop, skip, jump and run - Be able to concentrate at the table for at least 10 minutes - Toilet trained - Eat skilfully - Listen and follow simple instructions - Ask for help - Socialise with peers There are the major skills that your child will need. If they are having difficulties with any of the above skills, an Occupational Therapy Assessment may be required before starting school.

12.01.2022 A great quote about early intervention: "The brain, especially the young brain, is naturally malleable; structure and function become more firm and set with age. The formative capacity allows person-environment interaction to promote and enhance neurointegrative efficiency. A deficiency in the individuals ability to engage effectively in this transaction at critical periods interferes with optimal brain development and consequent overall ability. Identifying the deficient areas at a young age and addressing them therapeutically can enhance the individuals opportunity for normal development". - Jean Ayres

10.01.2022 Testimonial from client's mum (yes I have permission to use their names within this post): Samantha Rasa has a very relaxed & comfortable way with children which is very reassuring. Beau enjoys going to sessions with her & doesn't notice that the tasks she sets are helping him with his writing along with his fine & gross motor skills. ... Sam is very accommodating & even went to observe Beau in his school environment. I have seen a vast improvement in his writing & with additional sessions & homework tasks set, I feel confident that Samantha will sort Beau`s handwriting difficulties. Nic S

07.01.2022 Fine motor activity ideas for the holidays to improve finger and hand strength as well as fine motor precision: - Threading macaroni to make a necklace - Pegging pegs around a bucket - Colouring in small pictures and decorating with stickers and stamps - Decorating biscuits with m&ms or 100s and 1000s ... - Play marble soccer - String games - See how fast you can flip 10 coins over or place into a piggy bank - Touch your fingers to your thumb as quick as you can So many small activities you can complete and focus on improving their skills for school. If you would like some further activities please let me know :)

07.01.2022 Activity ideas for the holidays: If your child has too much energy and it's cold outside you can give them these gross motor activities to do indoors: Animal walks - bear walks (on their hands and feet facing the ground crawl like a bear across the room), crab walks (facing the roof on their hands and feet lifting their hips off the ground walk like a crab across the room), kangaroo jumps (jumping with feet together), and bunny hops (place hands onto the ground whilst facing... the ground and kick your legs up behind you). Have doonas and cushions that they can crash or leap onto. Walk with stompers - play a game where they have to make a beat that you or a sibling can copy. There are just a few ideas to keep your children occupied :)
