25.01.2022 I'm not usually into fads especially fad diets, but I will doing @weareveganuary this year. Because I support the mission of everybody in the world eating less meat and the positive impact reducing our daily consumption of animal based products can and will have on our planet but also eating less meat: Regenerates optimal pH in our body, therefor reduces inflammation in the body lowers blood cholesterol ... restores your microbiome optimize gene expression reduce susceptibility to diabetes whole plant proteins safe & natura levels restore planatery health and microbiology If 31 days feels too extreme why not make better choices one meal at a time. MORE #FRUIT MORE #VEGETABLES MORE #SEEDS MORE #NUTS MORE #WHOLEGRAINS I'm so excited for how energised, focused and happy I am going to feel. And remember... its not about eating less, it's about eating MORE of the healthy (vegan) stuff. Happy New Year friends Stuck for recipes or how to #veganuary? Make an appointment with me and we can nut (pardon the pun) it out! #brisbanenaturopath #brisbanenutritionist #health
25.01.2022 I am taking some respite from the noise and enjoying some much needed rest, something I have had very little of for too long. What a gift we have been given to retreat to our homes and spend time in solitude or with our families and friends. Perception is a powerful tool. What we do know of COVID-19 virus is that the impact is more servere in people with compromised #immunesystems. #Stress, whether it be biological or #emotional is a significant cause of immune compromise. R...emember, you cannot control the outcome of any of this however, you can control your response. Stay calm. Relieve the stress response with #herbalteas such as #passionflower and #ashwaghanda and #licoriceroot. Refrain from over-stimulating the #adrenals with those extra cups of #tea and coffee. Reduce alcohol intake as it lowers the immune system. Be responsible for your own #health and #hygiene cos taking care of yourself is taking care of others. Be prepared. Panicking is an unproductive activity, rather quite harmful in many ways. Be smart, be inventive and resourceful. Reach out to loved ones. Offer help to those in need, shop for those in lockdown. This will lower #cortisol and improve #dopamine. I will write an informative #blog on preventative medicine in the coming days for #education in holistic healthcare. Thinking of you all at this time. Sending lots of #love and #prayers from our family to yours. Xx #thistooshallpass #naturopath #sustainablehealth #preventativehealth #determinantsofhealth

24.01.2022 Boost your #immune system with SPROUTS! A nutritional powerhouse, they contain a surprising amount of #vitaminC, #vitaminA and #vitaminD all essential nutrients in immune health and healing. Sprouts are high in #polyphenols, and #flavonoids and #broccoli sprouts contain #sulforaphane, a powerful #antioxidant and #antiinflammatory, again able to reduce ROS in the body. (see first post) Some of the #nutrient value in sprouts can be lost when heated, so sprouts are best eaten #r...aw. I love this tip. #Growyourown greens from your kitchen, you dont have to leave the house. Try it with your favourite #legume, I love #chickpea, #lentil and #adzuki beans. Did you know you can sprout #pumpkin and #sunflower #seeds too? Place 2 tablespoons in a mason jar, cover the top with cheesecloth or mesh or lid with many holes in it. Fill with water, let sit for a few hours, drain, rinse. Turn the jar upside down, place in a warm, light area out of direct sunlight and watch them grow. Typically, a week after germination, the sprouts will have the highest concentration and bio-availability of nutrients. Caution: growing your own is preferable to purchasing established sprouts. While sprouts are highly beneficial, they can be a breeding ground for bacteria, specially store bought as you cant be sure of the conditions of which they have been grown or kept. Make sure you wash thoroughly before use and store in the fridge once grown. Hope everyone is faring well. See you tomorrow. xx #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #holistichealth #sustainablehealth #coronavirus
24.01.2022 #Gratefulness is a practice which is #free and available to you at anytime The #art and #act of gratefulness asks us to notice what is already #present and #abundant in our lives, from the tiniest recognition of #beauty to our greatest of #blessings. Each can only be defined by the beholder. Gratefulness is learning to #focus our attention on acknowledging the #positive aspects that are available to us in our own lives, especially when times are tough. Gratefulness allows us... to see opportunities, to #learn and #grow from what we already have and offer #care and #compassion to others without judgement. Gratefulness is a #mindfulness practice, which can be practiced at any time of the day, however, in the #mornings it can lead your day in a favourable way. Steal a moment for yourself, choose to be still, take three deep #breaths and actively remember that of which you are grateful. Its up to you how much you remember. You can start by choosing two things. Actively feel the gratefulness of your remembering. #Bepresent. Can you feel it? You have just experienced gratefulness and joy with nothing but the power of being present. Practice this as often as you choose. WARNING: this will bring a sense of #wellbeing. Its gratefulness which brings us #happiness, not happiness in which brings us gratefulness. Happy weekend all. 20.01.2022 With just over a week left of the year 2020, you might be asking yourself where the hell you are and how the hell you got here!?And where to now? From wherever you are the science says healthy body, healthy mind which means the baseline for health is based on healthy foundations of healthy behaviours. Public health concerns and social crisis may be here to stay so resilience is imperative.... Herbal medicine offers exceptional stress and adaptagen support which creates a cradle for our adrenals and HPA axis, reducing circulating cortisol thus reducing inflammation and pain, improving sleep and energy and clearing the fog from cognition which helps you to make clear decisions. Times of high stress also impair neurotransmitter production of dopamine and serotonin which are critical in healthy decision making. There is much support available in natural medicine, so if you are struggling to get over that line reach out. I specialise in personalised herbal tinctures and nutraceuticals specific to you, which will get you to where you want to be sooner. New year, best you! x
20.01.2022 Here is an article I wrote for Flannerys Organic & Wholefood Market regarding female health and hormones for #internationalwomensday Enjoy! X
19.01.2022 The concept of (W)holistic #medicine considers that a #whole is made up of interdependent parts, and that function of the whole depends on optimal function of the seperate parts, and that one does not function without the other. And so, we, as a #community and within our #ecology must function as a whole and exist in optimal #health, to maintain our #wellbeing. #Mothernature... as is within, is outside of us. @anniespratt
19.01.2022 #BODY, #MIND & #SOUL. These three aspects are integrated into a whole and design the total human being. So when we are addressing an individuals #health, all three aspects must be supported and integrated into a synergistic whole for the outcome of #WELLNESS. This is a #holistic approach.
19.01.2022 The Health of your Home #cleanliving #sustainableliving Did you realise that conditions of our home and living environment can have a huge impact on our health?... Considerations around how our food is packaged when we purchase it, how we store, heat and freeze our food? What we wash our dishes and clothes in and the chemicals we clean our homes with, let alone the what we use on our bodies (shampoos, make-up etc). And what about the area you live in? Is there mold in the home, or pollution from roads, pesticides, farming etc!? The long-term effects of a poisonous environment can be detrimental to your health: cancer, respiratory diseases, autoimmune conditions, and your children's health and their children's health as well. It's slow and quite often not obvious until it's too late. I can work with you and your family to investigate the health of your home and family and to create a clean living environment. I call this sustainable living. It's a very important part of improving the health of individuals and the community but our environment also. Make an appointment at samanthasomersnaturopath.com

18.01.2022 #Mindfulness and #meditation practice is associated with enhanced quality of life and decreased #stress symptoms by acting upon the hypithalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which lowers #cortisol, removing the progression for the pattern of dis-ease, improving #moods, #sleep cycles, dis-ease symptoms, reducing #inflammation and improving quality of #life.
17.01.2022 Did you know the #herb #THYME has three times the amount of #vitaminC, gram for gram than oranges? Thyme is an effective #herbalmedicine in #respiratoryconditions and assists in alleviating #coughs and reducing dyspnoea (laboured breathing) and shortening the length of a #disease, and can be used topically for #inflammation of the #throat due to its #immunomodulatory, #antibacterial, #antiinflammatory and #antioxidant nature. This in part due to its active constituent #thymol.... #Coronavirus includes symptoms of a sore throat, cough and laboured breathing. Make a Thyme tea (infusion): boil 1 cup of water and pour over 2 teaspoons of dried or fresh thyme leafs. Let seep for minimum 15mins before drinking. Garnish your food with thyme. Make an olive oil infusion by placing many sprigs of thyme and olive oil in a bottle and allow to infuse. Chew on time for a more localized and pungent effect. Ventilation may be achieved by adding fresh or dried thyme to boiled water in a bucket, place your head over the bucket and cover with a towel. You can easily grow thyme in your #garden, making it essentially free and easily accessible. Apparently, thyme can also be used as a garnish in #quarantinis. I do not endorse over consumption of alcohol. See you tomorrow xx #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #holistichealth #sustainablehealth #naturalmedicine

12.01.2022 To #support you in these times Im going to share with you simple, yet effective #sciencebased, #traditional #natural #medicine approaches to support the #immunesystem, #nervoussystem and #lifestyle adaptations which are #sustainable and #affordable for yourself and your #family using #foodasmedicine, #herbalmedicine and #holisticmentoring. These suggestions are not proven to directly target coronavirus but may be effective for protecting from respiratory infections and to en...hance overall immune function. Lets start with #GARLIC Garlic has #immunomodulatory activity which means it stimulates immunes cells. It also inhibits the production of cytokines which control the immune response and cause #inflammation. #Coronavirus is known to cause a #cytokinestorm in the body. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause damage to immune cells in the body. Coronavirus can exhibit ROS. Garlic is a powerful #antioxidant which may reduce ROS in the body. Garlic is also a #prebiotic, making it effective in achieving #healthy #microbiome and a #happygut. There are many other #benefits to garlic. Garlics main active ingredient is #Allicin. Allicin is not active until the garlic is crushed or cut. Daily, I crush 2 organic Italian cloves each, fresh, for my husband and I, into a teaspoon then a add a small amount of #manukahoney and consume. Its more palatable then you may expect and so good for you. Enjoy xx #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist

10.01.2022 2020 - a year we will never forget and has left us all humbled... #desiderata GO PLACIDLYamid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.... Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
09.01.2022 Im sorry to see those who have been so badly affected indirectly by the #coronavirus, my heart goes out to you. I am observing an array of responses, understandably depending on your own circumstances, and widespread #panic and #anxiety. Id like you to understand that when we respond to a situation with anxiety it engages the acute stress response of the sympathetic nervous system and the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis upregulates, resulting in an influx of catec...holamines, specifically #norepinephrine and #epinephrine. Dependant on the length and strength of the #stress and underlying #health of the individual #hormones oestrogen, testosterone and #cortisol and #neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin will be affected. Once the stress response is active it effects the way we can respond further, impairing clear decision making, self-regulation and our ability to serve our basic needs. Herein lies the detriment to our health such as; disregard for adequate #nourishment through food, rest and emotional support and addictive behaviours may be engaged. Many suggestions can be made to support on an individual case by case basis. Allow me to make 4 suggestions. Hydrotherapy: #Magnesium bath salts; either in a full size bath or in a bucket for a foot bath. Magnesium inhibits the fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system) response of the body and relaxes and allows the parasympathetic to continue its job. #Lavender essential oil in the magnesium salt bath. Lavender actions include #nervine, #antidepressant, #sedative and #analgesic. #Passionflower #herb. A personal favourite which I always have on hand. Passionflower, a #nervoussystem #tonic, instantly relaxes the body and lowers cortisol however, it does not effect cognition or focus, so it allows you to continue with your day, although its important to rest if your nervous systam is on high demand. This is readily available in tea. #Ashwaghanda otherwise known as #withania (root) is a beautiful #ancient #adaptagen and #nervoussystem #restorative #tonic wich supports the stress response, reducing cortisol and supporting the #adrenals.

06.01.2022 According to the Harvard Health Medical School, the Institute of Medicine, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine, exercise is the best-kept secret in preventive medicine. Despite our other differences, we all need to exercise for health. Regular exercise provides essential protection against many of the diseases that plague our country. The list includes:... heart attack stroke high blood pressure diabetes obesity osteoporosis and fractures depression colon and breast cancers dementia (memory loss). What does it take to get these benefits? Less than you might think. The key is what exercise scientists call isotonic exercise activities that use your large muscle groups in a rhythmic, repetitive fashion without making your muscles work against heavy resistance. In fact, you can get all the health benefits you need from moderate exercise that won't make you huff and puff, even if you do it in little chunks as long as it adds up to enough total activity. So how much exercise do you need? Just enough to meet your goals. Make health your priority, and remember to get a check-up before you start a big new exercise push. Choose the activities that best fit your schedule, your budget, your abilities, and your taste. Construct a balanced program by adding the weight training, stretching, and exercises for balance that you need. Start slowly, build up gradually, and above all stick with it. As Yogi might have said, exercise is 50% ability and 90% persistence.

01.01.2022 THRUSH (Candida albicans) Has the silly season gotten your nickers in a knot? Has the overindulgence of sweets, carbohydrates, and alcohol got your labia, minora, perineal and anal areas itching and burning? Have you got white curd-like clumps of discharge making you uncomfortable in the panties? Candida albicans, commonly known as thrush is a common infection in women of childbearing age with 75% chance you will be affected at least once, but a condition which is prevalent i...n clinic right now. The rise in occurrence currently can be due rise in hormonal imbalances, such as oestrogens from stress which cause microflora susceptibility and a change in the pH in the vaginal cavity creating a breeding ground for bacterial overgrowth, the increased consumption of causative foods and alcohol feeding the bacteria and the hot, whether which provides the warm, moist environment for the bacteria to grow. Other causes include oral contraceptive use, antibiotic use, immunosuppression, dysbiosis and Diabetes myelitis. Medical management is usually a course of anti-fungal cream or pessary however the underlying pH imbalance and microflora is not corrected which allows for recurrent infections. Effective treatment for Candida albicans includes correction of pH imbalance in the gut and the vaginal cavity. Intra-vaginal administration for 6-12 days of strains of probiotics have been shown to be effective for optimal microflora of the vagina include: Lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus rhamnosus (GR-1) Lactobacillus fermentum (RC-14) Saccharomyces boulardii Herbs effective in the treatment of thrush include: Melaleuca alterniflora Hydrastis canadensis Calendula offcinalis Ensuring adequate vitamin D status is also appropriate. Thrush can be a complex condition, and a very uncomfortable one too, but it is super important to correct the imbalance and not just suppress it further.
