21.01.2022 We’re thrilled to share that the Penguin Bloom movie has been selected for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival #repost @tasmanian_grizzly Some very exciting movie news: Penguin Bloom (the movie) has been officially selected for the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It is the only Australian film to be included this year.... TIFF is the premier Canadian film festival, one of the world's biggest, and normally features over 350 unreleased films (sometimes as many as 460). But this year (due to COVID-safe screening requirements) has only accepted 50 films in total; by far the lowest number in the history of the festival (the previous record was 85 films in 1978). Not only that, but Penguin Bloom will be featured in the elite Special Presentation category, with only 6 other films (featuring such cinematic greats as Anthony Hopkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Olivia Colman and Viggo Mortensen). Does this mean Penguin Bloom is internationally regarded as one of the 7 best movies made in 2019/2020? Yes, I choose to think it does. Either way, it is a tremendously exciting honour for our film to be included. Writing the original book with Sam Bloom and Cameron Bloom was a heartbreaking labour of love, and it was quite overwhelming to see this deeply personal story on the big screen. This was my first time on a movie set as an author, and the cast and crew were extraordinary; the hard work and creative passion that goes into a major film production is humbling, exhilarating and inspiring. And the finished result is, quite simply, wonderful. If you loved the book, then you'll love the movie. See more
20.01.2022 Sweating to stay sane Two questions I'm often asked are "What do you do to maintain your mental health?" and "How did you/do you make it through the hardest times and the darkest days?" The answer is the same for both - I keep moving my body. I've found exercise is one of the best ways to pull through difficult days, but also that when I exercise consistently, those difficult days are fewer and further between. My best advice is to just keep moving! Blackmores #partner

13.01.2022 In 1998 Cam and I were incredibly lucky to spend time documenting the extraordinary work of Australian Dr Catherine Hamlin at her Obstetric Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia . I’ll never forget the incredible resilience and bravery of the young girls whose lives were completely transformed by Dr Hamlins’ pioneering surgery. She gave both hope and dignity performing surgery to over 60,000 women. Catherine, who was 96 passed away Wednesday at home on the hospital g...rounds where this portrait was taken. Walking independently or even just being able to stand is my ultimate dream. There’s a lot happening with spinal cord injury research around the world and progress is being made. 08.01.2022 Life is many things all at once, and some of those things suck. Plain and simple. The remedy, to the degree that any exists, is to not let the misery of the bad prevent you from enjoying the good. And while that is far easier said than done, this is exactly how I can hate being paralysed and still be grateful to be alive. I can be deeply unhappy about my pain and disability and still be capable of great happiness. I can feel ashamed of myself for pushing my best freind away... when I was depressed and I can enjoy rebuilding that friendship. I can regret the tragedy that befell my family in Thailand seven years ago and still look forward to what life has to offer. I don’t know that ‘balance’ is the right word, but it’s not all or nothing. Life is always a blend of good and bad, and while I don’t pretend I’m not hurting, I can still find joy and meaning in my life. 05.01.2022 The one thing I miss most by far while having to self isolate are my gym sessions with my personal trainer Mandy @perfectfitpeople Exercise has always played a huge part in my physical and mental well-being, so now while most of us are stuck at home, we all have to improvise and get creative. There is something powerful yet calming about the ocean... it has no memory of our pain. 03.01.2022 As you can see BTG is a much bigger and stronger person than me. He’s also a much better writer. Our long conversations over two years formed the basis of the new book. At times, I shared more with BTG than I ever did with Cam. It meant going back to some dark places and revealing a few tragic moments in my life and equally sharing some of the highs. ...
