12.01.2022 You've all probably seen this photo of the cow eating the snake doing the rounds, and I've seen a lot of comments about this, mostly misconceptions about how st...arving the cow might be. So I thought I'd add a little bit of info here for you, and feel free to share the info with others when you see the comments. Cows do eat dead animals. Not because they're starving and there's nothing else to eat, but because they're chasing trace elements and minerals. In our country, they're mostly chasing phosphorous (P) as most of Northern Australian soils are very deficient in available P and the bones on a carcass can provide that. We've also found that our cows running on the red country chase phosphorous even more, and we've been told the Iron in the soil (which makes it red) depletes the available P even more. P is a really important mineral for our cows, especially pregnant and lactating, as well as growing calves. It helps with milk production and building bone strength. So because our soils are lacking it, we feed out mineral supplement (or lick) that has P in it. Over the wet season, we feed a different type of lick that is much higher in P than our dry season one as the cows have different nutritional needs at different times of the year. We also vaccinate our cows yearly for "botulism" which is a deadly bacterial disease which cows can get from chewing bones etc. Because even though we give them extra P as well as a whole host of other minerals, cows will be cows and snuffle, lick and chew on all sorts of things. As well as all of this, we are also working on healthier soils and a more robust and bountiful pasture to keep the cows on good grass all year round, or as much as we can with wildly swinging seasons! We come at this issue from a three pronged approach to try and keep the cows healthy and happy. I hope this clears up some questions you might have :) Andrew Gertz
