10.01.2022 Today in Samoa people of Samoa are marching to protest the movement of Domestic Violence against Women and to break the Silence. Someone you know, someone you ...care about or someone you love is a victim or perpetrator of Domestic Violence. In the past, Domestic violence was seen as a taboo within our Pasifika cultures. It was an 'issue' that was seen but not heard. It was visible but never acknowledged. Instead it was covered up, disregarded and disguised with many excuses and through our silence we continued to allow this type of violence to make its way into our homes, our families and in to our society. Considered as a shame factor and often a fear factor, it became the 'norm' to remain quiet, which to some extent, made things 'easier' because then you could continue to pretend, to hide beneath many facades, to convince yourself that everything was ok, that it was ok, that you were ok. It seemed somewhat 'better' to accept the pain inflicted upon you by the hands of someone else, the hands of someone you love without having to worry about other people knowing your business after all, what would the repercussions of saying something be? Would it be worth it? Would it make a difference? Isn't it better if what happens in our home stays in the home? NO NO NO!!! Domestic violence in any shape or form whether it be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological or economic is NOT OK. Domestic Violence is NOT ACCEPTABLE! It is not one sided. It affects you. It affects them. It affects both Women and men. It affects the children. It affects black and white. It affects all cultures and communities. It is a social problem that people feel helpless about but if we acknowledge it, if we speak up, if we stand together in the fight against Domestic Violence then we can help to stop it because PREVENTION IS NOT INEVITABLE. Early intervention means early prevention. We need to support the victims and educate the perpetrators because no one has the right to lay their hands and cause pain on someone else. Everyone deserves to be safe and has the right to feel safe. We need to help break the cycles of Domestic Violence, to speak up and to take a stand because the more we proceed to remain quiet, the more we enable Domestic Violence to continue. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud...Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres". I'm taking a stand, what about you? #StandAgainstDomesticViolence Photo design credit to: LSGDesigns. DM
