08.01.2022 One more time, there's no better way to support your local joint than getting out there and grabbing some takeaway coffee and food. However, for those who don't... have a cafe close by or feel too anxious to bring themselves there (legit), we wanted to share one of the simplest brewing methods using a device that exists in 90% of the Australian households (and is sold in 100% of non-specialty homewares stores near you): the French press. All you need are some fresh beans/grounds, baking scales and a timer (phone), and you'd be able to brew a pretty decent coffee super easy at home. . Recipe for 3 cups: 1 Grind/grab 20g of coffee and put some water to boil. 2 Place grounds in the French press and pour 100g of just-boiled water. 3 Wait 30 seconds, then give it a stir with a spoon. 4 Add 225g water and wait 4 minutes. 5 Break the crust on top of the brew and scoop up any large grounds. 6 Put the top of the French press in place, wait 15 seconds and then press all the way. 7 Voilà! He forgot to bring his Aeropress kit, so he ended up driving to the nearest Kmart and purchasing the plunger for about $15. It saved the trip right until 2 days before the end, when someone (don't look at me) cracked the glass while *gently* shaking it against the bin to pour all the grounds out. The moral of the story is: 1. brewing French press is simple and easy; 2. clean it under a generous stream of water, under the tap; 3. do NOT deprive Reuben of a caffeine source on a holidaynot fun. It’s Andre Hakizinmana, our last Rwandan single of the season, up for retail (until it runs out). htt...ps://samplecoffee.com.au/coffee/andre-hakizimana Brought to us by Melbourne Coffee Merchants, this is one of the few green coffees from Rwanda that can be traced back to a single producer (the same case as Marie Bedabasingwa, if you can remember). Andre has worked in coffee for over 40 years, and apart from owning over 3,000 trees, he is a very active member of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative. This organisation processes the region's coffees and invests in other projects such as a dairy refrigeration facility and a pasteurisation machine. This has been a huge game-changer, supporting the nutrition and income diversification of the coffee producers and their families. Plus, they get to close the circle by using cow manure as fertiliser for coffee trees. Another project Dukunde Kawa has led together with MCM is Rambagira Kawa, a community room for the 289 female cooperative members. This is a safe space where they can connect, chill and make stuff like the pictured colourful baskets. We share our learnings amongst each other so that we can provide opinions from one to another our solidarity is something we can build on, says Odette Murekate, the leader of the women’s group.
