22.01.2022 If you had to describe yourself in a few words, would "resilient" be one of them? Dr Alex Lickerman conducted a study of 205 widows and widowers who demonstrated patterns of grief after losing their spouses. Surprisingly, most of them returned to their previous baseline level of functioning within 18 months. Only 15% experienced chronic grief, and just 10% became depressed for a while before returning to their original state of happiness. The most surprising finding, however,... was that a full 46% of subjectsalmost halfNEVER became depressed at all! We call this being "resilient" - the ability to resist becoming depressed in the first place, or to return to your original state after suffering a loss or a setback. Studies show we are all much more likely to fit into this "resilient" pattern than we think. Of course, simply knowing that we will most likely recover does not necessarily lessen the immense short-term suffering many of us experience in times of loss. However, there are things we can do to train our minds into resilience. The first step is to accept that when adversity strikes, you will likely feel bad, scared, depressed, and anxious. But remember: those feelings are signs of external circumstances and are not necessarily an indication of your inner strength or your ability to recover. They need not paralyze us. Nor does their presence necessarily limit our ability to manage such adversity in the long run. Believe in, embrace, and feed your ability to bounce back. So today, in these strange, unsettling times, accept your own resilience and practice it. And remember: when adversity strikes, you may not be able to predict the future - but your ability to create it is far greater than you think. With love, See more

02.01.2022 Hello there, Have you ever noticed how being stressed has somehow become something of a status symbol? It’s like if you’re not stressed, you’re simply not working hard enough to live your best life! How did THAT happen? One of the most common myths about stress is that it’s a motivator.... Dr Hans Selye, the Hungarian-Canadian endocrinologist who became known as the father of stress research, was the first person to use the word in a medical context, describing it as the nonspecific response of the body to any demand. In the 1950s, Dr. Selye found that activities such as sports and sex produced a surge in stress hormones, leading him to pronounce that stress could be a good thing. Since then, research has proven stress contributes to between 75% and 90% of all medical conditions, including the six leading causes of death! Stimulation is good for you; stress is not. Having deadlines, setting goals, and pushing yourself to perform at capacity are stimulating. Stress is when you're anxious, upset or frustrated, and less able to perform. People who get things done under stress are succeeding in spite of their stress, not because of it. So, instead of simply accepting and trying to manage your stress, why not try to eliminate it starting today? One of the best ways to do this is to meditate. Meditation can help reduce stress, promote personal growth and insight, and lead to better relationships. Start with two minutes a day and work your way up to 20 or 30 minutes if you find longer meditations more helpful. Monika currently has three meditations on the wonderful app Insight Timer. You can go here right now http://insig.ht/monikazands to listen to Meditations with Monika and download the Insight Timer app. We hope you find them helpful. All our love, Jan and Monika See more
