22.01.2022 OTHERWISE KNOWN AS FIGHT OR FLIGHT..... The sympathetic nervous system's primary process is to stimulate the body's fight or flight response. When the physical, mental or emotional trigger of a 'stressful' situation is perceived, a flash flood of hormones boosts the body's alertness and heart rate, sending extra blood to the muscles to respond to the danger.... The SNS was designed to literally save our life from drought, war or flood. And the time spent in this system was more less than often..... Today, we are in this system more often than not, and the consequences are now the real threat to our lives. When we react to life - mentally, emotionally and physically - as if our life depends on it - our body is unable to rest and repair itself. Our heart rate increases, along with our anxiousness and perhaps depression, we become reactive to life and lose the ability to respond, our breathe shortens and our immunity becomes compromised..... and the list goes on and on. Not all stress is 'bad', it can often strengthen us. The concern is, we spend too much time in fight and flight, when doing simple daily tasks like driving and cooking dinner. This is your reminder to take a break. Breathe. Relax. Be. b x

13.01.2022 INNER CALM IS THE NEW SUPER HUMAN POWER.... This picture was taken in 2012, a few months after founding and opening the 1st Samsara, in Canberra. It was around the same time that I started practicing Yoga and honestly, I would not be where I am without it !!!! In all the ways - body, mind and soul !... I started Yoga with a physical goal in mind and although I feel the changes within my body, its the changes within my mind, heart and soul that have made the BIGGEST difference to my heath and wellbeing today. 12.01.2022 MY NUMBER ONE HEALTH TIP.... BREATHE Why... because without it you will die. Because we can not consciously control the Parasympathetic (Rest and digest) and Sympathetic (fight or flight) systems, the only way we can have influence over them is, how we breathe. ... Short and sharp, shallow breathes that move only the upper chest, allow adrenaline to drive our body and this way of breathing continues to promote more stress hormone. Historically, we only produce adrenaline and breathe this way when our life was in danger. So, when we slowly and diaphragmatically breathe in and out the NOSE (belly breaths) - we communicate to every cell in the body that we are safe. This type of breathing is something we will find in our Yoga, Pilates, and Breathe Classes. Its in the state of the Parasympathetic system, activated by belly breathes, that the body is able to REST, RESTORE, DETOXIFY, ELIMINATE AND everything else it was designed to do. When we learn to practice this type of breathing more often - belly breaths - our body can 'catch - up', when can learn to RESPOND to life, rather than REACT. We can learn to say 'No', and have healthy boundaries that keep us well. We may even learn to be more present, and less ' busy'. TAKE HOME NOTE - breathe ! B x

04.01.2022 FINDING A SPACE TO STRETCH.... Moving your body is essential for optimal health and fitness, we all know that..... however, how many of us forget to, or don't make the time to stretch ?!? It doesn't have to be for 20 minutes, or even 10 minutes, rather start with a gentle 5 minutes after each session.... Find or friend or a quiet place. Or, enjoy it over weekend ! Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Eventually, old thinking patterns of self doubt return and the 'motivation' that got you started, has now disappeared !... For long term health and fitness, I believe the relationship you have with yourself and your body MUST come from a place of love, acceptance and forgiveness - a change of heart and thought about oneself. Even if you don't believe it as first, you MUST create a MINDSET of self-love and acceptance. 03.01.2022 MOVING WITH MINDFULNESS..... We all know we need to move our body and to be honest most of you may be a little tired of hearing about it ! This is your reminder that movement does not have to be a chore or something that you don't enjoy. Rather, something you crave, that brings you calm, inner peace, strength and confidence.... If you don't feel like 'moving', opt for mindful moving through mobility and stretch. By stretching the muscles of you beautiful body will help lengthen them, preventing tightness and recovery time. This type of mobility movement will also make the muscles more pliable, allowing it to withstand more strain and stress. I personally find this type of movement relaxing, my breath deepens and I feel more inner calm and presences. Try it ! b x
