19.01.2022 Through our hard work, Western Australia continues to have an excellent record in the fight against COVID-19. We are now a week into Phase Two of eased restrict...ions, and have continued to see no local outbreaks in Western Australia. Its a great result, and it gives us reassurance as we can continue to relax restrictions within our State. Today, we can announce the next step in that process. Of all the current restrictions, we know that the limitations on travel throughout regional WA and the boundaries between regions have been particularly difficult for many regional communities. Putting up those boundaries was an important step to protect our regions - including many vulnerable Aboriginal communities and areas with limited access to healthcare. The boundaries meant that potential spread of the pandemic was slowed and contained. As the situation has played out, we have successfully avoided significant community outbreaks, but this was a vital precaution for our State, and for the health of regional Western Australians in particular. We are currently working hard to progress towards Phase Three of easing restrictions, and we will have more to say on that very soon. But today we can announce a change to take effect ahead of the WA Day long weekend, in line with expert health advice from WAs Chief Health Officer. This Friday, 29 May, all regions of Western Australia will be reopened except for those under Commonwealth Biosecurity Area restrictions. That means that travel will be permitted between the Pilbara, Gascoyne, North-West, Goldfields-Esperance, Wheatbelt, Great Southern, South West, Peel and Perth. As the Kimberley and other Biosecurity Areas are currently subject to a different set of restrictions, there is a separate process for reopening them. The WA Police Commissioner and the State Government are working with the Federal Government to remove the Biosecurity Areas from Friday, June 5 around two weeks earlier than the anticipated deadline set by the Federal Government. This means until then, people will need an exemption to enter the Kimberley region, parts of the East Pilbara and the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku. Following 5 June, travel to those areas will also be reopened - however restrictions on travel to remote Aboriginal communities will remain in place pending further consultation. I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding. These changes will help support our regional towns and local businesses, as well as allowing Western Australians to reconnect with their friends and family in regional WA. I urge everyone who can travel to do their bit, get out there, wander around our State and support local businesses. We should be proud that our efforts in stopping this pandemic have meant that were able to take action to remove these restrictions in WA. But I would again reiterate that these changes are only possible at this time because of our hard border with the eastern states. As we move forward, we will continue to act in line with the expert health advice of the WA Chief Health Officer and our local experts. In line with that advice, Western Australias hard border with the rest of the country will remain in place, and will likely be the final restriction lifted.

16.01.2022 BLACKBIRDING IN THE NORTH During the early colonial era blackbirding was rife in north west WA. The cruel practise of kidnapping black slaves from Indigenous ...and Asian communities to work for no pay on the pearling luggers and pastoral properties has been highlighted in a recent study of Barrow Island archaeological sites. People were dumped on the island to fend for themselves in between pearling trips. Glass points (spear heads) made by Aboriginal people from the Kimberley were found but no evidence of tinned foods, leading UWA researchers to believe people survived by fishing, hunting animals and gathering plants. Lead researcher Alistair Paterson says people were kidnapped off country from the Murchison and Fitzroy river areas and all coastal regions between Shark Bay and north of Broome. Bardi Jawi people of the Dampier Peninsula would run across Sunday Island to escape being caught by the pearlers. Women who ere the best divers were also used as sex slaves in the lead up to a WA royal commission in 1904. Descendants of Indigenous people in the Pilbara and Kimberley with ancestry of slavery are deeply upset by Prime Minister Morrisons comments that no slavery existed in Australia. In his defence, the PM said on Friday his comments referred to the first settlement in NSW where slavery was dismissed in the new colony by British abolitionist William Wilberforce. 05.01.2022 UPDATE: YOSHI THE LOGGERHEAD TURTLE Remember Yoshi the 180kg turtle who swam to the Pilbara coastline after being released from 20 years in a South African ...aquarium? Several months on, shes still in the Pilbara, but believed to be heading north, possibly towards Broome. Maryke Musson from Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation in Cape Town says Yoshi has spent a bit of time swimming up and down the coastline near 80 Mile Beach. "She seems to really enjoy 80 Mile Beach, and I think its because its remote, it sounds so nice and warm and there are lots of other turtles, I think mostly flatback turtles," she says. "Shes slowed right down which means shes really enjoying where shes at." Yoshi has covered 40,000km since her release two years ago. Remarkably the satellite tracking device is still sending updates, but the battery could die at any time. Jean Tresfon

05.01.2022 INTRODUCING MANUWARRA RED DOG HIGHWAY The Karratha-Tom Price Road will be officially called Manuwarra Red Dog Highway, the WA Government has announced as it off...icially opened the completed third stage of the $310 million project. Manuwarra translates as "heaps or masses" and is the Yindjibarndi name for the place known as Red Dog Gorge, inside Millstream Chichester National Park. A ceremony was held to make the naming, attended by Premier Mark McGowan and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti as well as Yindjibarndi representatives. The project, decades in the making, is funded by the Federal and State Governments. The 48km stage three section of road will improve access to the national park and also Karijini National Park.
