24.01.2022 SCAM CALLERS - BE AWARE Northern Territory Police are urging the public to be aware of scam calls. Police have been made aware that there has been an increase... in scam callers from number displayed as local police stations. The scam callers are stating they are from the 'Taxation Office'. These phone calls are not from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) or Northern Territory Police. Recipients of these calls are advised to ignore them. Do not provide personal details and do not transfer money to any bank accounts. Anyone who receives these types of calls is urged to report them at cyber.gov.au/ . If you have suffered a financial loss through this type of fraud or other scams, report it to police on 131 444.

17.01.2022 CYBER CRIME AWARENESS - FAKE TAX DEBT CALLS NT Police Cybercrime are receiving increased reports of Fake Tax Debt telephone calls. This is well established of...fending where victims receive telephone calls, that often show fake caller id numbers and claim the victim has an outstanding tax debt or arrest warrant in their name. The offenders will either try to convince the victim to transfer funds as immediate payment or alternatively to provide identifying information such as tax file numbers or drivers licence information that the offenders can use to commit further offending. The Police or the ATO will never contact people with demands like this and there is no basis to the calls. If anyone receives a call like this they should just hang up or if it is a voice message delete it. If you have suffered a loss of either money or identifying information you should report the matter to Police through cyber.gov.au or to the ATO on 1800 008 540.

02.01.2022 NT Consumer Affairs recently received a call from a Territorian that had been scammed out of a whopping $17,000! The Territorian's house had just been renovated... and she was awaiting the last bill to be sent from her builder. However, unknown to her, the builder's computers had been hacked. When the bill arrived, it looked totally genuine with the same layout and logo as previous bills. However, the bill had been emailed by the hackers and had included the hackers banking details, not the original bank details of the builder. The problem wasn't detected until the builder called to ask why his bill had not yet been paid. These payment redirection scams are far more common than you may imagine. When paying any bill, take your time and carefully read all the banking details and ensure they are the same as your previous bill. If you notice a supplier’s usual bank account details have changed, call them to confirm. When you call them, find their number from their website, not from any scam contact details provided on the bill!
