24.01.2022 Status update on Edge Hill/ Whitfield NHW from the last month. Cairns is in the midst of a youth crime crisis with no end in sight. The time for change is now. We can’t afford to wait. It’s time for A FRESH APPROACH. Authorised by Samuel Byrd, Panoramic Place Whitfield

23.01.2022 I had the pleasure of catching up with Vincenzo Pappalardo founder of Pease St WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods this afternoon to discuss his thoughts on the global Coronavirus outbreak and what people in the community can do to keep safe. Vincenzo stressed that at this point basic protective measures are important, they include: * Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, co...ughing, or sneezing. * If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. * Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus infection and Vincenzo feels it is better to be over- prepared than underprepared. Pease St WholeLife Pharmacy & Health foods is fully stocked with hand sanitizers, face masks and immune boosters. Authorised By Samuel Byrd, Panoramic Place Whitfield

22.01.2022 STATE OF AFFAIRS Let’s talk about leadership, real leadership. The people of our community are experiencing some of theIr toughest days. ... Many people have asked me my thoughts on the local election in the last 48 hours. The current behaviour of sitting council members is absurd. Every one of them are camped out at the pre-polling venue, the Cairns Show Grounds, handing out how to vote cards, telling intending voters what they will do for them if re-elected. It is as though they imagine it is business as usual. Let’s be real. Cairns is on the verge of its greatest economic and health challenges since World War II. Coronavirus and it’s economic contagion is transforming the city. A period of radically curtailed tourism, with national borders closed to tourists starting tomorrow, Friday 20th March. Many retail and restaurant spaces will empty. Their teams and the supplier network are under pressure and many hundreds of jobs are being lost every day in our region. Many small businesses will fail. Unemployment and all its associated ills will rise. Given this situation, can anyone watching our current local leaders at the Cairns Show Grounds believe they are awake to reality? Is throwing pamphlets at anyone in sight and serving up platitudes on how you will serve the community remotely credible? If they have the best interests of our community at heart, why aren’t they in amongst their communities RIGHT NOW in the moment of unfolding crisis to offer whatever support they can? Instead the mayor and a number of current sitting councillors are continuing to give out hugs and handshakes. Hugs and handshakes? The Australian Government has issued a stern warning on not touching and re-iterating that social distancing is paramount in these unprecedented times. Our current leaders need to set the example and it’s blatantly obvious that they are more concerned about themselves rather then the community at large. I will no longer play along with the circus at the Cairns Show Grounds. Our elderly are most susceptible to Covid- 19. We are certainly not assisting them by having them turn up to the Show Grounds, hoping to escape the bustle of Election Day. Instead, they find themselves running a gauntlet of candidates throwing paper at them only to then find themselves thrust in to a congested queue for half an hour. There is no water for the heat, let alone provision for social distancing. I implore our leaders to lead. The community needs you now more then ever even if it’s just for reassurance and guidance. Take a stance, Any candidate worth their weight needs to act in the best interests of the community. It has never been more true: it is time for A FRESH APPROACH. 22.01.2022 Max's 'legend' is rival for poll Thank you Cairns Post for the write up this morning. Being identified as a 'local legend' by incumbent Cr. O'Halloran is an honour. 19.01.2022 Cairns is in trouble, real trouble. Tourism operators in the region are on their knees and crying out for support. Unfortunately their voices aren’t being heard. 17.01.2022 STREET SCAPE Imagine Collins Avenue as a sprawling urban habitat where the character of the precinct was carried outwards from the Botanical Gardens. The village centres of Edge Hill and Whitfield require a future design plan that addresses everything from street lighting, foot paths, bike paths, traffic calming and signage whilst maintaining the historic flavour of our neighbourhood. ... Businesses like Ten One Twenty with its sprawling wall vine and visually appealing wall art and Ozmosis with its garden wall and hanging baskets set the example and understand the importance of attractive streetscape and how it can help spur local economic activity but they need to be better supported. The current representation within council is tired, stale and seriously lacks creative imagination. 16.01.2022 Thank you Chris Calcino from the Cairns Post for the article posted in yesterdays paper. With one of the most represented division’s at this this years local elections, the candidates responses were somewhat condensed. In saying that, the article gives you a good insight into the varying approaches each potential councillor would take in representing their community. It’s time for A FRESH APPROACH.... 11.01.2022 REJUVENATING OUR CITY Empty commercial spaces around Cairns has become a far too common sight. Renew Newcastle focuses on revitalisation through creative use of empty spaces. 'Filling empty spaces has created a series of flow on effects. Reducing crime, graffiti, vandalism and giving a significant economic and social value back to the community that has attracted business and residential interest in the city.' - Renew Newcastle... Cairns Regional Council should look to adopt such a strategy and integrate it into local economic development policies and plans. http://renewnewcastle.org/about/ Authorised by Samuel Byrd, Panoramic Place Whitfield #renewnewcastle #integration #strategy #economicdevelopment #socialvalue #futureproofing #creativity #thinkingoutsidethebox #cityrevitalisation #afreshapproach

05.01.2022 HOW TO VOTE The ECQ have now finally made the correct decision in banning the distribution of how- to- vote cards at polling booths across the city. They have also prohibited candidates from canvassing booth sites entirely. I recommend residents of Division 7 to put a [1] next to Samuel Brian Byrd and a [2] next to Jules Steer - Division 7 Candidate. Jules is a community engager, full of heart and belief for her community and we share a similar approach and mindset towards l...ocal governance. With the challenges our city is going to face in the coming months, I implore everyone to take 10 minutes and educate themselves on the candidates running in the upcoming local election. Who is best suited to not only steading the ship, but driving it with full tenacity into clearer and calmer waters? Like, Share and Tag anyone you know who resides in division 7 which includes the suburbs of Edge Hill, Whitfield, Manoora, Manunda and Brinsmead. It's time for A FRESH APPROACH. 03.01.2022 We need to make a stance. We are fighting an invisible enemy and our elderly and most vulnerable are at risk. Let’s be real. 02.01.2022 FOOD TOURISM Cairns has the potential to become a food destination, serving locals and tourists alike. With the freshest seafood brought to our wharf every day and the Tablelands supplying some of the best tropical produce around, passionate food and beverage operators have opened some fantastic local food and beverage businesses. We can take this beginning and turn it in to a shining jewel of our city.... Why hasn’t the current council given these operators a permanent platform to showcase their products? We know the demand exists, as demonstrated by similar pop- up festivals such as Meet Eat Repeat and Cairns On A Fork. Many other councils in Australia have taken the initiative, working with local operators to help create and coordinate the likes of Mindil Beach Sunset Market in Darwin, Salamanca Market in Hobart and Eat Street Northshore in Brisbane. These are great examples of city councils thinking outside the square to bring home grown food and beverage operators together, offering the community a unique food and entertainment experience. Such experiences value add to a community, both by showcasing local talent and creating exciting experiences for locals. By contrast, Cairns has the council-run Esplanade Markets which must be one of the least inspiring market operations in Australia. Why continue to invest time and resources into something with little thought or creative imagination? It is time for A FRESH APPROACH Let’s make Cairns shine. 01.01.2022 Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Cathy Zeiger - Div. 3 Councillor, Cairns Regional Council who is an incredible lady and a much respected personality in our region. 01.01.2022 YOUTH CRIME IN CAIRNS Youth crime in Cairns is a serious problem. The more you unpeel the layers of the issue the more you understand there is no ‘easy fix’. Is this why local and state government have been reluctant to take it on? Division 7 has unfortunately become all too familiar with such crime with many of our residents having had their cars stolen or their homes burgled. Earlier this year NewsXpress Edge Hill was a victim of a break and enter and burglary, NOA was targ...Continue reading
