20.01.2022 "One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for your kids to do all their sports? Well I have a confession to make; I don't pay for my kids to to do... sports. Personally, I couldn't care less about what sport they do. So, if I am not paying for sports what am I paying for? - I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't. - I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go to their training but they go anyway. - I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined, focused and dedicated. - I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body and equipment. - I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates, gracious in defeat and humble in success. - I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that placing or title they'd hoped for, but still they go back week after week giving it their best shot. - I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals. - I pay for my kids to respect, not only themselves, but other riders, officials and coaches. - I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours, years and years of hard work and practice to create a champion and that success does not happen overnight. - I pay for my kids to be proud of small achievements, and to work towards long term goals. - I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships, create lifelong memories, to be as proud of their achievements as I am. - I pay so that my kids can be out on the track instead of in front of a screen... ...I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for sports; I pay for the opportunities that sports provides my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!"

19.01.2022 Senseis Paul and Justine were welcomed into the UK's spring Gashuku this weekend where they had the opportunity to train with Shihan Eddie Daniels and the amazing members of KSI UK for the weekend.

16.01.2022 The Meaning Of Shukokai Over the years I have heard many different meanings for the name Shukokai. The most common explanation you hear is, Loosely translated ...it means Way for all. This would have to be a very loose translation. Many years ago I had a Japanese gentleman come up to me at a demonstration and look at the patch on my Gi, he said, Ah Training, Friends, Place, as he read the three Kanji symbols under the fist. This confused me a little, so I decided to ask Sensei Kimura what Shukokai really meant. He broke down the word into three parts. Depending on the context, each symbol had a different meaning. In a martial arts context, it is as follows: Shukokai-Symbols SHU The study of the martial arts. KO People with a common cause, coming together. KAI Association. Basically it means: AN ASSOCIATION WHERE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER TO STUDY THE MARTIAL ARTS He went on to explain that in the 1950s his teacher, Sensei Tani, had wanted to create an association where the heads of all styles of Karate could come together to pool their ideas to create a standardized technique so that everyone was on the same page, instead of the variation which we see today (this could be where the Way for all translation may have come from). However his plan didnt work, probably due to the fact that everyone has an ego that they already had all of the answers. So, Sensei Tani who was teaching Shito Ryu kept the name Shukokai as the name of his association. When Sensei Kimura began traveling overseas to teach he called the style Shukokai, before that it was not a style name. As time passed Sensei Kimura had developed his technique to a point where it was technically different to Mr. Tani's Shito Ryu although he never forgot his connections to Mr Tani and still supported him in any way he could. by Gavin Armstrong

16.01.2022 A bit of history about our style

15.01.2022 Some photos from the KSI Australia Gashuku held on the Gold Coast this weekend

13.01.2022 In unpacking a box today I came across a Karate magazine I bought back in 1995 with an article written just after the passing of Shihan Kimura. Whilst I was nev...er fortunate enough to have trained with him, 23 years later I think the title of the article is just as relevant today. The enthusiasm and excitement referenced in the article is something I experience from every member of the Kimura Shukokai family around the world. It is an honour and a privilege to be a student of KSI and to be part of this amazing family. See more

10.01.2022 Mushin is a state of mental awareness that we all strive for in our martial arts training. Loosely translated it refers to a mind not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion, allowing it to be open to everything. A skill that is useful not only in combat but also in todays world where there is a constant battle for our focus on so many fronts.

09.01.2022 Responsible social distancing doesnt mean we have to stop training. Another great session tonight held online.

03.01.2022 When we start our karate training, we often focus on the physical aspects. Does my punch look okay? Is my block effective? How fast is my kick? We also start cultivating the skills of inner strength, focus and resilience - even if were not aware at the time. As our karate journey continues and we progress in our pursuit of self-improvement, distractions can and do enter. These can be external distractions like work commitments or internal ones like self-doubt. If we start... fighting the distractions we will lose, they will consume our focus and take our attention away from what matters most. Instead we need to acknowledge their presence and carry on with our journey. This is one of the toughest skills we are asked to develop as distractions come in all shapes and forms. However, if mastered, then we are able to be in control of environment no matter of the circumstances, not the other way around. How often does your environment control your focus in your daily life? Sometimes all it takes is the sound of a text message or the notification of an unread email to pull your attention away from what you were doing. https://youtu.be/nZUx0sc3z5k

03.01.2022 Congratulations to Shannon for successfully passing her Shodan grading this weekend under the watchful eye of Shihan Lionel. Dedication doesnt do justice to the commitment Shannon has made to her training and the dojo over the years.
