22.01.2022 Seasonal Mindfulness AUTUMN We are well into autumn now, the element of Metal, the organs of Lung & Large Intestine, and the beginning of the Yin cycle with the seasons.... As the seasons change, so do our bodies & minds requirements. Moving from the heights of yang & summer, where our energy was abundant, the sun warming us as we reached our expansive natures. We dined on salads & smoothies, foods that were quick to prepare, BBQs that efficiently seared in the goodness, and in a flash there were offerings ready to consume. Now as the sun nestles earlier into the evening & the trees release their shady canopy, there is a sense of stillness, a decline in activity & a feeling of coiling inward. Autumn summons us to prepare for our winter retreat, our hibernation, a time to nurture self, reflect & at the height of Yin, keep warm & nourished. In autumn be mindful of: *It's a time to pare away the excesses & clutter, letting go of the past & creating new space. This can be done physically by removing unwanted items in our homes & lives. Mentally by writing your resentments, hangups & old emotional baggage on a piece of paper & burning it, watching the smoke take your burdens away. *Metal reflects our core issues, during this time we can ponder, the guiding principles of life, & ask "who am I?" *Cooler days, mould & a changing climate can challenge the immune system, now is the time to support it with food & beverage. Cooking & eating becomes warmer & slower as we support our earth & water elements. Consuming fresh food that is steamed, baked, stirfried or slow cooked into nutrient dense soups & stews. Incorporating: *Oats, millet, corn rice *Carrot, leek, radish, cauliflower, mushrooms, root veggies, onions, sweet potato, pumpkin, fennel, garlic. *Cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamon, turmeric, chilli, ginger, black sesame. *Soy beans, walnuts, seaweeds, black beans, Chinese dates *Licorice tea, cornsilk tea just to name a few. *Breathing & meditation supports the Lung. With inspiration the Lung exchanges the good air for the bad air, giving & taking. If your Metal element is out of balance this process is thwarted & we become stiff & unyielding. *Drink lots of water. The Large Intestine is the organ of elimination, 5 - 7am is Large Intestine time on the Chinese organ clock. Upon awaking drinking 2 large cups of warm water to stimulate LI. Continue to drink adequate amounts of water as autumn is a drying time, you may notice your skin is dryer now! *The Lung & the Large Intestine work synchronistically; the Lung bringing in the pure & the Large Intestine removing the toxic. Have a cleansing & nourishing autumn Lara at SANA x

05.01.2022 Seasonal Mindfulness WINTER We find ourselves at the winter solstice, the longest night and the deepest Yin. We have been moving inward, physically into our houses and towards the warmth they offer, and spiritually towards our inner sanctum for reflection and stillness. Winter is a time to conserve our energies (Yang) and nourish our reserves (Yin), to rest, contemplate and witness ourselves without judgement. This hibernation of nature, the trees standing dormant, plants a...nd animals minimal in activity, is vital for repair from the last of the Yang seasons. This dormancy allows for the new enrgy that is required for our rebirth and regrowth in the expanding Spring. In Chinese medicine Winter is associated with the Water element and the organs Kidney and Bladder which oversee our water metabolism and homeostasis. The Kidneys are the source of all our Yin & Yang in the body. Yin being our moisture (Water) and Yang our warmth (Fire). It is important that these are supported in the Winter. In Winter be Mindful to: Drink plenty of water (room temperature at coolest) or herbal teas - 8 - 10 glasses per day. Winter is a drying season and water is crucial to the body. Keep warm, particularly your lumbar area. Wear singlets, thermals or lumbar warmers. Cold can invade around the neck and shoulders, wear a scarf and keep this area covered. Eat warm, slow cooked stews, casseroles and soups. Come into SANA and have some moxibustion. A wonderfully warming herb that is burnt and held over certain acupuncture points to deliver Yang to the channels and organs, expelling Cold and supporting the Kidney energy.
