25.01.2022 This week has been a whirlwind for all of us. , . Our associations have been working tirelessly to provide us with answers. The unfortunate news is that Remedial Massage and Myotherapy services have been suspended for the moment, without clear clarification for our practitioners we have decided to put this on hold until we know more. 23.01.2022 ? One of the questions we ask of all our clients on our intake form is: "How much sleep do you average a night?". This is a graphical representation of the answers given in the last few years. How much sleep should you be getting? ... The National Sleep Foundations recommendation for young adults (18-25 years) and adults (26-64 years) is between 7-9 hours. For athletic individuals, sleep is paramount when considering the training response, which requires a balance between stress, fatigue and recovery. In fact sleep is one of THE BEST recovery tools we have at our disposal. As you can see on this graph, only 11.6% of our new clients slept >8 hours, & almost half got less than 7 hours!! Why is sleep so important? Injury Milewski et als study on adolescent athletes found those who sleep on average less than 8 hours per night have 1.7 times greater risk of being injured than those who slept more than 8 hours Von Rosen et al found that sleeping more than 8 hours during a week reduced risk of injury by 61% in adolescent athletes Illness Reduced sleep quantity associated with increased incidence of illness in the next 7 days in competitive male AFL players Those who sleep <5 hrs 4.5 x more likely to suffer a cold vs those who sleep >7 hrs Performance Reductions in motor & cognitive performance, reaction times, & mood state/emotional stability are often observed in sleep-deprived athletes Poor sleep quality, has been identified as a marker of under recovery & an early sign of overreaching Brandt et als study revealed a relationship between poor sleep quality & lost matches during a competition Silva et al found a correlation between sleep duration & competition performance in elite gymnasts Napping improves running performance in endurance runners that had <7 hours sleep How to get better sleep? This is an alternative stretch to the rhomboid stretch that we've done earlier into the upper back series that is able to get a deeper and more effective pull on the rhomboids . Although given the funny perspective, the goal here is to loosen up your upper back, and in doing so, enable an increased range of motion through your shoulder joints... . Start with your hands in front of you on a wall then slowly creep your fingers away from each other towards opposite ends. Stop when you get a nice stretch going and hold there for 30 seconds, repeating 3 times, twice daily! . 18.01.2022 : Suffering from plantar fasciitis, tight shins (shin splints) or restless legs at night? Or even if you are going for long runs/walks each day. This is a great exercise you can do to increase the range of motion in your ankles and stretch out the muscles surrounding the joint. ... - Take a medium band and tie it to the bottom of a table leg or pole (something sturdy) - Step one foot into the band and place it over the front of your ankle (right in the crease) and put tension on the band - Have your legs in a split position as it is shown in the photo - Keeping your front heel on the ground, gently pulse your knee back and forth keeping tension on the band - Repeat for about 30 repetitions and then swap ? ! Grab your partner and get them to place the space between the thumb and index finger (creating an L shape with their hand) across the front of your ankle and push a little force into it. Then, repeat the steps above pulsing the knee forward and back. We know many of our members are meeting in parks and getting the home workouts done Motivation is not always there so create habits and routines that will set you up for success. 02.01.2022 : This is one of our favourite exercises at Sanctuary Lakes Chiropractic. This exercise unlocks so many issues we face. From poor posture, over training, sitting for too long, headaches etc. If you have a foam roller, get your hands on it. If you dont have a foam roller, roll up a towel, blanket or jumper. You will also need a broomstick or stretched out towel. - Place the roller horizontally across your mid back... - Place the broomstick into both hands with a widened grip - Keeping your bum on the ground, take your arms up over head and arch back over the roller. - Only go as far as you are comfortable - Bring your arms back and forth over your head slowly for 10-20 repetitions, aiming to get closer to the ground each time.
