25.01.2022 Jacob Nelson v Jake Rynne 24 all State Champion of Champion Singles Rd 1

23.01.2022 ...Have nothing against bikes or their riders but dont you wish this would happen to some of the local inconsiderate bike riders

23.01.2022 Sunday the 6th of December will see the Cherry Street Sandflies battle out to get their name on the prestigious Sandflies Triples Trophy. All names are drawn out of the hat for this event and its been going on since the Sandflies started in 1986 I think or a few years after. The trophy is running out of space to put the little plaques on for engraving the winners names. The old battle scarred trophy will be presented to the winners at the Christmas party on the 20th along wi...th other goodies. Got sent the names of the Teddy Chilton Singles winner and Runner-up yesterday by the Sandflies elite scorer and record holder, the one and only Johnny "LJ' Hooker. Bloody hard and time consuming job that as I had done it for around 8 years before 'LJ' took it over some 4 years ago. Before me Kermie did it for ages and its a thankless job that needs some sort of recognition I think! Week after, the 13th, is the Sandflies Remembrance Day. All passed Sandflies are remembered with a moments silence by attending members before bowls and then we continue the downward slide into Christmas and New Year and 2021! One thing that hasn't happen this year is a show on TV about Nostradamus predicting the COVID 19 Virus but it usually they come on after the event is over so maybe next year you think!...cheers...PK

21.01.2022 In the Northern Star this morning NEWS Schoolies floodgates open, Ballina accepts Melbourne flights Jetstar resumed flights between Victoria and Ballina today. ...(Photo: Archive) Jetstar resumed flights between Victoria and Ballina today. (Photo: Archive) Javier EncaladaJAVIER ENCALADA 24th Nov 2020 12:00 AM | Updated: 7:09 AM Subscriber only BIGGER jets, resumed flights, and new routes are set to bring more people than ever to the Northern Rivers through what has become the state's second busiest airport. After 133 days, Jetstar's direct flights between Melbourne and Ballina resumed, after restrictions eased in Victoria - just in time for Schoolies, which officially begins at Byron Bay on the weekend. An airline spokesman said: "For the rest of November, we'll operate 16 return flights between Ballina and Sydney, and six weekly return flights between Ballina and Melbourne," he said. "In December we'll ramp up our operations to operate up to 32 return weekly flights to and from Ballina." The airline operated Airbus 320 planes with a capacity of up to 186 passengers. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport general manager, Julie Stewart, welcomed the arrival. "It's wonderful to have our Victorian friends and families back in our fold, and we welcome all our Melbourne visitors," she said. "The airlines are adjusting their schedules almost daily, but you'll notice there are more flights now because we also have Fly Pelican doing the Canberra and the Dubbo services." Ms Stewart confirmed Ballina remained the second busiest airport in NSW, after Sydney. Qantas has also upgraded some of the aeroplanes flying between Sydney and Ballina, a spokesman confirmed. "In total we're operating 26 return services between Sydney and Ballina each week," he said. "10 of these are operated by our Boeing 737-800, which offers business and economy cabins, with 180 seats on board. The rest of the flights are operating predominantly by our 72 seater Q400 aircraft." A Virgin Australia spokeswoman also confirmed extra seats in the coming weeks for Ballina services. "Virgin Australia is pleased to be adding more services between Sydney and Ballina over the busy Christmas and New Year period, with an additional 10,000 seats available so Australians can enjoy a well-deserved holiday," she said. Ms Stewart said the airport continued with strict COVID-safety measures. "Ballina is still operating as a COVID-safe airport, so we still have all our practices in place: we still have temperature testing, hand sanitiser, we are asking people to wear masks when it's busy, and we are restricting the terminal to just passengers," she said.

20.01.2022 ...just in time for Christmas!

19.01.2022 ...meet our new neighbour!

17.01.2022 Here is the report that went to the Northern Star, Northern Rivers Times and the Northern Rivers Review. The last Sunday in November was a bruiser with 33c backing down however again the Sandflies were saved by the northeaster sea breeze. With nice cold beer on tap not far from the green along with plenty of water make thing bearable. The Sandflies have built up the ranks again after the other joint shut shop and we moved home to the Ballina Premier and only Bowling Club, Che...rry Street Sports, another new member joined up on Sunday which is great to see. Winners on Sunday were Frank Renner, Tarts and They call me Bruce getting up in a close 14 to 11 against Alfredo Garcia, Allan Britt and Kenny Arthur. Runners up were John Dennis, Gary Devlin and Warren Thatcher going down 16 to 20 against Sharky, Peter Tootell and Preso Johnny Harley. A moments silence was held for Peter Ives who passed away and President John passes his condolences to Peter’s family and friends on behalf of the Sandflies. Next week is the Sandflies triples where all names are picked out of the hat so all are requested to be at the club earlier thanks. Till next week take care fellas. See more

17.01.2022 ...some truth in this!

15.01.2022 ...and not a ratbag in sight with the champion Greenkeepers from our Far North Coast area or when the photo was taken at Evans Head Bowling Club who were holding Greenkeepers Day on the 24th of October 2017. These fellas all work hard at giving us bowlers excellent greens to play on all year round. Lawn bowls just wouldn't be the same without them!

14.01.2022 Getting a bit on the warm side as we head into summer and as usual the local sea breeze came up to make life easy as. Without that sea breeze it would have been a very hot day of it and thats for sure. Inching towards Christmas seems like something is missing to me. Maybe because of the lock down and stuff but not in the Christmas mood yet but hopefully it will arrive as we all love Christmas dont we and the Sandflies have there little party organised with a roast lunch and a... few beers. Certainly gets the members on deck that you only see once a year and expect the world but you get that. Buggered if I could do it and possibly the way I was brought up like most us. Winners on Sunday morning were Keith Spearing, Allan Britt and Preso Johnny Harley getting up by one point 21 to 20 over Larry James, Johnny Fullerstuff and Col Pittman and wonder who done the card! Runners up was a 22 to 8 with Roger the Yank, Gary Devlin and Kenny Arthur having a bad hair day against John Dennis, Mal Lowe who is on fire at the moment and Stewie Weller. On Sunday morning President Johnny Harley sent his best wishes to Peter Ives who is very ill. I think Peter joined the Sandflies early in the peace not long after they started according to the old minutes book. We hope Peter is comfortable and no doubt in good hands. Not sure if Santa can make it this year with the COVID 19 affair but you can assure he will make it to all the kids big and small as he does each year so we dont mind sharing him on this occasion to keep Christmas special for for the little ones. But you never know he may just appear but rules are rules even for Santa Clause....cheers...PK

10.01.2022 ...as Irish as it gets...

10.01.2022 ...its a Ford so I didn't like the stopping bit!

09.01.2022 36c as the predicted weather for Sunday but we again were saved by the local Northeaster breeze which was more to the east coming straight of Cherry Street for a change. Sunday was the Sandflies Triples Trophy Day and overall winners on the day are going on the Trophy and the normal winners drawn out of the hat were Dasher, Norm Mulholland and Col Pittman getting up 22 to 14 against John Dennis, Gary Devlin and Kenny Arthur and both side were on rink 10. All trophy's are in ...getting engraved and will be presented at the Christmas party on the 20th by Preso Johnny Harley. A few other trophy's will be given on the day also including the Teddy Chilton Singles winner with the final result coming in from the Sandflies consistency results scorer Johnny 'LJ' Hooker who does a great job with that and about time he has been recognized for that thankless job with most wouldn't even know he does it! Last years winner for the singles trophy was Peter Connick. Sad news with Uncle Fester's sister passing away over the weekend. Must be a relief for the poor old families when their precious one's are very sick for some time and finally pass. It will be a day to celebrate when they come up with a cure for that dreaded cancer however a bit late for Garry's family who have lost two lovely beautiful ladies to the bloody cancers. The Sandflies have Remembrance Day next Sunday were the Sandflies remember all the passed members. I think there has been 152 deceased members with the first one I have on the list being Donny Brydon back in 1988 and the latest one that I know of is Peter Ives who passed away just recently. Some famous Ballina characters in that lot and some not so famous but all good men just the same...cheers...PK

09.01.2022 ...have a go at this!

08.01.2022 Here is the report that was sent to th e Northern Star, Northern Rivers Times and the Northern Rivers Review's Bowls section of there papers. A touch of luck and things were not as hot as predicted as the 36c turned into a 30c thank you very much! One felt the heat but it was helped away by the 15km sea breeze again. Some sad news over the weekend with Uncle Fester’s sister passing away after a hard time with that cursed wally dancer and it was a matter of time for the poor d...ear. Also Alex Virag, organiser for the Woopie Wonderers from Woolgoolga passed away in his sleep which was a shock to all down that ways. You never know what’s around the cornet for anyone so enjoy your family and bowls while its there for us getting older types. Winners and runners up on Sunday were on the same rink and the weekly champs were Dasher, Norm Mulholland and Col Pittman getting up 22 to 14 against John Dennis, Gary Devlin and Kenny Arthur. The winners of the Sandflies Triples which Sundays game was all about will be announced at the Christmas party held on the 20th at Ballina’s Premier and only Bowling Club, Cherry Street Sports. Next week we have the annual Sandflies remembrance Day where a moments silents is held for our departed members with the last entry being Peter Ives who passed away around 2 weeks ago. Till next week take care fellas. See more

03.01.2022 ...Ballina legend who has turned 50 not out. Hard working Cherry Street Sports Greenkeeper Duncan has hit half a ton and well done to him and his family getting him this far in life. Never one to shy away from the Tooheys Old and them flamein legless White Russian's drinks and not to mention a Black Sambuca which he has made traditional before the bus trip on every Greenkeepers Day. A champion in all ways of life and ofcause the Sandflies wish him a very Happy Special 50th Birthday...cheers boss

03.01.2022 Here is the report that was sent to the Northern Star, The Norther Rivers Times and the Northern Rivers Review for the bowls section in their papers...cheers...PK Would have been a scorcher without it but out west around Mungindi its supposed to be 40 odd in the shade so that sound like real pub weather to me and that is The Jolly Swagman. Talking about Mungindi a small bus full of sandflies head out that way each year and was supposed to be the Mungindi Cup this year in Jul...y but that was all cancelled due to the bug but we are booked in again next year so looking forward to that on the first Saturday in July as its one hell of a day and real county races it thats you love story. Meanwhile back home The Sandflies winners on the day were Keith Spearing, Allan Britt and Preso John Harley getting up with a close 21 to 20 against visitor Larry James, Johnny Fullerstuff and Col Pittman. Runners up was 22 to 8 with Roger the Yank, Gary Devlin and Kenny Arthur having a bad hair day against John Dennis, Mal Lowe who is on fire at the moment and the youthful Stewie Weller. Home game next week and Sandflies Triples is on the 6th of December, Remembrance Day on the 13th and Christmas Party on the 20th.
