25.01.2022 Protect Yourself from Acoustic Shock A sudden loud sound, even of a short duration, can cause tremendous structural damage to the inner ear. Examples of such incidents include: 1. Sudden loud sounds from a telephone 2. Sudden loud sounds from a speaker, such as at a music concert... 3. Fire/ burglar alarms 4. Explosions 5. A child screaming or a dog barking close to your ear Following an acoustic shock incident, you may experience an earache, a burning sensation to your face and head, tinnitus, reduced hearing, a fluttering noise in your ear, an ear blockage sensation and/or you become hypersensitive to sounds. In some cases, stress and anxiety problems may develop. Digital acoustic shock protection telephones are available to help protect phone users from damage caused by acoustic shock. 24.01.2022 Hearing loss in children Non-invasive hearing screening is performed on most of the newborn babies in Queensland before the baby leaves the hospital. However, hearing loss can acquire after birth. The most common causes of hearing loss include earwax accumulation, ear infection, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Otitis Media Effusion and head/ear injury. How can I tell if my child might have a hearing loss? Check your child for ear discharge, ear discomfort or ear bleeding due to... injury. Ask your doctor to check for earwax. Other symptoms include wanting the television louder than usual, misunderstanding directions, asking for repeats, slow in speech and language development. How does hearing loss affect my child? Children develop their speech and communication skills through listening and talking with other people. The first few years of life are especially critical for this development. However, in many cases, the conditions are not obvious and may be overlooked by the parents and other professionals for weeks and even months. If you have concerns about your childs hearing, talk to your family doctor. Paediatric audiology assessment is available in Sandgate Hearing. 20.01.2022 Memory Loss and Hearing Aids The 2019 Audiology Conference in Brisbane focused on the cognition and hearing. There were many important messages and new ideas which can be applied to clinical practice. One such message according to the recent World Health Organisation Expert Panel Report 2019 is that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of hearing aids to reduce the risk of cognitive decline/dementia. Therefore, you should be cautious if you are asked to purchase ...hearing aids to treat dementia. There is currently no cure and no effective medication for treating memory loss or dementia, however there are ways to delay the onset of symptoms. The more you strengthen the "6 pillars" in your daily life, the longer your brain will stay active and healthy. The 6 Pillars are - 1: Regular exercise, 2: Social engagement, 3: Healthy diet, 4: Mental stimulation, 5: Quality sleep and 6: Stress management. As an audiologist, I understand that significant hearing loss can limit a person's social engagement leading to frustration and isolation. Wearing hearing aids doesn't necessarily guarantee to slow down one's cognitive decline. But improving your hearing allows you to engage in a more active lifestyle, exposing you to health mental stimulation which in turn, protects your memory function. See more

17.01.2022 Top 5 tips to get the best results from your hearing aid 1. Keep your Hearing Aid Clean and Dry Daily For the hearing aid to function properly, there must be no obstruction in the sound input (microphone) or in the sound outlet. Very often an obstruction is caused by earwax or moisture issues. Pay attention to the microphone, wax filter, the earhook and the earmould tubing. These are the common places where the blockage can occur. 2. Battery Supplies In order to ensure that ...the hearing aid receives the necessary electric energy, a good quality battery is a must. All new batteries should be kept separately. New batteries should never be in direct contact with another battery or other metal part. At Sandgate Hearing we stock keyring size battery testers for checking your batterys condition. 3. Free of Earwax Blockages As you wear hearing aid daily, you may be unaware of earwax slowly building up inside your ear. Your ear canal size can change as you age and from years of wearing a hearing aid. This change can affect your hearing aid efficiency with your hearing aid fitting becoming loose and in some cases causing hearing aid whistle. See an audiologist or doctor to inspect your ears regularly. We also provide earwax removal. 4. Book to see your audiologist regularly Our hearing naturally deteriorates over time. Hearing aids are electronic devices and their performance will slowly deteriorate too. It is important to see your audiologist at least once a year to check your hearing aid and make adjustments to suit your hearing needs. 5. Hearing and Understanding are Different Hearing aids using factory settings allow you to detect/hear the sounds. Being able to understand the meaning of the information carried by the sounds (speech) is very different. Unlike eyeglasses, which, when put on provide immediate, positive results, hearing loss affects at least five different dimensions of sound receptions. In addition, auditory memory and central cognitive function play a role in speech understanding. An experience audiologist can help you find the best possible hearing system and program your hearing aid to the best possible settings for maximum benefits. If you have been wearing your hearing aid for a while but still unsatisfied with the results, see an audiologist and explain how you feel.

13.01.2022 How does earwax build-up affect you? It is one of the most common ear problems. The presence of earwax can not only reduce your hearing, but also cause itchiness, a blocked ear sensation and can cause your hearing aids to work inefficiently. We perform a micro-suction procedure to remove soft earwax. If your earwax is hard, eardrops are required for a week or two to soften the wax. This procedure is performed safely using a microscope to magnify the ear canal. No water is used in this procedure. We provide this free, courtesy service to our existing clients and to new clients having a hearing assessment. Otherwise, just a small fee is charged for this procedure.
