25.01.2022 #OTD: Donald Bradman joins the RAAF Did you know that Sir Donald Bradman served in the RAAF and Australian Army? On the 28th of June 1940, Australian crickete...r Donald Bradman joined the RAAF Reserve and was passed fit for air crew duty. However, owing to an oversupply of RAAF recruits, Bradman was convinced by the Governor General of Australia at the time, Lord Gowrie, to transfer to the Army instead. Commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant, Bradman was posted to the Army School of Physical Training in Frankston to act as divisional supervisor of physical training Interestingly, despite his batting prowess, a routine army test revealed that Bradman had poor eyesight. Unfortunately, the demanding nature of the job aggravated his existing muscular problems and in June 1941 Bradman was invalidated out of service as a result of his existing chronic pains. He spent months recuperating, unable to even shave himself or comb his hair. Despite his muscular injuries, Bradman continued to play cricket and as they say, the rest is history ------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. How could he tell her he’d had to return his police horse when he left his job as a tracker, or that he’d been ordered to shoot the horse he had ridden into battle in the Middle East? That horse was one of the famous ‘Walers’ of the First World War. A tracker from country NSW, Archie Tracker Murphy was one of the thousands of Indigenous Australians who served during the First and Second World Wars.
