08.01.2022 Note Stanger danger & online gaming story Hi everyone, ... I just wanted to give a shout out to parents and any young people out there who are playing or allowing their children to play the popular game at the moment; Among Us. It is such an addictive game (coming from someone who doesn’t play these games often) but, I just wanted to tell a story about an encounter I had online this evening while playing on public servers. Under the alias of Noodles, I was playing along with others on public servers, when I saw an encounter happen between two players that really concerned me. There have been several occassions where players, under fake names, were asking other players for their personal details, such as their names, their ages, and their numbers and social media details. Obviously, this is a concern, as many young people, especially children, are on this platform at the moment, and may feel swayed to give their personal details to essentially, a stranger on the internet. Especially if it’s with a player they’ve built a rapport with. Please ensure you supervise your children when playing this game, and if not, I would strongly encourage an open and calm discussion about staying safe and discreet online with strangers. It seems like a harmless game on the surface, but rest assured, you can never be too sure of who you’re speaking to on the other side of the screen. Downloading the app, learning the game, and finding fellow players is relatively easy and quick. And, there is a written chat function, so easy to strike up a convo with another player and easy to screenshot any personal details exhanged. So ensure your children are aware of stranger danger online, staying discreet and ensuring they DO NOT give out any personal or identifiable information to strangers online. Thanks for reading everyone. As an educator to children and a youth worker, my priority will always be the safety and well-being of children and young people. So I felt it was my duty of care to remind the wonderful parents and young people I have here. Please feel free to share. Enjoy the game (as I am ) and please be safe. Alyce - S&H Youth
