25.01.2022 Our collection delivered another gem last week. As we digitise more and more of our collection, we get to revisit manuscripts which may not have been touched in... years - and they often send us down a rabbit warren of research! These books first attracted our eye for the beautiful marbling on the cover & endpapers, but the contents are fascinating and had us hooked rather rapidly. These are Leave of Absence Books from what we believe to be the early Public Works Office. They record each absence the men in the "dredge Men" team took. It's a fascinating insight into a) how HR administration was once recorded - long before HR departments existed! And b) it led us down a rabbit hole of questions, was this paid leave? what were the entitlements for these Dredge Men back at the turn of the 20th century? So we're off with a bit of archive fever, filling in the gaps, finding out the stories these treasures hold, so our digitised record can contain as much information as possible!

24.01.2022 Virtual Tour: Tram 14 (and 26) in Wendouree Parade. Tram 14 is another Meadowbank tram from Sydney, built in 1915 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust. Aft...er service in Melbourne the tram was sold to Geelong, where it ran from 1928-1936 as Tram 29. It was then moved to Ballarat, renumbered as 14, and continued in service until 1971. This tram was given to the City of Ballarat, who then placed it into the care of the Museum. See more

23.01.2022 Lest we forget - For those who gave their lives so we could live ours. It's not just human soldiers who fought for their country. Millions of horses and other ...animals also served during wartime, and one special photo shows just how much their human counterparts appreciated the war horses and their sacrifice. The touching black and white photo is believed to have been taken by officers of the Auxiliary Remount Dept. No.326 in Camp Cody, New Mexico in 1915. The image shows about 650 soldiers standing in a formation that, from above, resembles a cavalry horse's head, neck, and bridle -- a true tribute from the soldiers to the many horses who fought, and often died, by their side in the Great War. While horses have served in many other wars, the large number of horses killed in WWI was staggering; about eight million horses, and countless mules, and donkeys were lost in the war. The U.S. Army and the British Army both used mounted infantry while Germany stopped sending them to the Western Front early on in the war. The horses suffered terrible conditions, and were killed most often on the front lines by machine gun fire and gas attacks. Horses and their counterparts also helped carry food, water, ammunition, gas masks and medical supplies in supply wagons over long distances and rough terrain to the allied forces on the front lines. www.wideopenpets.com

23.01.2022 The Virtual Tour, No. 22: This is Cuthberts 939, which started life in 1948 as an SW6 Melbourne tram. It has a brief cameo role in the movie "Malcolm". In 1994 ...it was converted into a restaurant car for the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant and finally retired in May 2012. The Museum acquired the tram in 2014 and with the help of a State Government grant, it was refurbished and returned to service in May 2016. As the only espresso tram in the world, it has been popular with visitors enjoying coffee and cake, or wining and dining while cruising smoothly along our historic tramway, Sadly, while social distancing is in place, the intimate experience that this tram offers is not available. 23.01.2022 Virtual Tour 13: This tram has the same history as 26 and 27, originally being built by Duncan and Fraser in 1916 for the Hawthorn Tramway Trust. It arrived in ...Ballarat in 1930. It has been repainted in the Electric Supply Company colours of the 1930s. This was one of the original six trams that were given to the Museum in 1971. In the photo taken in September 2018, Motorman Neville is being assisted with the trolley pole by several young enthusiasts, complete with their teddies. See more

23.01.2022 FlInders Street Station Ballroom. Located high above the station's platforms, the charming, yet derelict ballroom was once one of Melbourne's thriving cultural ...hubs. Years without maintenance had left the ballroom in decay, with water leaking from the roof allowing ornate plaster decoration to fall from the ceiling and the parquetry floorboards to lift and peel. The once grand Ballroom held dance classes, ballroom competitions and concerts with the capacity to seat 400 people. During WWII, dances were held for Allied servicemen and in the 50s and 60s, it was one of the most popular dance halls in Melbourne. The last dance was held on September 10th 1983 and it has since been closed off to the public. In 2019 the State government announced a plan to restore the old ballroom and other derelict parts of the building with a view to reopening the space.

18.01.2022 Virtual Tour 15: Almost forgotten, and at the back of the storage shed is Tram 32. Like Tram 33, it was built for the Hawthorn Tramway Trust, purchased incomple...te by the Footscray Tramway Trust, but first operated by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board c.1919/1920. This tram came to Ballarat in 1935. At the close of the tramway, it went to the Maryborough Wildlife Park, and finally returned to Ballarat to be used for mechanical parts in 1986. However, since then, the decision has been made to preserve the tram for a future restoration project. See more

17.01.2022 Today we will start a Virtual Tour of the Museum's collection of tram cars. No. 1, was built in Adelaide in 1887 by Duncan and Fraser. It was operated by the Ba...llaarat Tramway Company from 1887 to 1903. It was then used by the Electric Supply Co. on the Sebastopol line until 1913. After being used as a trailer, the tram was sold in the 1920s. It was returned to the Museum in 1987 and restored to working condition. See more

14.01.2022 This red brick building is in Sandringham at the end of the railway. I am wondering if you know if it was the loco shed when Sandringham became the end of that line in 1887, until the electrification of the railway in 1919. We know it was used as a tram depot and then a bus depot.

14.01.2022 Take a look at this historic tram and car.

13.01.2022 Virtual Tour No. 4. The advantage of a virtual tour is being able to go places which are normally not accessible. Tram 11 is currently held in off-site storage ...awaiting eventual restoration. Built in in Sydney by Meadowbank Engineering in 1915, it operated as Tram No. 65 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust, and then as "J" class 65 for the Melbourne Metropolitan Tramways Board. In 1928 it was sold to the Melbourne Electric Supply Company to operate in Geelong as Tram 28. In 1936 the SEC moved the tram to Ballarat where it was renumbered as No.11. After the closure of the Ballarat Tramway in 1971, the tram (without motors) was given to the Daylesford and District Historical Society. It was acquired by the BTM in 1977. See more

After more than 60 years cleaning the Melbourne tracks, it was acquired by the Museum. The original Ballarat scrubber car is in the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria's collection at Bylands. 06.01.2022 Virtual Tour 12: Tram 27 was the first tram operated by the Ballarat Tramway Museum when it started services in 1974. Built for the Hawthorn Tramway Trust by Du...ncan and Fraser in 1916, it became No. 10, renumbered as 116 by the MMTB. It was sold to the Electric Supply Company in Ballarat in 1930, becoming No. 27. In 1934 the SEC closed in the open sides as part of the conversion to being able to operate the trams without a conductor. The tram has been back to Melbourne in 1982 and 1983 as part of the Australia Day Cavalcade of historic trams. The tram has been painted in its 1930s colours. In this photo from December 2015, the tram was decorated to carry Santa and his Elf. See more

04.01.2022 Several people on this site were interested in the history of the Beaumaris tram services. I have had this book for many decades (I only paid 75 cents for it w...hen I bought it)! It is long out of print, so I have put it up here for your interest. If you have trouble reading or downloading it, send me a PM and I'll help you. Here is the direct link to get it. https://1drv.ms/b/s!AkumDrYrDnSF8FpNfz5de6zQRxI-?e=6hYYyV This is a map from one of the pages. The book is primarily about the St Kilda to Brighton service but the Beaumaris area services are in it as well.
