25.01.2022 Day #4 of my Facebook Ceramic Art Challenge. Thanks to Jane Sawyer and Demi Hidemi Tokutake who nominated me to post artwork every day on Facebook. Following from my involvement with tea and tea ware, I sometimes arrange pieces to juxtapose forms and colours as a way of creating a sense of poise, stillness and serenity. They are little sculptures where the individual elements add up to something more eloquent than the individual components. Today I invite friend and maker Prue Venables who has such as sophisticated sensibility and appreciation of stillness and contemplation.

21.01.2022 FACEBOOK WORDS Day #1 of my Facebook Ceramic Art Challenge. Thanks to Jane Sawyer and Demi Hidemi Tokutake who nominated me to post one artwork every day on Facebook for 7 days, and choose another artist each day. What a challenge choosing how to tell a story here! I have decided to dip into a few areas of my practice show the various aspects of my relationship to clay. A few years ago I enrolled in a PhD program. My aim was to spend time trying to understand why I was so eng...aged by particular objects, surfaces and materials. Throughout my life I have been drawn to nature worn patination in objects, buildings and landscapes. My research journey took me to many places, metaphorically, and literally. Museums in various countries, archaeological digs off the north of Scotland, and reading, making and thinking in relation to how I relate to materials and how I approach making. Neolithic artefacts seemed to express something elemental in the human relationship to materials and making. In many ways their approach and sensibility was somehow close to mine. So I made some works that intersected with Neolithic making to see what this may tell me. Today I would like to invite my salt glaze soul sisterLinda Christiansen from Minnesota See more

16.01.2022 Day #2 of my Facebook Ceramic Art Challenge. Thanks to Jane Sawyer and Demi Hidemi Tokutake who nominated me to post one artwork every day on Facebook On Orkney off the north of Scotland I encountered standing stones. They were in huge formal arrangements such as at the Ring of Brodgar or in less grand informal arrangements that were just standing in farmers fields. I also visited the ring near Stonehenge in Avesbury. Images do not do justice to the monumental power of these ...artefacts set resolutely in the landscape echoing so eloquently through time. I began to wonder what lay behind them in both metaphorical and physical terms. Cutting and moving huge stones many kilometers and then standing them up. What’s behind all this? They spoke to me of humanity and our ontological drive for meaning through making that has come down to us today. So I made some works to explore and express what lies below the surface. I used inclusions as a metaphor for things hidden that can become exposed and tell us something through their emergence. They also mark my engagement with the ancient and patinated. Today I would like to nominate Neil Hoffmann to join the challenge. Neil is a generous and creative colleague and friend. His work is strong and inspirational. It allows the material to speak for itself and remind us of our antecedence. See more

04.01.2022 Day #3 of my Facebook Ceramic Art Challenge. Thanks to Jane Sawyer and Demi Hidemi Tokutake who nominated me to post one artwork every day on Facebook. In 1998 I as invited to make work for a show called ‘Australian Crafts for Tea’ at the Australian embassy in Tokyo. It started a journey that continues today. In order to understand the context of tea ceremony ware I briefly studied tea ceremony at the Urasenke tea school in Sydney. It gave me a context for understanding the s...ignificance of these vessels and the meaning of tea that centered around the settling of the mind. Making these pots enabled me to approach making them in a purposeful way. This has involved much experimentation and testing. Only keeping the very best. Editing and editing, seeking some subtlety some serendipity, some chance special qualities that speak of eloquent stillness and contemplation. Teabowls, cha-ire and mizusashi have been companions on my journey of discovery. Today I invite potter and musician Akira Satake, a teabowl a maker of great sensitivity and talent to join me in the challenge. See more
