06.01.2022 WORLD'S FIRST MANGO AUTO-HARVESTER One of the mango industry's biggest issues is finding enough workers to pick fruit during the hottest months of the yea...r. At the National Mango Conference in Darwin this week, growers have been shown a possible solution! Developed by Central Queensland University, the world's first mango auto-harvester is set to play a major role in the industry's future, according to Professor Kerry Walsh. "The auto-harvester has the potential to solve some of the major labour force issues that currently limit the industry," he said. "Getting labour to turn up on the day and willing to pick fruit in the heat of summer, while dealing with acidic mango sap, is a tough job. "The industry has automated the packhouse, which is in the shade, so taking the technology out into the field is the logical next step." The auto-harvester was trialled in Queensland during the mango season just gone, where it was mounted on a trailer towed by a ute. The next phase of research will investigate options for it to be mounted on a terrestrial drone to operate autonomously, at faster speeds and higher accuracies. Central Queensland University
