25.01.2022 Planting is now underway, slightly delayed by rain and machinery issues. This week we planted four varieties of tomatoes, dill, beetroot, coriander, okra, lettuce, pakchoi, tatsoi, rocket, malukhia and spring onions. It's a mixture of hot cold climate vegies, because we have found that the change in our climate means winter is pretty warm these days.

24.01.2022 Our brand new driveway basking in the sunset. We can now invite people in without a four-wheel drive vehicle. Thanks to Shane Beardmore.

24.01.2022 A little python found its way into the chookhouse. Usually, pythons don't bother the chickens and can be useful in keeping rodents under control. This one spent yesterday with the chooks and was gone by this morning.

24.01.2022 A delicious lunch of gluten free pasta with cabbage sauce, made from red cabbages that have been in storage since October. We miss our plentiful supply of own-grown veggies, since we made it our practice to stop growing vegetables in Summer. But we still have some.

23.01.2022 Right on schedule, the poinciana tree in front is coming into flower as Summer moves in.

23.01.2022 Every Autumn we crank up the farm again for another cool season of vegies. And everytime, I await with some trepidation to see the transformation from an empty field to a field of plenty. And every time it is magic. This picture highlights the green kale which is looking beautiful. We will be bringing plenty of green and black kale, along with otger fresh, organic vegies to #northeystreetorganicmarket... tomorrow #northeystreetmarkets #n See more

20.01.2022 I was out in the field tending our ginger and turmeric when Willie the wagtail dropped in to wish me increased wealth and happiness in the year of the planigale, or long-tailed marsupial mouse. I would like to join Willie in wishing everyone more of what they want and less of what they don't want in the year ahead.

19.01.2022 Enjoying a beautiful Autumn day out in the field. Our ginger and turmeric crops are coming along nicely, helped along by alternating sunshine and showers.

19.01.2022 The hovea acutifolia is in bloom. These small purple flowers for me mark the middle of Winter and the promise of Spring just around the corner.

18.01.2022 We are just about ready for Autumn planting to start next month. All 50 rows have been deep-ripped, spread with compost and hoed.

18.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all. We hope you enjoy a holiday and a great start to the new year. We have received the gift of a couple of rainy days, and the promise of more. We are grateful, and can only wish everyone could be as lucky.

15.01.2022 We are pleased to announce the arrival of 20 fluffy little chicks. They are just a few weeks old, so it will take more time in the kindergarten before they are ready to join their parents in the big house. We are especially happy to have these little bundles of joy, because half of them are the offspring of our free range flock.

13.01.2022 We have just begun harvesting the new crop of ginger. It looks great after the wet weather of the past month, on top of the mild Summer. We will be sending some to Northey Street Farmers Market with David and Julia of Coochin Hills Organics. #northeystreetmarkets #coochinhillsorganics #organicginger

13.01.2022 The D'Entrecasteaux Channel presents a peaceful scene from our residence in Dover this morning.

12.01.2022 Bubble likes to watch the magpies bathing.

11.01.2022 "Your soil is good enough to raise babies on, " said a visitor to Sandy Creek last week. That may be exaggeration. But I know it's good enough to raise food.

10.01.2022 The sugarloaf show off the spiral formation common to all cabbages. They are also wonderfully sweet and juicy.we will have a lot of them at Northey Street Organic Market tomorrow. #Northey #northeystorganicmarket #northeystreetorganicmarket

09.01.2022 We will be back at #northeystreetorganicmarket tomorrow morning, sharing the stall with our neghbours Coochin Hills Organics. We are still building up to full production. Though we have lettuce, Asian greens, herbs, ginger and turmeric. We hope to be able to say hello to friends, even if at a distance. #northeystreetmarkets #organicfood

09.01.2022 Next to our sugarloaf, I am picking beetroot. They are getting big and sweet and juicy as well, although of course in a very different way from the cabbages. Even an old farmer can learn new tricks and I began growing big beetroot only after I followed the advice of Amanda. One of the peculiarities of beetroot us that it produces seed pods and you can't thin them until they germinate. For a long time I refused to thin them and kept on producing small misshapen beets. Now I follow the advice of Amanda, who helped us on the farm a few years ago, and the results are as you see them.

06.01.2022 Autumn is almost here. The compost is spread, the rows are hoed and we're just about ready for another season growing vegies.

05.01.2022 Two weeks later and the chicks are now gawky adolescents. They are almost always hungry and they enjoy their version of crowd-surfing. Without a runup they launch themselved feet first onto a nearby group, knocking their family members all over the place.

03.01.2022 We are back home. The poinciana is putting on a show, and the heat is on. We will take some time to reorganise and reset. Then we will be preparing for the next season. @ Sandy Creek Organic Farm

02.01.2022 We will be back @northeystorganicmarket on Sunday for the first time this year. We hope to catch up with all of our market friends. The field is filling up and some of the vegies are ready to harvest. We will bring them to market and see if anyone remembers us.
