21.01.2022 On this day 32 years ago, Allan Rendell a 31yo volunteer firefighter of Illawong Brigade tragically lost his life fighting a bush fire in the Royal National Par...k. It was Sunday 16th October 1988, crews were working along Lady Carrington Drive consolidating a containment along the western edge of the fire. October 1988 was both warm and dry. 7 days were recorded with a temperature of over 30c and remarkably no rain fell during the month. It was around 8pm when a large tree near the fires edge fell on the cabin of the fire tanker where Allan was located. Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues, Allan was lost. The fire (area pictured) was later contained after burning 6500ha of the Royal National Park from Garie though to Bundeena. Today marks the anniversary of a local volunteer who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting their community. Today we remember Allan and are thinking of his family, friends and firefighting colleagues.

06.01.2022 This year on behalf of the Sutherland Shire Bush Fire Management Commitee, I am again leading a review of the local Bush Fire Risk Management Plan. The review ...process involves close collaboration with land managers, fire agencies, and other key stakeholders, with the focus to mitigate the risk of bush fire. This is an important opportunity to enhance and refine our existing plan, addressing how we will treat bush fire risk across the Sutherland Shire for the coming 5 years. An important component of the process is feedback from the community. The review group recently released a media release which I share below. This includes how you can make comment and share your thoughts. ‘The Sutherland Shire Bush Fire Management Committee has commenced a review into the local Bush Fire Risk Management Plan, which is a legislative requirement to do so every five (5) years. The Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is a strategic document that identifies community assets at risk and sets out a five-year program of coordinated multi-agency treatments, with the aim of reducing bush fire risk to the local area. Over the previous five years, land managers, fire agencies and other relevant stakeholders have been implementing important works including other initiatives, congruent with the plans intent, thus mitigating the risk in our ‘very high’ to ‘extreme’ risk areas. The importance of the having a robust plan was highlighted during April 2018, when a large bush fire affected the Menai area - a combination of measures implemented before the fire resulted in minimal damage or loss occurring to the community. BFMC Chair Len Carter said an essential component in reviewing and updating the plan is input from the community. It is the community who are often most at risk from bush fire due to proximity to bushland, and getting their input is a valuable part of the process. Whist public exhibition of the draft plan will occur later, the Bush Fire Management Committee is also seeking input from the community to capture their important perspective early in the planning process. Comments relating to bush fire management in the Sutherland Shire can be provided by emailing [email protected] with feedback closing on 1 December 2020’.
