25.01.2022 My clever friend made a thing and it's a clever thing! There are lots of good reasons why plain English writing is a better option than formal sounding language for functional text like websites, social media, emails, manuals and anything someone is expected to understand. Plain English doesn't make you sound less smart. If anything, plain English makes you easier to understand because it doesn't include the distraction of words that the reader may not fully understand the m...eaning of or round-and-round language that doesn't get straight to the point. Enter the plain English dictionary! I'll definitely be bookmarking this and coming back to it the next time I'm tempted to use unnecessarily formal words. Thanks The Smarter Writer!
25.01.2022 One of the things I find the most rewarding, is working with clients over an extended period as I have with the Australian Controlled Traffic Farming Association. The project started about four years ago with a website upgrade from an old Joomla site that wasnt doing them any favours. Since then, its included a separate conference site with booking system for their annual controlled traffic farming conferences, new sections to accommodate a new magazine, a new podcast and a... new membership enrolment option. As a group, theyre always innovating and trying new things in a sector that is known for being conservative. I enjoy working with them, and in particular their Business Manager Graeme Currie so much, because he asks my opinion early on and really takes my advice on board. When you have wonderful clients like this, the work never seems very hard. https://www.actfa.net/
23.01.2022 Too bad not to share.
23.01.2022 If youve got a business website, when was the last time you checked to see if your contact form was working? Even if theyre set up correctly, contact forms can be temperamental and stop working without notice. Make a note in your diary for the same time each month to think about whether youve had emails from your form recently. If not, log into your website and have a look to see if there have been any entries. Its for this reason that I recommend Gravity Forms for Wordp...ress, because even if your form stopped sending notifications to you, all the entries its received will stored in the back end of your website, available to download in Excel format. #wordpress #website #gravityforms See more
23.01.2022 What a fantastic list!
22.01.2022 This week a project went live, that I'd been working on with a client for several months. What started out as a website refresh ended up as a complete brand overhaul, from something called Longwave Wealth to a new brand called Real Life Financial Planning. The images below show his new about page, new home page and his previous home page (with the three circles on it). What I loved about this project, was how much time, energy and enthusiasm the client was prepared to put in...to the project, and the enormous amount of faith he put in me, by continuing to follow where I led. https://reallifefinancialplanning.com.au/
21.01.2022 BEWARE this spam email is doing the rounds again. Looks really legitimate, but its not so dont click on links.
21.01.2022 Im a retro girl at heart and Ive often thought I was born in the wrong time. How cute is this? Keep going until the last image - gold.
20.01.2022 This probably explains why the process of getting the content for your new website written - either by yourself or someone else - helps really clarify what your business does.
20.01.2022 For ages I've been recommending Siteground to clients who want to host their own websites and it's where I host mine too. I recently discovered WPMUDEV through their amazing suite of Wordpress plugins. Based on this article it looks as though they're getting some pretty great results on their hosting too, might be worth looking into, I think.
18.01.2022 Heres one for the copywriters who have yet to embrace the fabulousness of Excel. When youre doing keyword/ SEO page Information planning or writing, how much time do you waste counting characters on your SEO Page Titles and SEO Meta Descriptions until you get to the right number? A lot? Count no more, my wordy little friends.... If youre working in Excel, you can create a cell beside the one with your eg SEO Page Title in it, and insert the formula =LEN(E20), with E20 being the cell that your SEO Page Title is in, and Excel will very kindly count the characters for you and pop the right number right there in the box. 17.01.2022 To all those celebrities and big businesses who are changing their names or the names of their products in response to #BLM, just bloody stop it, its getting embarrassing. Except the people at Coon Cheese here in Australia, you carry on, a name change was well overdue for you. Changing a name helps nobody. Want to do something constructive? Use your considerable influence and the **many thousands** of dollars youll be spending on rebranding (which will be spent with nobody... who is meant to be benefitting from the allegedly good thing that youre doing ie. top-end-of-town marketing agencies) and do something useful that will benefit people wherever you are in the world, who are caught up in a spiral that ends with crime or violence. The kind of life thats virtually impossible to lift yourself up out of. With women and children being on the receiving end of the worst of it. I dont know what money needs to be spent to get the needle moving in the opposite direction to give people better options, but I do know it matters who you ask. For Gods sake, dont ask the politicians or anyone with a vested interest in the outcome. Ask the school principals, the teachers, the social workers, the youth workers, the police. The people who have some idea of what good can be done everywhere, to give people better options and a fighting chance at not becoming a statistic. If celebrities and big businesses really need to show the world that they care enough to do something meaningful, (some people cant resist a gold star from teacher) then that would be okay with me, as long as they know that it matters more WHAT GOOD THEY CAN DO, rather than how much good they can be seen to be doing.

16.01.2022 I just got a message from a web developer in the Netherlands, who came across a site I launched recently for a wonderful client, The Salon on the Boulevard in City Beach. He's writing a blog post titled Best Makeup Artist Websites of 2020 | 14 Inspiring Examples, and asked whether he could include this site at number 3. How cool is that?? He said, "Your website looks absolutely amazing, so I decided to include it in the list." ... Day officially made. Here's his article. https://mycodelesswebsite.com/makeup-artist-websites And here's the site https://www.the-salon.com.au/
16.01.2022 Today I got out of my activewear long enough to trundle down the road to the The Parkerville Tavern and join a room full of fabulous ladies at the first Perth Hills Women in Business networking morning tea shindig. Thank you to the organisers Colour me Kate, B Social Perth and Unlocking U - Morgan Holmes for a well run event - Ill definitely be back - and to our hosts, The Parkerville Tavern for allowing us to use your wonderful glass house! And lastly, thank you to our speaker Kate from The Hike Collective for a super talk.
15.01.2022 Improve conversion rates in your marketing by giving readers context to help them assess the value of your offer. Youre probably already spending a great deal ...of time agonising over the details - price, features - but if you nail the context, then the details pale into insignificance. #contextisking See more
15.01.2022 #freelancer #smallbusiness #marketing If theres a trend I see again and again when working with freelancers and solo business owners, its that they dont make it easy for potential clients to see the value of working with them, and indeed give them their money. This isnt about telling people how fabulous you are, but by making it clear that youre the right person for the job, and to be more specific, their job.
14.01.2022 Under the heading of cool tools, heres one I discovered today, to make online calculators and complex forms! Drag and drop with a free plan! To say that its cool would be an understatement, Ill be checking it out stat as there are plenty of applications for something that would previously have required a custom database.
13.01.2022 TIRED OF WORKING FOR SMALL BUSINESS CLIENTS WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY WANT? Digital creatives, like web designers, copywriters, graphic designers and photographe...rs who work with freelance or solo business clients, are often faced with projects where the client doesn’t seem to know what they want or need. These clients come looking for help after going around and around in circles, full of doubt about how they’re ever going to stand out from the crowd compared to all the other people out there offering similar services, many of whom seem to have their shit together. Whereas they’re pretty sure that they don’t. They desperately want to make a go of their little business but they can’t see what that’s going to look like for them. They keep looking around for inspiration from other, more established solo business owners but unlike maths homework, a marketing strategy isn’t something you can copy from someone else. WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF YOU COULD HELP THEM FIND OUT? The reasons that people will choose to use your client’s services, are completely different from the reasons they will choose to use someone else’s. Even if they both write copy or build websites, or charge less or charge more, or live around the world or right next door. The reason that people will choose to use your client’s services are likely to be ones that your client will be totally unaware of and the people who are most likely to find them irresistible, are ones your client works with already but probably considerers not important or sexy enough to be a proper target audience or the ideal client avatar that Amy Porterfield keeps telling them they need. The ideal client for them, could be the nuisance client that nobody else wants to work with, but for reasons they haven’t considered, is exactly who they’re meant to serve. IT'S ABOUT KNOWING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO ASK Figuring out how to stand out from the crowd to the people who will be attracted to you, who you like to work with and who it makes good business sense to work with, isn’t difficult if you know what questions to ask. Using this information to create a brand or the various elements of a brand, is a process that follows a different path to the process traditionally used to create a big business brand. BECOME SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS HOW TO CREATE FANTASTIC SOLO BUSINESS BRANDS If you’d like to be able to write copy or build websites or design logos or take photos for freelance or solo business clients, that will elicit comments like that feels exactly like me, only better, or I could never have imagined I could look like that, why not join our free online community for digital creatives that’s about everything to do with marketing for very small businesses and start learning with us. AND EVEN BETTER THAN A SET OF COMPLIMENTARY STEAK KNIVES ..... The bonus with this training is that the same thinking that you will learn about for your client work, can be applied to your own freelance business, to help you attract the types of clients who will see the value of working with you, and be happy to pay you for it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/472655286902693/
13.01.2022 Im someone who has to know how it ends. If this, then what. When Im faced with uncertainty, I model all the possible scenarios in my brain and once Im satisfied that I can imagine a contingency for each one, I can let my thoughts rest. Over the past 8 weeks Ive had a diabetic husband recovering from major ankle surgery, two kids needing to be home schooled, horses needing to be fed with hay which we get from out of our region, a business to keep going and all the Corona-...specific requirements of daily life to contend with. That has meant a lot of modelling. One thing Ive gotten pretty good at over the years, is accepting that in times of crises, there will be a lot of clutter whirling around inside my head, and its okay for me to be happy with the best I can manage on that day, whatever that looks like. So if youre still navigating your way through all the head clutter while running your business, I hope youre able to find peace in just doing the best you can each day, despite unfavourable conditions or uncertainty. As predictably as night follows day, certainty follows uncertainty. Just hang in until then and be gentle with yourself in the meantime.
13.01.2022 This week I discovered a little gem, an email marketing app called EmailOctopus. Its one of the few Ive found with a free plan which you sometimes need in certain circumstances for very low volume users, but Id happily pay for this service as its so well thought out and easy to use. For a long time, Mailchimp has been the default option for an email marketing starter option, but I wont be using it again now that I know that something of this quality is an option for my n...ew website clients when I set their sites up and link to an email marketing app to start collecting email addresses. A definite and enthusiastic five stars to the octopus!
12.01.2022 Dont underestimate the value of every step in reaching a goal.
11.01.2022 A brilliant episode from an amazing man. We need more of this in the world.
10.01.2022 Some interesting news from Facebook today.
10.01.2022 I launched a site recently for a London-based client Ive been working with, who are leadership coaches for execs of global brands. The brief was to clarify their messaging and improve the effectiveness of their website. There is something incredibly satisfying about watching a brand step out from behind a wall of mixed messages, and into a digital presence that supports their message and describes their target audience (what they do, and who they do it for).... The first iimage is the after, the second is the before. Check them out at https://truth-works.co.uk/.

08.01.2022 I recently launched a website redesign for one of the first clients I worked with when I started this business six years ago, a high-end hair and beauty salon in City Beach called The Salon which is owned by a very dear friend Michelle Williams. The version we have now, is actually the third iteration of The Salon's brand, which has evolved with their business over time. The brief for this project was to create something warm but elegant to match the gorgeous decor and person...al service of their City Beach salon. I was lucky to have beautiful images to work with, taken in a series of photoshoots by a talented local photographer. Quality images really make all the difference when you're building a website and in my opinion are well worth spending the money on. The first image is the new website home page above the fold, the second image is the full website home page and the third image is the previous website full home page. You can see The Salon's new website at https://www.the-salon.com.au/
08.01.2022 Are you thinking of using the skills you already have, to earn a living or supplement your income? Or have you been trading for a while, but need to get more bums on seats? Are you trying to create the content you need for a new website, but confused about what to say? Youre not alone. These things can be hard for everyone, no matter what type of business theyre in. A marketing coach can help you see the opportunities around you and suggest practical steps to take advantage... of them. In-person in Perth, online anywhere. https://www.sandytaylor.com.au/small-business-marketing-co/
08.01.2022 I love this quote! Not sure who said it but thank you Deon Newbronner, it really resonated with me. Edit: Turns out it was Winston Churchill.... Lou Collins
07.01.2022 We've had a few new websites go live over the past few weeks with some interesting stories that I thought I'd share. This one was for a local finance broker who'd had his current site for some years. The platform was no longer being supported which is what prompted him to look for help. The challenge with a lot of the website jobs that come my way, is that many have very little to work with as far as images go and this one was no different. The quality of a website is largely... dependent on the images, so this can be a problem. Small business owners in service businesses often have this issue and when you add to the mix, the fact that most people hate having their photo taken, it can make building a memorable website tricky. In Ron's case, we looked outside the square for a visual theme to give us something to work with. Ron is a mad keen Geelong Cats football fan, so we used this as a general theme for the site, even though his business has nothing to do with football. Because of licencing constraints we couldn't use any images featuring the Cats themselves, but a stock image of the MCG was able to be modified to work as a banner image. The first image is the home page above the fold, the second a full page view of the home page and the third one is Ron's old site. You can see Ron Cole Finance Broker's new live site at http://roncole.com.au/
05.01.2022 After some wild weather in Perth last night, Pete has said no thank you to Monday morning.
04.01.2022 more stock image gold.
04.01.2022 This made me laugh. Well said Al!
01.01.2022 I think this applies to business too. Its never too late to start and you dont have to do it the same as everyone else.
