22.01.2022 Last week in my classes I shared the following words from the Vietnamese Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh in his book The Art of Living: All the things we think we’ve got to find on the outside are already there inside us. Loving-kindness, understanding and compassion are there within us. We need only to clear some of the rock obstructing the way in order to find them.... There is no essence of holiness we need to seek outside. And there is no essence of the ordinary that we have to destroy. We are already what we want to become. Even in our most difficult moments, everything that is good, true, and beautiful is already there, within us and around us. We just have to live in such a way that allows it to be revealed.

22.01.2022 This week I was motivated to share Judith Lasater's words about the difference between feeling special and feeling important that she wrote in her book Living Your Yoga. I shared these words after hearing Trump tell his supporters who stormed the Capitol Building that they were "very special". He and his supporters clearly and sadly perceive themselves as separate beings rather than understanding that they are profoundly interconnected with everything around them.. "....it is... useful to know the difference between being special and being important. On the one hand, when we have the need to feel special, we want rules to change for us. We want to be first in line; we want to be the one for whom exceptions are made; and we want to be the one who doesn't die. This is a false sense of importance. On the other hand, each of us has a vital place in the scheme of things. Each of us has a dharma: a purpose, something to contribute to life, Perhaps happiness is the state that we feel when we find what it is that we can contribute with joy to the world. When we embrace our importance, we are living our connection with others and the world around us. In this state, we can change the world. Just a kind gesture or a generous word can change another's day. Stopping to pay attention to what another person may need right now in her life and helping when appropriate can change that person's life. Connection is the process of knowing our importance to the Whole, as well as comprehending that others share this importance with us. When we do so, we are less likely to hate or fear, secure in the knowledge that we are all eternal threads in the grand design."

18.01.2022 As we found ourselves in lockdown again in Perth this week I was drawn to share the words below on Acceptance from The Book of Joy. As the Dalai Lama says, so much stress and anxiety comes from railing against life not being as we think it should be. Particularly in this time of Covid19, cultivating an attitude of acceptance can facilitate a much happier state of mind. "Acceptance - whether we believe in God or not - allows us to move into the fullness of joy. It allows us to... engage with life on its own terms rather than rail against the fact that life is not as we would wish. It allows us not to struggle against the day to day current. The Dalai Lama had told us that stress and anxiety come from our expectations of how life should be. When we are able to accept that life is how it is, not as we think it should be, we are able to ease the ride, to go from that bumpy axle (dukkha), with all its suffering, stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction, to the smooth axle (sukha), with its greater ease, comfort and happiness. So many of the causes of suffering come from our reacting to the people, places, things, and circumstances in our lives, rather than accepting them. When we react, we stay locked in judgement and criticism, anxiety and despair, even denial and addiction. It is impossible to experience joy when we are stuck this way."

18.01.2022 A recent life event has reinforced the need for me to truly rest for my physical and mental wellbeing. I've again returned to James Reeves & Gabrielle Brown's book, The Book of Rest - Stop Striving, Start Being. I don't think I have to read this to my beautiful girl Ruby who mastered the art of true resting long ago "On the surface of things, the subject of rest might appear to be about taking a nap or getting more sleep or perhaps even kicking back with a glass of wine, b...ut while these are some of our most favourite things to do and can benefit us in many ways, they can also distract us from the true experience of rest. Being able to recognise and allow true rest is vital to us feeling whole, authentic and balanced. When we stop, we are able to experience the stillness that exists between and beyond our thoughts and self-narrative. Very often, we catch only a glimpse of this stillness, but this is all we need to see to know that it is there. Rest, and being restful, is something that is always there within you, rather than something you must weave into your experience.

11.01.2022 Last week in my classes I shared Jeff Fosters words on the beauty of consciously embracing each moment as it arrives: You only ever have to deal with life a moment at a time. Please do not forget this. "You can't go back to the way things were. You can't un-see what you have seen. But you can be present, right now. And you can take each step consciously now, not automatically, habitually, but mindfully, with care. Finding gratitude for each extra moment you are alive. Thankin...g the air, the rain, the vastness of the sky. Thanking the feet and the legs and the spine as they keep you standing. Thanking the arms for all they hold and carry. Thanking the heart for what it endures, day by day. Thanking the shoulders, the brain, the lungs, the muscles, all the internal organs, full of unspeakable mysteries." ~ Jeff Foster, The Joy of True Meditation See more

10.01.2022 When I was browsing a book shop earlier this week I was struck by the number of books in the "Self Help" aisle and remembered these words from Jeff Foster in his book The Joy of True Meditation which I shared in my classes this week: "There is no self to help. The best self-help advice of all. When you try to 'help' the 'self' you reinforce an illusion: That there is a broken self today, an incomplete self that is 'less than' a future self.... You forget your nature as Presence itself. When you give up trying to help a self, you sink into an unconditional embrace: The embrace that is Life Itself. Where all your imperfections, your doubts, sorrows, joys and fears, your longings and your ecstasies, even your imagination of 'self', and your frustrated attempts to 'fix' it, or 'help' it reach a future, are 100% embraced. Already. No self to save. No self to fix. No self to enlighten. No self to lose. No self to transcend. Just an exquisite moment. An unlimited divine perfection, shimmering through this human imperfection. So help yourself, friend, by ending the exhausting search for a better self.....and simply relaxing into this unique Now." "

09.01.2022 Last week in my classes I shared some words from the Dalai Lama on perspective, the first pillar of joy according to him and Archbishop Desmond Tutu as outlined in The Book of Joy: For every event in life," the Dalai Lama said, " there are many different angles. When you look at the same event from a wider perspective, your sense of worry and anxiety reduces, and you have greater joy." The Dalai Lama had discussed the importance of a wider perspective when he was telling us a...bout how he was able to see the calamity of his losing his country as an opportunity. It was jaw-dropping to hear him "reframe more positively" the last half century of exile. He had been able to see not only what he had lost but also what he had gained: wider contact and new relationships, less formality and more freedom to discover the world and learn freedom others. He had concluded, "So therefore, if you look from one angle, you feel, Oh, how bad, how sad. But if you look from another angle at that same tragedy, that same event, you see that it gives me new opportunities." See more

08.01.2022 Being the beginning of a new year, in my classes last week I shared the last two verses of John O'Donohue's A New Year Blessing May the nourishment of the earth be yours, May the clarity of light be yours, May the fluency of the ocean be yours,... May the protection of the ancestors be yours. And so may a slow Wind work these words Of love around you, An invisible cloak To mind your life.

08.01.2022 In tribute to our beautiful girl Dax who we sad goodbye to last week, I have shared the lesson on Love from Pawprints of Wisdom in my classes this week: Love is much more than a warm feeling. It's unconditional, positive regard. Giving and receiving love is a basic need....for all of us. It can be family love, love of friends, or love of our dear pets. Dogs love us no matter how absent minded, uptight, busy, messy, cranky, late or tired we might be. Their love for us never fa...des. From their unconditional love, we can learn to have more unconditional love for ourselves. It's not always easy. Sometimes we have the erroneous notion that we must strive toward perfection to be more lovable. Our fur babies know we love them just the way they are. We can only love others to the degree that we love ourselves. Loving the self is not pride, arrogance, vanity, or self-centredness. Love includes having great respect for ourselves - imperfections and all! Love is not jealous or resentful. Love is feeling thankful that those you love are enjoying the moment. Our dogs can increase our capacity to love, and for that we can be eternally grateful. Carol Grace Anderson.

07.01.2022 Over the last week I have shared the following words in my classes from Tara Brach from her book Radical Acceptance. For me they reinforce that the greatest gift we can give ourselves is learning how to get out of our heads and mindfully inhabit our bodies whether we are on or off the yoga mat: We experience our lives through our bodies whether we are aware of it or not. Yet we are usually so mesmerised by our ideas about the world that we miss out on much of our direct sens...ory experience. Even when we are aware of feeling a strong breeze, the sound of rain on the roof, a fragrance in the air, we rarely remain with the experience long enough to inhabit it fully. In most moments we have an overlay of dialogue that comments on what is happening and plans what we might do next. We might greet a friend with a hug, but our moments of physical contact become blurred by our computations about how long to embrace or what we’re going to say when we’re done. We rush through the hug, not fully present. Wishing everyone a very happy and peaceful time over the festive period and a positive and bright start to 2021

06.01.2022 This week in my classes I shared some more words from Jeff Foster in his book The Joy of True Meditation. These words are from his reflections on Walking with Joy. And of course I have to accompany these words with my favourite walking with joy moments - with my husband and dogs in Augusta "Sometimes you become so mesmerised by the goal, the destination, the future, the 'place you should be', that you forget the present ground, the place where you stand, the place from whi...ch you will take the next step, the place where life always is. You forget that you are breathing now, that the journey is made only of breaths, fleeting instants, moments that cannot be repeated. You forget your own presence, so solid, so trustworthy, so constant amidst the constant change of the journey. The destination has become more important than presence, and you have become lost in time. Joy is not a place you reach. Joy will not appear magically on the completion of your journey. Joy lives only in presence. Joy has a home called Now. Joy is there in the sense of being alive, the belly rising and falling, the pounding of the heart, the surprising sounds of the afternoon. Joy is there in every step taken or not taken. Whether you are lost, or far from your destination, or unsure about your next step, joy is there, walking with you, breathing down your neck, willing you on."

05.01.2022 In my classes last week I shared Jessica O'Brien's words on valuing the little things in life....so true as they are the substance of our lives. Someone once told me to always live for the little things in life.... Live for 5am sunrises and 5pm sunsets where you’ll see colours in the sky that don’t usually belong. Live for road trips and bike rides with music in your ears and the wind in your hair. Live for days when you’re surrounded by your favourite people who make you realise that the world is not a cold, harsh place. Live for the little things because they will make you realise that this is what life is about, this is what it means to be alive.

05.01.2022 I'm thinking of renaming my on-line iRest class iRest Meditation for Dogs. I usually have Dax joining me and in recent weeks Maple has also joined in, and then this morning our visiting Vizsla Vespa decided to try it out. Thank goodness Ruby couldn't be bothered getting off our bed to do the class. They are all natural meditators, lying quietly beside me, though I think sometimes Dax loses concentration as I can hear her snoring
