22.01.2022 [ PRIMARY STEM DAY ] Oh No! We are lost! Santa Sophia has just built us a new school at Box Hill and we need to show the students and parents how to get around the school! This is the problem given to Primary students today for our STEM Day. Together, they had to come up with the solution - to make a map for each floor of the Santa Sophia school using real blueprints and building plans. Using sphero and blue-bot robots, they created code around the map, giving them directions of where to go.
22.01.2022 Although we couldnt celebrate our Colleges Feast Day as lively as we had wished we could (due to COVID-19 safety measures), we were still able to make the day special by reflecting on the Santa Sophia story and part of our College motto - Wisdom through Faith, Hope and Love. In Secondary, we concluded our day with activities about the three values - including a game that required a bit of faith! Teams had to quickly pull each paper separating a plastic cup and have all five stacked cups fall inside one another. We were also blessed to have Father Carlos Walker from Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church - Rouse Hill join us for the afternoon!

10.01.2022 In these last few weeks of term, we are running small competitions of different sports. First up - soccer (or football, depending where you're from ). Students registered as part of a 5 a side team and went into a knockout competition progressing through several rounds to where we ended up with Year 9 v Year 7 for the grand final. The Year 7 team won the grand final at recess 1-0 and went on as the School Champions to play the staff team where the staff came away victorious 1-0.
10.01.2022 We recently had a PBS4L challenge in the secondary school to see which classroom could be kept the tidiest over a 3 week period. The winning class group was Year 7 Navy! They earned a pizza party on Thursday 10th September and to keep with COVID-19 restrictions where food sharing is not allowed, each student was able to order their very own box of pizza! Some students were very happy about that!
10.01.2022 Although we couldn't celebrate our College's Feast Day as lively as we had wished we could (due to COVID-19 safety measures), we were still able to make the day special by reflecting on the Santa Sophia story and part of our College motto - Wisdom through Faith, Hope and Love. 10.01.2022 Stage 4 and 5 students continued their formation program facilitated by presenters from Valour and Allure. In Term 1, they explored what it means to be a man and a woman in a world with increasing pressures on teenagers and their self worth. Today, students continued the conversation, exploring what it means to be a good friend (building good character and virtue), and using social media to be a positive influence. One of the activities they were challenged with was to come u...p with an advertisement for a product that promotes positive friendships. Some slogans they came up with included: "Good coffee is like a good friends - it warms you up" "A hair brush doesn't judge, it just cares!" "Unlock the key qualities of a beautiful friendship" (keychains)
10.01.2022 Primary students had a great lesson on why friendships are important and what to do when a friend isn't OK. Some suggestions included "invite them to play with us" and "comfort and support them". Exploring the theme "There's more to say after 'Are you okay?'", one student gave great advice when they suggested "If they say no when you ask them if they want to play, you can tell them 'It's OK, I can still sit with you if you want'" It was a special day to remember!... 07.01.2022 Today we celebrate the Feast day of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although we normally celebrate the death-day of Saint's the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an exquisite exception since her soul was the space from which God was able to gain access into humanity (Pope Benedict XVI). Secondary students today were given the opportunity to pray the Rosary during lunchtime today. We encourage you to let your children know about this special Feast today and perhaps celebrate it together by giving them a special dessert or "blue" treat after praying the Rosary or a Hail Mary together this evening.

06.01.2022 Could YOU stand in front of your teachers arguing why they should be replaced by computers? This was the task of the Affirmative side in the debate last week for their first adjudicated debate. Both sides of the argument presented well-researched points, some of them including... Affirmative: "Why wait for a tutor when computers are the future?"... 1. Accessibility and accuracy: Computers are more accessible and are a more accurate form of learning, having algorithms which allow for the information to be personalised to learning needs. 2. Impact on mental health: Computers are strong and reliable platforms, allowing students to work at their own pace, allowing for less pressure on students, which will increase the quality of their work and positively impact their mental health. Negative: "Teachers are a MUST, computers are a bust!" 1. Social aspect: The bond between teachers and students helps them to socialise in the real world - eliminating this would disrupt students learning to socialise and make it harder for them to understand social cues, and vice versa, computers cant pick up social cues such as student anxiety and are unable to make the necessary adjustments to help the student cope. 2. Student engagement: students require practical application in learning and computers decrease the interactive nature of the class. Debating engages students in intense teamwork and collaboration, to improve their critical thinking, researching skills, information retention, structured thought, focused listening and note-taking, civil discourse, as well as public speaking skills.
06.01.2022 The one symbol most often identified with Jesus and his Church is the cross. Today, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrates the cross as a sign of Christs victory over sin and death for us. It is also called the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, because the cross is not a sign of defeat, but a sign of redemption, a sign of victory, the sign of God, who is love itself. 'For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in h...im might not perish but might have eternal life.' - John 3:16 Photo Source: Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church - Rouse Hill

04.01.2022 Today is the Feast of Santa Sophia. In Primary, we celebrated by starting the day with a classroom liturgy with our teachers and Principal Mark De Vries. Saint Sophia is a first century saint whose name means 'Holy Wisdom', one of the values of our school. She had three daughters named Faith, Hope and Charity (pictured), which are the remaining three values our school abides by. We concluded our time of prayer by asking for the intercession of our patron Saint:... Saint Sophia, we ask that you watch over us as children of God. Pray that we may show faith, hope and love each day. Amen.
