24.01.2022 Yesterday I made the most delicious biscuits. As soon as they came out the oven, I knew I had to share. I have to firstly credit Sol Ghee Byron Bay for this delicious recipe! They are gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free (sweetened with only honey and orange juice). The best thing? They include my all time favourite spice, cardamom! Cardamom is quite high in antioxidants and has been shown in studies to reduce blood pressure, fight inflammation and improve digest...ion. It is an important spice in Ayurveda (the 5000 year old medicine of India) because it is tri-doshic, meaning it’s beneficial for all constitutions. Ancient Egyptians used to chew cardamom to whiten their teeth and freshen their breath. It’s also a common addition to Turkish coffee, most likely for the taste but it also because it helps take the edge off the caffeine. Enough about my favourite spice Onto the bikkies! The base is blanched almond flour (which I highly recommend you get from Almondco Australia Ltd ) and coconut flour. Orange juice and honey are the sweeteners, along with the zest. Oranges are in season and so good right now! It’s held together with ghee, Sol Organics Ghee of course. I’ve just bought 5kg of the stuff because I love it so much. Then you have the baking soda and salt. Check out the Sol Organics website for the full recipe. See more

18.01.2022 The Whole Brain Child by Daniel Siegal and Tina Payne Bryson is such a great book for understanding how our children's brains work. This is so important when navigating tantrums, meltdowns challenging behaviours. I do recommend getting a copy of the whole book. The best price I have found is through Fishpond via this link: https://bit.ly/3jhtMQY Meanwhile, here is a little summary to give you an idea.... (Unfortunately, I don't know who to credit this great diagram to )

18.01.2022 We could NOT let World Chocolate Day go by without at least acknowledging it's existence. But seeing as we're here, talking about this amazing, delicious, happiness-giving substance, we'd like to know... What is your FAVOURITE chocolate? And to make this slightly educational, did you know that if you're craving chocolate you may actually be magnesium deficient? So while you tuck into a block (or two) of chocolate to celebrate the day, check out this blog about all things magnesium https://bit.ly/3qT2kej
16.01.2022 In Winter it is often hard to drink water. Many people look towards warm drinks like coffee and tea and don't tend to get thirsty. But even when it's cold, it's still important to drink the recommended amount, which is 30mL per kilo of body weight. Eg. 1.8L for a 60kg person or 2.7L for a 90kg person. Many moons ago, sparked by an interview I did on the ABC, I wrote a blog post explaining all about the importance of water, the kind of water you drink and tips for increasing y...our intake https://bit.ly/3vSYKl5 Why am I re-sharing this? In this post I also explain about my favourite water filter; the one I use at home and in the clinic for the patients to drink. At the moment, there is a SALE on these filtration systems. You also get a FREE replacement filter cartridge ($49.95) and a FREE packet of alkalinity enhancers ($39.95). If you'd like to know more, just send me a message or click the link in the blog post.

13.01.2022 This is me back in 2008 on a volunteer trip in Thailand. As a group of three representing our uni, we volunteered in Thailand and Cambodia for an organisation called Destiny Rescue. Since that time, Destiny Rescue have narrowed their mission "to rescue kids from sexual exploitation, human trafficking and to help them stay free." From their website: "Since 2011, we have rescued more than 5200 people enslaved around the world, helped keep hundreds more from entering the sex tr...ade through our various prevention programs, ensured justice for those who have been wronged, and raised awareness to an untold number of people." I've also attached an infographic demonstrating a raid from February this year, where they rescued 31 girls in one night. To continue their mission, they need support. It's dangerous work. They use undercover agents to pose as potential customers, backed up with police and social workers, ready to swoop. It can take months of gathering intelligence and coordinating the rescue missions. You can make a one time donation, a monthly donation as a "Rescue Partner" to support one child rescue a month, or "Rescue a child", where your donation will fund the rescue of a child out of the sex trade for a one-time donation of $1500. This is the average cost it takes to free a child from sexual slavery or exploitation. Here are the links: One time donation: https://www.destinyrescue.org.au//don/one-time-donations/ Rescue Partner: https://www.destinyrescue.org.au//dona/regular-donations/ Rescue a Child: https://www.destinyrescue.org.au/support-us/rescue-a-child/ I know there are many charities out there but this is one I can vouch for and would love to see many of our Santosha page followers make a donation.

12.01.2022 Proprioception This is the primary source of stimulation to the brain. It is constant input, telling us where we are in space, how fast we’re moving, which muscles are moving, and which are not. The most important time in our life for proprioception is during infancy This is when it helps us to develop neurons and their connections in the brain If a baby doesn’t have adequate movement patterns while inutero (in the womb) and after birth, then the brain is ...Continue reading
11.01.2022 Summer solstice is the day that marks the longest day of the year and the shortest night of the year. At this time the peak of the light is celebrated, as well as the return of the dark cycle as the nights begin to get longer. Solstice: ‘sol’- means sun and ‘sistere’ to take a stand or stand still. So it is literally the sun standing still. Summer Solstice is also known as the festival of Litha. The is the peak of energy; life is flourishing, flowering and full of vitalit...y. In terms of cycles, Summer Solstice is the equivalent to ovulation in the menstrual cycle. A time of life potential, manifestation and expression. The year is a little different than other years. Most people would have heard that tonight the planets are literally aligning. Well two of them are. Saturn and Jupiter will be the closest they have been in nearly 400 years. Their light will combine to create what has been referred to as the Christmas Star. Look to the Western horizon after sunset, which tonight will be around 8:20pm. And if that wasn’t enough energy for you, just after 9pm tonight an event that has been prophesied by elders of many cultures around the world will be taking place. I don’t have the knowledge or the insight to give a full explanation, but if this is something that calls you, I do encourage you to look deeper. My only suggestions are that maybe at 9pm you could ground yourself, meditate and connect. You can have candles, crystals, oils, music, whatever you feel necessary. Here is just one link to learn more: https://bit.ly/3h7urS7

11.01.2022 The first biological task of the baby is to adapt to whatever environment into which he was born. To succeed in this task he or she literally absorb EVERYTHING in their environment. They do not question anything.
08.01.2022 How very apt. Yesterday was World Toilet Day I hope you celebrated! While the shelves of South Australian supermarkets have been wiped clean of toilet paper, there are 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation. World Toilet Day celebrates toilets and raises awareness of these issues. The theme of World Toilet Day 2020 is sustainable sanitation and climate change. A well-functioning toilet is connected to a sanitation system that takes away an...d deals with human waste. These systems need to work 24 hours a day, every day, to keep us and our living environments safe and clean. How can you help #WorldToiletDay and ensure people around the world have access to sanitation? Well, what if I told you that you could do exactly that AND avoid missing out at your local supermarket? By using this link https://www.talkable.com/x/qg9njA you can get $10 off your first order of toilet paper through Who Gives A Crap, who will then donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets and provide proper sanitation for people in need. Sustainable sanitation is resilient to climate change and safely processes bodily waste. Toilets, combined with clean water and good hygiene, form a strong defence against #COVID19 and future disease outbreaks. @un_water #toiletpaper #sanitation #healthyliving @whogivesacraptp #charity #toiletpaperapocalypse
08.01.2022 Let's talk smacking research. A brand-spanking new study (see what I did there?) published in the last 3 days in the prestigious journal, The Lancet, has invest...igated the smacking/spanking issue (again). It's based on 69 prospective, longitudinal studies - so it's high quality research. (Not just cross-sectional, which can't give us the same quality data.) Results? I quote from the abstract (which is all you can access without payment): First, physical punishment consistently predicts increases in child behaviour problems over time. Second, physical punishment is not associated with positive outcomes over time. Third, physical punishment increases the risk of involvement with child protective services. Fourth, the only evidence of children eliciting physical punishment is for externalising behaviour. Fifth, physical punishment predicts worsening behaviour over time in quasi-experimental studies. Sixth, associations between physical punishment and detrimental child outcomes are robust across child and parent characteristics. Finally, there is some evidence of a doseresponse relationship. The consistency of these findings indicates that physical punishment is harmful to children and that policy remedies are warranted. Why am I posting this? 62 countries around the world have banned smacking. But in Australia it's legal to hit your kids in every single state. I've written extensively and regularly about why this needs to change previously. And I spend my life trying to guide parents towards better discipline solutions. I want to be clear about this - it's not helpful to hit kids. No shame. No guilt. Just a plea. The evidence doesn't support it. Morally we can't support it. 63% of children between the ages of 2 and 4 worldwide -- approximately 250 million children -- are regularly subjected to physical punishment by caregivers. But we can do better than that. Please... love your kids when they are most unlovable. Be the kind of parent you wish you'd had when you were struggling. Remember that they've got their L plates on. They're just learning how to do things right.

07.01.2022 The services available at Santosha are growing Introducing... ROMANY BOWEN - Myotherapist... Wondering what Myotherapy is? Read on to find out... Clinical Myotherapy aims to provide a wholistic diagnosis and treatment for a vast range of conditions from sporting injuries, overuse pain to workplace injuries and acute to persistent discomfort. We use a variety of manual therapy tools to assist in pain relief including dry needling, hands on soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilisation and exercise prescription/correction. Romany has past experience working for elite AFL, NBL and Australian Olympians, as well working under the nations best in pre and postnatal care. Her experience extends as far as the mine sites in WA to the cities of Melbourne and rural settings in Mildura. A little message from Romany... I have been a practitioner for nearly 14 years now, I am fiercely passionate about the industry I work in and I aim to provide a high standard of wholistic treatment, with the patient always front of mind. I want to empower people to become more proactive about their treatment approach and general welfare of their own bodies. I want to assist our young athletes to greatness and help them compete to their highest levels and reach their dreams. I don’t see why people that live in remote or rural communities should be limited by their location when we, as practitioners, can increase the level of our services and the care we offer. I love playing sports on the weekends, hanging out with family and friends, getting away for weekends and of course life is not complete without a cheeky Espresso Martini! Romany will be available Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at Santosha. Simply call her main clinic MyoSports on 03 5023 3553 or visit her website www.myosports.com.au to book online. Unfortunately due to current restrictions, Romany has also had to suspend all treatments. Fingers crossed we'll all be back late next week

06.01.2022 At this time of year we get many patients complaining of itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, rashes and also headaches including migraines. While you might be aware that the runny nose and sneezing is allergies and a histamine response, what you may not know is that headaches, migraines and even acid-reflux are all related to the sneezing and itchiness histamine response as well. For the itches and the sneezes, we often turn to anti-histamines without any thought to why the bod...y is reacting like it is. We forget our body's are actually working for us and not against us. We have biochemical reactions which work towards good health, if our body is given the right environment. For histamine, it depends on our level of enzymes that work to break down the histamines (our natural anti-histamines) or the amount our body is producing itself. Yes our body produces histamine, either directly from foods we consume, or by converting something called histadine, also present in certain foods. Some examples are: Fermented dairy products such as mature cheese and yoghurt Wine and beer and other alcohols Processed and cured meats (salami, deli meats, sausage) Nightshade vegetables (tomato, potato, eggplant, chilli, capsicum) and also spinach Fermented and pickled foods (sauerkraut, kombucha) Berries can trigger histamine release Citrus foods also release histamine Foods that release histamine: Bananas Chocolate Alcohol Milk Nuts and peanuts Papaya, Pineapple, Strawberries Tomatoes Shellfish Artificial preservatives and dyes Limiting these foods listed can make a significant difference to histamine reactions such as sneezing, itchy eyes or throat, headaches and migraines, skin rashes and reflux. Sticking with low histamine foods still leaves you with many options: Most vegetables (except those listed above) Fresh meat and fish Fruits (except those listed above) Legumes and GF grains Butter and ghee For more information, I suggest your check out the website Nourishing Hope --> https://bit.ly/3kTa7F8 Julie Matthews is a certified Nutrition Consultant and Educator, globally respected nutrition expert, published researcher, accomplished author, and inspirational educator
