25.01.2022 Term 3 starts Monday! This will be a 6 week block, with a couple of changes to the timetable. Bookings will open tomorrow. Existing students and subscribers, keep your eyes peeled for an email tomorrow morning.

25.01.2022 So my students who know me well know that I don’t do early morning yoga - neither teach nor practice. Yet it turns out that if said morning yoga is going to be on a beach where it’s guaranteed to be over 20 degrees, that I will get up for it. Who’dathunkit?

24.01.2022 Yoga nerd alert! If you are fascinated by anatomy like me, and have heard me talk about fascia but not sure what it is, I found this great article that explains what fascia is and why its important in easy to understand terms. Check it out! https://www.ekhartyoga.com/articles/anatomy/fascia-and-yoga

24.01.2022 You might know that poor sleep can affect your brain tissue, increase your blood pressure, and affect your immune system. But did you know that there is a link between insomnia and anxiety and depression? In fact, if you suffer insomnia, you are 10 times more likely to suffer anxiety and/or depression. [Roberts and Duong, 2014]. Some of the well-known tips for better sleep include turning off devices and dimming lights at least one hour before bed, maintaining a regular time ...for going to bed and waking up, avoid stimulants and even your main meal should be at least two hours before bed. In addition to these, here are my top tips for better sleep: Try Legs Up The Wall (Viparita Karani) or a supported Childs pose for 10-15 minutes just before bed. Listen to a guided meditation specifically designed to help you sleep Insight Timer is my go-to app. Dont read, watch or work on anything that you find mentally stimulating just before bed. When I do, I find that my mind is too excited to let me sleep. Personally, I dont drink any liquid past dinner time, which means I rarely wake up needing the bathroom. This works for me, it might not be right for everyone! What are your go-to strategies? Share below so that we can all benefit.

24.01.2022 I noticed in one of my classes recently that I had students who were in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. This is not unusual in my classes, because I really do believe that yoga is for every body. I will often have new students ring me and enquire: I am aged x, which class would be best suited to me? And I tell them that their age tells me nothing, I need to understand things like their mobility, fitness, whether they have done yoga before, and how active they are d...oing other things. Then I am better able to guide them on which class to start with. So if you have been thinking that you are too old to start yoga, think again. If you have any questions, get in touch.

24.01.2022 Ok, time for a bit of fun! Below are 5 fun facts about me. One of them is not true. You have to guess which one is not true. (Mum and Dad, you are not allowed to play ). I am a chocoholic: I eat chocolate daily.... I have been skydiving twice My natural hair colour is blonde I have a motor bike licence One leg is longer than the other Answer in the comments! Go!

24.01.2022 Yay for borders opening! I am loving seeing all of the family reunions on the news, now that internal borders are lifting around Australia. Back in January, I had my first Dad and Daughter holiday, which was an incredibly special time. Little did I realise I wouldn't be able to see him for the rest of the year due to border closures.... When the borders did close, I am grateful to have been able to bring my Mum down to Tassie to spend lockdown with me. This was also great quality time, but we had no idea that she would be plunged into Melbourne's very extreme lockdown 2.0 upon her return, and then end up having heart surgery just as restrictions were easing. So I am especially grateful that I was finally able to spend time with her in Melbourne last week. I get to see my brother this weekend, who I haven't seen since 2018, and hopefully my sister in the New Year. Who else has had a family reunion recently? See more

23.01.2022 Thanks to those who joined me tonight to celebrate the Winter Solstice with a nourishing Restorative Yoga practice. Just in time for International Day of Yoga tomorrow! We are on a term break for 2 weeks: see you all in July!

22.01.2022 I’m looking forward to the next yoga and baked goods session at Port Cygnet Cannery next Sunday. Join me for a gently flowing yoga session - no experience needed! Followed by coffee and baked goods from @_francas_kitchen_ Head to the @portcygnetcannery website to book.

22.01.2022 Just popping by to wish you a Happy New Year! So far in my holidays I have done almost no yoga, walked very few steps, and eaten way too much chocolate, but gee I have relished spending time with family and friends that I haven’t seen in months or years. In these last moments of 2020, I have been reflecting on the lessons this year has brought me, which I plan to take into 2021 with me:... Feel all of the feelings Let go of the shoulds Control is an illusion Focus on the present Remember what is important What lessons are you taking with you? I would love to hear. And may 2021 bring you as much joy as is written on my face. See more

22.01.2022 Bolsters have finally arrived! DM me if you want one!

21.01.2022 Calling all locals! As we near the end of Winter, step into the Yoga Shack for a 90 minute Yin workshop, held under the flickering of fairy lights and candles. We will dive inward to replenish and harmonise the vital energy flowing through our bodies. We will let go of deeply held tension through long held, passive yoga poses. And quieten our minds in the stillness and silence.... Join me on August 29 for a 90 minute Yin Yoga Workshop, followed by chai and hot chocolate. Suitable for beginners and regular practitioners of Yin Yoga. Follow the Book Now button to secure your place. See more

20.01.2022 The other day I was out walking, and I passed a woman whose scent instantly made me think of my maternal Nanna, Gladys. Yet today actually marks 6 years since her passing, just shy of her 97th birthday. The power of smell! This week each year, I particularly find myself thinking of my grandmothers. In two days time, it would have been my paternal grandmother Jos 95th birthday, but she passed away at 91. They were chalk and cheese, my Nannas. My maternal grandmother, who nev...er drank, smoked or swore, taught us that if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all. She was sweetness and light, with a smile that lit up her face. My paternal grandmother was a chain smoking, drinking, swearing, firecracker of a woman who did not suffer fools and wasnt afraid to tell people what she thought of them. In terms of language, she was the crudest woman I have ever met. She equally loved to make people laugh as much as she liked to shock them. Boy, was she a character. Its times like these that make you appreciate the importance of family. If you cant physically hug your loved ones today, send them a virtual hug: its almost as good as the real thing.

19.01.2022 Monday update. Why must Facebook choose the worst possible frame to feature?

18.01.2022 We had another fun session at Port Cygnet Cannery this morning. It was lovely to see many of you meet new people and make new connections. Thank you to Franca, Asher, Rachel and all the team at Port Cygnet Cannery.

17.01.2022 Thank you for joining me at tonight’s Fairy Light Yin class. Glad that you all braved the cold to toast marshmallows around the fire pit. Did anyone else eat so many that they don’t want dinner? Or was that just me

17.01.2022 With the borders open I finally get to visit my Mum and care for her after her heart surgery. Thank you to Tania and Bianca for covering some of my classes and to my students for being understanding about the need to switch others to Zoom. Not sorry I missed the gale force winds and snow that welcomed Summer in Tassie!

17.01.2022 I want to bust a myth: "Yoga is just stretching". When we take a functional approach to yoga, we recognise that there are three ways that we typically "stress" our tissues. (Yes, stress can be a good thing. Too little and we wither away, too much and well, everybody knows about the dangers of too much stress, but thats for another post). We stress our muscles, connective tissue and ultimately even affect our bones through:... Contraction - engagement or squeezing or "switching on" of the muscles Compression - squashing the tissues and joints such as when we are in a forward fold or pressing one limb to another Traction - stressing and lengthening muscles and connective tissue. This is what we think of as stretching. And if youve never done yoga before, its important to know that there are many different styles. Some will be fast, dynamic, strength building. Others will be slow, gentle and meditative. Its just a question of finding the right style and the right yoga for you. DM me if you would like to know more about the different styles I teach.

16.01.2022 With the year we have had so far, there are more people than ever doing it tough. R U OK day is a good reminder to check in with your loved ones. This year, the R U OK campaign is going further: "Theres more to say after R U OK?" Would you know what to say if someone answers "No, I am not ok?" Head to the R U OK website for some great information and resources.

16.01.2022 Sometimes I think we run the risk in yoga of demonising the sympathetic nervous system, which is associated with the stress response. Think: "fight or flight". Many of our tools in yoga emphasize the parasympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as the "rest and digest" or "tend and befriend" side. Its understandable, because our modern lives are in such constant states of stress. And thats before a global pandemic hits!... But dont discount the role of the sympathetic nervous system. When we are in this state, the stress hormones released give us more energy and improve the blood flow to our major muscle groups. Our immune and digestive systems shut down in order to preserve energy for defending ourselves. So there are definitely times in our lives when this is required and indeed helpful. The problem is when we are CONSTANTLY in this state. DM me if you want to know some simple breathing techniques that can stimulate either the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system, or find some balance between the two. . . . @ellalucyphoto @ Kettering, Tasmania See more

16.01.2022 Your input wanted! I am reviewing the timetable for Term 4 and wondering if you would like a daytime class in Kingston? If so, which days and times work best?

15.01.2022 And that’s a wrap! Now that my last few classes of 2020 are complete, I am off for a 3 week break. Classes resume Saturday, January 9, 2021. (Ah, how good does it feel to be writing 2021?)... Wishing everybody a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and New Year.

15.01.2022 Sorry everyone, but tomorrow’s 9am Vinyasa is cancelled. But don’t forget that this Sunday’s Yin class at 4pm is a bring your Mum for free class. Simply book yourself in and tell us in the comments section of the booking form that you will be bringing your Mum.

15.01.2022 Getting out in nature always has a soothing and at the same time uplifting effect on me. Ive recently been doing some study into Stress, Self-Care and Mindfulness through the University of Tasmania, and there were some key insights that Id love to share with you. Australian research suggests that half an hour in nature on a weekly basis can improve mental health.... Im sure youve felt this, without needing a research paper to tell you. But one thing I didnt know is that using technology whilst you are out in nature effectively undoes the positive effects. I regularly use my phone to take photos and videos when I am out in nature, but lately I have been waiting until I am back indoors before I share anything on social media. Which helps keep me present and in the moment. What about you? Does nature work as a stress buster for you? And are you present with your five senses or are you sharing on socials in real time? . . . 15.01.2022 One spot has become available at this Sunday’s Winter Solstice Restorative class. Head to the events tab or the website for more info or send me a DM.

14.01.2022 Anybody feeling stressed? . . Oh, I thought there might be a few. You might like to try this simple breathing technique:... Notice your natural breath in this moment, and see what length your inhale is. It might be a 4 or 5 count length. Start by making your inahle and exhale even; so if you are breathing in for 4, breath out for 4. Do a few rounds, and then add one count to the exhale, so for example, in for 4, out for 5. After a few more rounds, increase the exhale to 6. And eventually work your way up to your exhale being double the length of your inhale. If this is too long, then just practice with a shorter count. Whenever we emphasise and lengthen the exhale, it helps our nervous system to switch into the parasympathetic system, which is the rest and digest or tend and befriend side. (The opposite to the sympathetic nervous system which is associated with the stress response). Try it and let me know how you felt afterwards? If you have any questions, feel free to DM me or comment below. . . Ella Lucy Photo

14.01.2022 How are your weekend plans shaping up? Have you made time for yourself and booked into yoga? We have 3 options for you: Vinyasa on Saturday at 9am Gentle on Sunday at 4pm... Yin on Sunday at 5.15pm Book Now!

14.01.2022 Hi! I'm Danielle. I thought I should introduce myself again, as I haven't done that for a while. I spent most of my life in the 'burbs of Melbourne but now live in a small village outside of Hobart, Tasmania. From the good old quarter-acre block as a kid to an apartment without even a balcony to now being surrounded by acres of bush, wallabies and birds. In 2016 I traded a 20 year career in marketing and fundraising for life as a sole trader. Growing up, my Dad had his ...own business and I swore I would never do the same. But I see the appeal now: being your own boss has it's upsides! I was drawn to yoga about 20 years ago when I needed a way to quieten the never ending chatter in my mind. It's been a constant fixture in my life since then but I never dreamed that I would one day be sharing its gifts with my own students. So anyway, enough of the life story, here's a couple of fun facts about me: I grew up doing calisthenics, was a marching girl and spent years doing jazz ballet, but I am hopeless at catching or hitting a ball. I love the creative process of designing products or yoga retreats but am equally at home in a spreadsheet. I love all animals with fur or feathers but am afraid of snakes, spiders, sharks and crocodiles. I love chocolate and oranges but hate orange flavoured chocolate. I do The Age Quiz with my partner every day and my expert topics seem to be geography and linguistics but I am useless at sport, the solar system or history. Now it's your turn: give me some fun facts! @ellalucyphoto

13.01.2022 I was led to this quiz via the studies I am doing at the University of Tasmania (a short program called The Wellbeing Toolkit). Its a really fun and interactive quiz that tests how well you read emotions on other peoples faces. I will share my score if you share yours!

13.01.2022 What role does your shoulder joint play in your Wheel pose?

13.01.2022 EDIT: the print is not of Adventure Bay Beach but Jetty Beach on South Bruny. A sneak peek at Fairy Light Yin and the big reveal of my new wall print! A huge shout out to Deni Cupit not only for his amazing photography skills but for doing all the work to find a Hobart printer who could print it on the scale I wanted. AND he did all the liaison with the printer, picked up the print to ensure he was happy with the quality, and personally delivered it to me. ... Check him out peeps, Deni Cupit Photography. His work is breathtaking.

13.01.2022 Thank you so much to everyone who joined me last night for Fairy Light Yin. It was such an honour to host you all. And we were blessed with a mild night for toasting marshmallows around the fire pit! And if the magnificent print on the wall catches your eye, be sure to check out Blackmans Bay photographer Deni Cupit.

13.01.2022 Grief grips my throat; Making it hard to swallow. Constant tears swell my eyelids, Making it hard to keep my eyes open.... My heart attempts to harden itself Against the searing pain of loss. In this moment, the question arises: Is it worth it? Is it worth opening your heart to love? When the pain of loss feels unbearable? But then I am reminded That if I had not let you into my heart I would not have learned The depth of unconditional love. RIP Zebu 29/01/2012 - 08/05/2021 See more

13.01.2022 Why are Yin pose names different to other forms of yoga? Most of the Yin poses we practice have been named by Paul Grilley, who is credited for bringing this style of yoga to modern mainstream society. He deliberately gave the poses different names because in his early days of teaching this new approach to yoga, he kept getting told "Thats not how you do x pose". So to make life easier, he just gave them different names and said "Im not practising x pose, Im practisi...ng y." What I love about this, is that Paul chooses not to argue with people who dogmatically believe that their way is the right way. He will teach his methods to those who are genuinely interested in considering new information, but he doesnt waste his energy trying to "convert" someone who isnt open to a new way of looking at things. Which is something I think we can all learn from. Social media would be a lot less argumentative, dont you think? . . . . . . (You might know the poses in these photos as Half Pigeon, or in Sanskrit, Ardha Kapotasana, but in Yin, they are known as Up Swan - the 1st photo - and Sleeping Swan.) @ellalucyphoto See more

12.01.2022 Heres some baby goats to brighten your day. Cuteness overload!

12.01.2022 First time I have practiced outdoors in a while! The wind was wild! And I only noticed the rainbow after I looked at the video. I hope youve had a chance to move your body today.

11.01.2022 Do you remember life before smartphones? I was reminiscing recently about the days of travelling around the world before I even had a mobile phone, let alone a smart one. Whilst it's certainly convenient to always have access to communication, I do think there are downsides too.... I, like many, have spent much of 2020 glued to my phone, constantly refreshing the news feed for the latest on the pandemic and now the US election. And I'm finding it exhausting. So my tip is to create some boundaries around this 'always-on" state in which are living. Get outside, leave the phone at home. Or put it on flight mode for a while so you aren't constantly distracted by notifications. What are your strategies for maintaining a healthy relationship with your smart phone? Comment so we can all learn some new tips. @ellalucyphoto

11.01.2022 About to set some New Year goals? This article gave me food for thought. Having a business background, I’ve always been a SMART goals girl. But perhaps open goals are the way to go?

11.01.2022 For those who didnt believe that my natural hair colour is (was?) blonde... Here I am at about 13 and 20. Anyone else rocking a perm in the 80s?

11.01.2022 Just a quick announcement about the booking system. There’s a glitch preventing any classes after this Saturday from being visible on the timetable. Hopefully it’s fixed soon! You can still book for the remaining classes this week though. One place left for yin tonight.

10.01.2022 Facebook memories tell me that 2 years ago today, I went over to Bruny Island to inspect possible retreat venues. And this morning I am checking out of one of the very venues that I visited, after hosting my 4th retreat on the island. Dreams can come true!

10.01.2022 2021 Retreats are now live on the website and are already filling fast. Get in touch if you don’t want to miss out. Oh and Jetstar are having a Black Friday sale that is also selling fast! (Hint hint Melbourne friends).

09.01.2022 In a normal year, it's usually about this time (less than 6 weeks before Christmas) where the fatigue of a long year is starting to kick in. And this is far from a normal year. It can feel like we are just hanging on by the skin of our teeth, limping along until we can finally take a rest. So why do we make it worse by putting pressure on ourselves to get things "done by Christmas"? Things we have put off all year suddenly become imperative to complete by this arbitrary... date. And who else can relate to letting good habits get sidelined during the festive season, only to end up making doomed New Year's Resolutions for a "new me"? So here are my tips to avoid collapsing in a heap at the end of year, and instead finishing well: Challenge whether it REALLY matters if you complete that task or see that person before Christmas. Could it wait another few weeks? Find ways to reduce the pressure that always seem to go with the lead up to Christmas. This might mean getting clear on your boundaries, understanding how much energy you have in the tank, and learning to say no. Maintain the things that keep you healthy and sane - like yoga, meditation, or exercise - right up until the end of the year. Make them a priority regardless of how busy life gets. Continue any good habit you already have in regards to sleep routines, healthy diet and drinking plenty of water, to balance out the festive food and drinking season we are entering. I'd love to hear any other tips you have. Share in the comments below! And as a PS, my thoughts are with all South Australians right now. I have all of my fingers and toes crossed that this outbreak is contained and you get to have the "COVID normal Christmas" you were heading for. @ellalucyphoto See more

08.01.2022 The website is now open for casual bookings. Classes resume tomorrow. Please note however that TUESDAY GENTLE 6PM is fully booked for the term, so casual places will only be available if someone who is booked in for the term can't make it. Best bet is to check the website on Tuesday afternoons.

08.01.2022 East Coast Retreat Tasmanians: it looks like we will be enjoying our beautiful State for a little longer. There is one place left on our East Coast Retreat being held on October 23-25.... This retreat is for you if any or all of the following resonates: You have found yourself enjoying the escape from "busyness" and want to ensure that you continue to incorporate rest, relaxation and self care into your routine. You have felt disconnected through social distancing and isolation, and want the opportunity to connect with like minded others. You have been making some decisions about how you want to live your life in alignment with your values and priorities, and need some clear head space to crystallise those ideas and plans. Or, you are simply busting to get away on a mini-break and Tasmania seems like the safest place to do it right now! Head to the website for more info. Link in comments.

08.01.2022 Language warning!

08.01.2022 Seeking your feedback! My little videos seem well received so I am throwing it open to you to tell me what you want to see next? Do you want sequences? Specific pose tutorials? Recommended poses for problem areas? More on anatomy and our structural differences? Maybe you’ve got questions like How do I...? or Why can’t I...?... So, over to you. Hit me up in the comments or DMs. Music: Cuba Musician: ASHUTOSH

08.01.2022 What a year! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to each and every student who has attended a class, event, retreat or private lesson with me this year. Thank you for prioritising your health and well-being. For showing up for yourselves. For your willingness to grow. For overcoming tech fears to join Zoom classes. For continuing to support my small business. You all mean so much to me. I wish you a safe and healthy Christmas and New Year season and I look forward to se...eing you in 2021. PS Last classes this weekend are Saturday 9am Vinyasa and Sunday 9am at the Port Cygnet Cannery.

07.01.2022 Quick PSA: a friendly reminder that bookings are essential for classes as the booking system doubles as the contact tracing system.

07.01.2022 I spent more than 15 years as a yoga practitioner and then as a new teacher feeling that I wasnt good enough at yoga. Its an uncomfortable truth that modern depictions of yoga predominantly feature young, thin, naturally bendy people (mostly females, and usually white and good looking, too). In my observation, people with bodies that are well suited to yoga flexible and/or strong and with big ranges of movement will naturally gravitate to the practice. It comes easy t...o them to create the shapes and do the poses as they are shown on the magazine covers or in the media. But for those who lack the flexibility, strength or appropriately shaped bones, it can be incredibly damaging to your self-worth to hold these images up as the aspirational goal. It wasnt until I studied Functional Yoga with Master teacher Paul Grilley, and particularly looking at skeletal variation and range of movement differences, that I gained these life-changing insights: Some bodies will never achieve certain poses, no matter how hard you try or how long you practice. There is no such thing as a perfect pose. There is no one correct alignment for a pose. Every yoga pose will be bad for somebody. Studying this content changed my practice, my teaching, and my relationship with my body. I am so passionate about it, that I am holding a 10 Hour Training on Functional Yoga in November. If you would like to understand your own body better, or be better equipped as a teacher to cater for a large range of body types in your classes, check out the events tab for more information.

06.01.2022 Thinking of starting yoga classes at Santosha Yoga Australia, but don’t know which one to start with? Let me show you the key difference between Gentle and Vinyasa.

06.01.2022 Sending love to all Victorians today. Not the news anyone wanted to hear. But I am pleased that those living alone will be able to have a friend bubble. We already had an epidemic of loneliness before the pandemic.

06.01.2022 I’m a big fan of supporting small, local businesses and Christmas is a great time to get behind our favourite businesses in Tasmania, and particularly in Kingborough. Share your favourite small businesses and tell us about the products or services that would make great Christmas gifts. This could include gift vouchers for services such as local restaurants. Over to you gang!

05.01.2022 If youve never practised yoga before, you might assume that the benefits are all about the physical body: greater flexibility, improved strength, better joint mobility. And whilst these are indeed benefits, to me they are just the side effects. One of the most important benefits I have gained is being less "ruffled" by external factors.... For example, in class last Saturday we had internet outages (not good for those on Zoom!), people walking into the room in the middle of class (wrong location), and noise from next door. And I was able to maintain focus, keep teaching, and not get stressed or thrown off-course. Being able to find that place within us of calm, quiet stillness, and more importantly, to stay there when the world around us is crazy, is one of the greatest gifts yoga can give.

04.01.2022 Where does your mind go when you are not present? Do you tend to go forward into the future? Planning, anticipating, fantasizing, worrying? Or back into the past? Reliving, reminiscing, regretting, rewriting?... The next time you notice that your mind has wandered, observe where it went. See if there are patterns and habits. The more you become aware of these habits, the easier it is to come back to the present. Which is the only place where life should be lived. @ellalucyphoto See more

03.01.2022 I've been busy working on the 2021 calendar of events and retreats, which is possibly one of my all-time favourite things to do! Those who asked to be on the "first to know" list have already seen the first couple of retreats and the uptake has been incredible! Just a few more tweaks to make and details to iron out and the schedule will be released publicly very soon. Stay tuned!... I am also excited to announce that I will be offering a custom retreat service. I regularly get asked "are you running a retreat at x time of year?" or told that a group of friends want to do a retreat together but can't find the right retreat, in the right place, at the right time, or within the right budget. Well, now I will organise that for you! More details to come soon but if a private yoga retreat with your besties in beautiful Tasmania sounds like your idea of heaven, get in touch now! See more

02.01.2022 A perfect way to say goodbye Spring, welcome Summer. Looking forward to more yoga on the deck over the next few months.

01.01.2022 Merry Christmas everybody! Feeling very lucky to be spending Christmas with several members of my family, especially as I know that many others can’t do the same. Wishing you all health and happiness this festive season!

01.01.2022 Three weeks with no cats was just too long. Whilst we are not quite ready to adopt yet, yesterday I became a foster carer of a Mama cat (only 1 year old herself!) and her 3 kittens. Who wants to make a bet on how long it takes me to have a foster fail and adopt one or more of my foster kitties?

01.01.2022 For all of the Brene Brown fans out there... I particularly like number 10. Which is your favourite?

01.01.2022 Heelllooooo first day of Spring! After a particularly challenging Winter for us all, Spring brings hope. For it is the season of newness. I love watching the previously dormant trees spring back to life. The budding of a particular flower that only appears in September. The baby animals frolicking around the paddocks nearby.... Spring also brings the hope of better weather, longer days and more social activities. My heartfelt wish, on this first day of Spring, is that our friends and loved ones in Melbourne and Victoria will soon see an easing of restrictions and a return to the relative freedom that we are enjoying in other States.
